    A werewolf - according to legend, a person capable of
self-transformation, or simply turned into an animal. In many
countries there was a widespread belief that there were people
which can take the form of an animal. As a rule, it is believed
connects such people with the most dangerous animal in the region. B

In the Mediterranean, such an animal was the wolf.

    In Europe, there is a belief in lycanthropy, i.e.  in ability
transformation into an animal, a very long time ago.  Another Herodotus,
ancient Greek historian who lived in the 5th century BC
Christova, Neuri mentions, i.e. people who turned into
wolves for a few days every year. In 16th century France
such a belief was so strong that the French Parliament
passed a law on the extermination of werewolves.

    Belief in lycanthropy was strong evenin the 19th century. French
peasants in remote areas of the country were afraid to leave their homes
at night.  They believed that Loup-Garou could attack them
(French name for werewolf).  Peoples of northern Germany
believed that saying the word "wolf" in December provokes
attack on them by werewolves. The Danes believed that a werewolf could be
recognized by the shape of the eyebrows, and the ancient Greeks believed that seizures
epilepsy is lycanthropy...



    The werewolf is one of the central figures of ancient superstitions.
Along with vampires, witches, ghosts and ghouls, he
has existed for thousands of years, terrifying adults and children in
big cities and remote places.

    The word ~lycanthrope~ from which he gets his name is
literally means ~wolfman~ and comes from the Greek
Lykantropia.   Some dictionaries define this word as
~transformation of a witch into a wolf~. The wolfman theme was rich
residential, developed both in oral traditions and in chronicles almost
all over the world.  In France this monster was known as
lou-garou, in other parts of Europe as werewolf, or verman,
wolfhound, or wolfhound - in his favorite Transylvania,
Poltenik - in Bulgaria.

    Beginning with Romulus and Remus, stories of the wolf, the man-beast and
the werewolves themselves were possessed by people of such intelligence and talent as Jean Jacques
Russo, KarlLinnaeus and Jonathan Swift.  Talented writers
created a whole series of wonderful works about werewolves.
One can name the works of such authors as Frederick Marryat,
Rudyard Kipling and Guy Endor (creator of the Werewolf of Paris), and
Today James Blish and Peter Fleming are interested in this topic.



    However, the werewolf is not as well known as his brother -
villain vampire.  From the very beginning you need to remember that the werewolf
more meaningful and mysterious than a vampire. All attributed to him
mythical qualities can be debunked quite easily
modern science, but even in ancient times
there was a certain disease that affected entire villages,
turning people into raging beasts, and these patients had everything
classic symptoms of lycanthropy.  That's why there's little surprise
cause bloody orgies in Europe in the 16th century, when these
unfortunates suspected of demonism were persecuted and
poisoned by dogs, died in hundreds.



    So, we must introduce readers to the four main
aspects of the subject we are considering:



    firstly, a werewolf, a mythical creature, a human sorcerer,
able to transform into a wolf and seek out its victims during the day and
at night, which can be killed in certain ways, e.g.
silverbullet;

    secondly, the wolf itself is a cunning and intelligent animal, which
learned to deceive a person;

    thirdly, a person affected by a very rare hereditary
a disease, many of whose symptoms coincide with those of
lycanthropy;

    and finally, this is a phenomenon of natural history, a wild wolf child,
a human being who grew up among animals, having lost almost
all recognized human characteristics, including the gift of speech,
eating raw meat.



    All of the above images will determine the course of our
historical-zoological;) search, the subject of which is man -
half-beast that has attracted the attention of mankind throughout
thousands of years.



    The topic of werewolfism is just one of the areas of study
the unknown, which is being dealt with by foreigners, and today
domestic specialists and amateurs. Some of them united
in a society for studying the secrets and mysteries of the Earth, one of the goals
which is the publication of scientific and educational books about everything
mysterious and unsolved. These articles are about werewolves who
