DIRECTOR: Anthony Weller RATING: 7 (IMD b - 5, 9) FILM COMPANY: Hollywood Pictures YEAR OF RELEASE: 1997 PLOT: Three young Americans in search of adventure visit Paris. One of them saves a girl trying to commit suicide suicide. But this is not a melodrama, because the girl is a werewolf, according to at night becoming a wild animal. It's starting to get bloody a whirlwind where victims become predators, and predators become victims. Scary and fun at the same time. COMMENT: On the Russian video market there is now (in 1999) obvious saturation with vampire themes ("Blade", "Vampires"), and, to be honest, I didn't expect much from a film about werewolves. But, fortunately, my expectations were not met - the film turned out to be interesting, contrary to popular belief that The sequel is always more boring than the first part of the film. "American A Werewolf in Paris" is essentially a continuation of John's cult film Landis "An American Werewolf in London" (unfortunately, did not have pleasure to see). Warning about questionable quality Parisian atmosphere almost instantly dissipated - after the episode with The Eiffel Tower reminded nothing of the decadent race and their decadent culture (except for the stupid faces of the police and cars). The same can be said about the first episodes of the film - everything was easy and relaxed, and the joke with the condom is even more so cannot be classified as a French joke - Long Live America! So, I think that London, that Paris, that Lyubertsy - not important to the action of this film. And now there are werewolves on stage. And the very first mass episode reminds you of the best scene from Blade - the nothingness party unsuspecting people, turning into a bloody Sabbath. Ripped off outright, and who ripped off whom - you can guess by comparing the years release. True, werewolves were not as juicy as vampires from "Blade" and were more like werewolves from "Wolf" with Jack Nicholson - unpleasantly hairy and angular. Special werewolves weren't shocked by horror, although computer animators did a great job and some episodes of transformation from people to the werewolves looked quite spectacular. However, for those who this is very important, I will say that the special effects still looked outdated or at least not innovative. Not quite well seasonedhorror style - that's it classic horror with afterlife music and a character who a werewolf is about to tear apart, otherwise it’s suddenly a youth horror film with rave music and bloody action. Of course all this is noticeable if you look carefully, but if treats the film as a whole dish of unknown components, this dish is quite edible and is possible due to its heterogeneity practically never gets boring (once I did look at counter on the VCR). It is thanks to the youth of the actors that some fresh impression of the film, although about a very good acting The game doesn't need to be said - average work. The philosophy of werewolves also turned out to be undeveloped. There were attempts to justify the existence of werewolves with the idea of a purge humanity from the sick and weak. But the thought sounded uncertain and unreasoned, although borrowed from literary works in which this idea was worked out very thoroughly (again, I can’t remember either the title or the author). It’s somehow hard to talk about the merits of the film - they elusive, but undoubtedly there, maybe thanks unexpected plot twists and spontaneity of the narrative. On the other hand, this film isjust chewing gum - you'll forget about it there in a couple of days (hours/minutes)...
