AAAparty demoreview
by sq/skrju
There were 20 dem at this party. Twenty! The number is completely unprecedented - even on Fantope was half the size. However, you should not be seduced ahead of time - Still, quantity does not always translate into quality.
Twenty demos is a lot. Everyone deserves equal attention, and we don't have the right to deprive a review of any of them. But, of course, consider in detail Each one won't work. Some demos are such that even if they were The only ones on the compo, it would still not be possible to examine them in detail.
I’ll warn you right away - for anyone even more or less familiar with the demoscene some shortcomings in the demos below will be too obvious and axiomatic; I will try not to mention such shortcomings again, focusing on more important things.
It is also worth noting that there was an intrigue on this component, which, you see, in our time doesn't happen very often.
Well, let's start, as usual, from the bottom up.
20 place - Video Car by AER
19 place - Duragon by AER
18 place - MK Beeper by AER
16 place - Democode by AER
AER demos are traditionally considered all together. And traditionally we write the same thing. Converted graphics - and very frightening, criminal, crazy music, sometimes turning simply into sounds, from which I am in the most perfect delighted! Especially in Democode. I watched and re-listened to it more than anyone else the rest of the demos from this party. This is just something incredible. That's exactly it the sound we dreamed of creating in 2003, making Fuck you scene. And now I admit that AER has surpassed us. AER is the discovery of the year for me.
In addition, in terms of the number of last places in the demo compo, AER can only compete with that only with skrju.
AER, keep doing what you're doing! And don't listen to anyone.
17 place - ZX-Keeper by Shadowssoft
Deme from one effect - an attribute flame against the background of a picture with the devil, on whose horns the colors sparkle to the music. I don't know why, but I liked it. Somehow everything goes very well with the music, and the colors are chosen well, and in general ok!
15 place - Time of Night by Night Software
Dema is not in Russian or English, so I understood practically nothing words from what is said there. In such a situation it is very difficult to evaluate the deme, because Time of Night consists almost entirely of text. The start is done for a movie - very interesting and even quite stylish. But already in the next This style is completely lost on stage.
The demo also has some kind of attribute effect, but it’s not clear whether it works it is as intended. If yes, then that's very cool; attribute noise! If not - I'd like to see what it would have looked like in the original. And yes, too much old school music, just beyond old school, so much so that it can even be listen!
14 place - Z80 Megademo by Triumph
"ZX-Spectrum CHOKB computer for sale" (c)
How can I write a review of this demo? This is completely impossible. You need to understand that This demo is a time machine. It was not made by Triumph, the authors of the legendary Psychosis cult beccuL and colossal Miracle, organizers of Final Shoque, heaps disk cracks, intros, own games and much, much more. This demo made by teenage ninth-graders from the city of Chelyabinsk, for whom the Spectrum was more important than anything in the world. They talked about the Spectrum in class, walking on the street, walking visit each other. We discussed the news that he sent in a letter to five-inch floppy disk, the same Spectrum-sick ninth-grader from the other end Russia. We discussed how unattainably cool Vibrations and Illusion were made. We shared our successes in completing “48 Irons”. They argued about whether they would release Digital Reality promised by Paradise Lost and Megaball (after all, someone wrote somewhere that That's it - they're collecting orders!) We were waiting for the new issue of ZX-Format. Cherished every rumor about upcoming Enlight'97, without even dreaming of going there and seeing all those who were for them it is more important and authoritative than all the world's celebrities...
They made this demo. And this is what I want to tell them. Guys, there's still a lot to come a lot of interesting things. No, even so: the most interesting is yet to come!..
13 place - AAA-Party by Anonymous
A slideshow with a plot directed against the organizer of this demo party, with a funny music and pictures from the imageboard.
12 place - Znakostrochnik by Andrew Zhiglov
Dema - with a concept, about games. The start of the demo is excellent, with stars. Very cool although not framed. And then immediately, the next variation of this effect, with from the very beginning, the authors ruin the entire main idea of the demo, which is to show colored sprites in motion on a colored background. Everything is going well - and suddenly from the very beginning there was a clash when stars overlapped each other. It's right away spoils the whole impression. It would seem like a trifle, but it is from such trifles that the complete picture. However, this flashing is also repeated in Cybernoid and Xecutor, although all this could have been avoided by setting a little more competent trajectories. Although, of course, after flashing on the stars, this no longer matters.
The demo was somewhat reminiscent of demos from newart - Image Megademo and Reconstruction Chaos, according to the atmosphere, according to the idea somewhere, maybe. I hope this won't be the last author's deme.
11 place - Gift 4 Blade'17 by Triumph
The time machine from 1996 switches to 1998. Dema from the same guys from Chelyabinsk. From those - but not from those! A lot has happened in two years. you Do you remember how quickly time flew by then? They are no longer ninth graders - they preparing to graduate from school and enter adulthood. Already completed Enlight'97, SpectrumThe demoscene is at its peak, and all this is reflected in this demo. Gift to Sashka Rakitin, Blade, the same one from Triumph, congratulations on Happy 17th birthday!.. Something is clearly glimmering ahead, but it’s not quite clear yet, what. Once we finish school, what happens next? We don't know yet, and honestly In other words, we don’t really want to know. We have a Spectrum, a lot more so far unrealized ideas and plans, and the brilliant Antokha Shumakov. We'll do more a lot of interesting things!..
And you and I, in turn, will wait.
10 place - DotsElka by Destr
Demo, consisting of one effect with the music "Jingle Bells", covers of which on Spectrum alone, recorded on a five-inch floppy disk and stacked, cover the distance from Earth to Mercury three times. So, this demo got in indecently high. The effect is beautiful and fast: the tree rotates, the analyzer spreads away from it, the snowball pleasantly spins and falls. In general, who knows, maybe the deme is in the right place. But there is too little of it, I want something Also, and the screen is too empty. It happens that after a bad effect you don’t want to continuation of the demo. But this is still not the case.
9 place - Yolk'10 by Debris
Again a demo about the New Year and the Christmas tree. There are two Christmas trees this time. And they are completely they pull out the whole demo, which, of course, looks more like an intro or a gift than it does, in general, it is. Cheerful music, greetings and congratulations to all visitors forum zx.pk.ru - and funny painted Christmas trees. I think that tiboh is not at all I didn’t expect any place, and was completely satisfied with the result.
8 place - E-Demo SAA Music by Mick
From here on, things get much more serious. Megademo of three parts, one of which is an epilogue. As the author admits to us in credits for this epilogue, the ideas of the first and second parts (as, in general, the epilogue itself) are taken from Sam Coupe and PC respectively. Funny animation after the final scroller too converted. And everything would have been fine if it weren’t for the frankly unsuccessful music, which, By the way, it was also converted from somewhere. But all this, of course, has no meaning, because Mick himself told us about it, he's great. I don't know what else add. In general, such demos are very difficult to comment on - because everything is clear, and the author himself understands everything, and everyone understands everything. So, what's up here? you'll add more. And the second part, with the cat, is normal. As usual, we are waiting for the next onesdem.
7 place - Gift 4 All by GM BIT
Three minutes of the coolest scroller with snowflakes flying across the screen. And greetings to end. The scroller was made cool, but I didn't read the text. Seventh place overall.
6 place - Anal Funk for Silly Punk by TOGYAF
Gradually we get to the most interesting part.
It’s immediately clear that behind this demo hides hundreds of bile and hatred towards one popular forum and specifically to some of its visitors. This is their business, and ours They don’t concern you, ordinary people. You and I are interested in this topic exclusively from an aesthetic, demoscene point of view. You and I would like figure out what it is.
And it is a mixture of awesome, super cool graphics, drawn with awe and love, carefully and very high quality - and disgusting texts written, as it may seem, not initiated into the essence of the problem to the viewer concerned with teenagers with sexual deviations. After watching one gets the feeling that the demo was made by completely opposite people who They don’t even know each other and are on opposite sides of good and evil. However, all this is not as far from the truth as it might seem at first glance. I’ll just say, for those who don’t know them personally, that Wizard and Budder are the most modest, the most intelligent and very kind people, and Sand is a great guy, he’s on board, and good friend.
But - about the demo. Intra is made amazingly - stylish, dynamic, with very good graphics, and all this is perfectly synchronized with the music. Next comes horizontal scroller, in color, with some important information - and vertical, with completely stupid and mediocre verses. About the poems I will say Here's the thing: I absolutely don't care who doesn't love who or, on the contrary, loves who considers a fagot, and who he doesn’t consider, who fucks whom and who doesn’t fuck - me, Like any normal person, I absolutely don’t care about all this. But if in demo there is a text, I want to read it, and I want it to be of high quality, I want enjoy the text - no matter what it is written about. Let him be with swearing, about fagots and shit, let there be a drawn picture next to this text a man in shorts and jerking off - but please, write such poems so that they evoked emotions in me. I'm not even talking about those to whom they are addressed. I'm not at all I’m sure these people were at least a little upset or angry, after reading all this. These texts are completely harmless. If you really want to offend person - offend him. Do this, find the sore callus, press on it. Play to his weak points. And all these texts about dicks, fagots and shit - they don't work. Because this is childhood and a whim.
And after all this there follows a completely crazy scene. In it the dick is chasing a man against the backdrop of a very cool and detailed city. I won't get tired repeat how great the graphics are here. Even her bad text is not at all ruined it. And in this part he is also helplessly bad.
The part with toilets, from which cartoon characters pop out to the music, with the point of view of satire is the most successful in the whole deme. Perfectly reworked motto in at the very top, the overall picture as a whole, and finally, the text. This is what I'm talking about spoke. But all it took was a little wit - and it turned out very funny scroller. Well, then comes the epilogue, in which the member tries for the second time catch up with the cartoon character, and Pac-Man runs after them both and tries to calm down
This is our sixth place.
5 place - Black-White Demo by VNN
VNN, Nikolai Vitenko is a very respected person. If anyone doesn't already know (although there are hardly any), he is 56 years old, and he still makes demos! I would really like to make demos at 56 years old! In addition, he is an unsurpassed master of border effects - This, by the way, is very rare, because since the times of Rst7 and X-Trade no one never made cool border effects again. And VNN did and still does por.
The Black-White demo itself consists of three parts: intro, main effect and epilogue. Introduction - horizontal scrolling of a black and white picture (picture, By the way, it's pretty cool). Epilogue - animation and scroller. And about the main effect worth mentioning separately. Of course, those who know VNN will not be at all surprised that this border effect. And very impressive. It's a chessboard bending over exactly in the curb area. Looks really cool and I have absolutely no idea how it is is being done.
Also, the demo plays music on GS, which apparently added additional points.
4 place - Nice day for fishing by moroz1999 & Vassa
Well what can I say? This deme did not make it into the winning top three, but took fourth place says that this demo was the best among all the others, and this is absolutely deservedly so. The first thing that catches your eye is the absolutely stunning graphics. Vassy. I'm not an artist and I can't say anything specific except that she I really like it.
The falling bomb is also done very cool - attribute clouds of several bitplanes look great and create a tangible illusion"multimatographic". The explosion is drawn very carefully and efficiently. The only thing I would like is it was faster, in the same dynamics as the bomb, and so it is too similar to slideshow and slows down the tempo a bit. Or is it slow motion?
Then comes the good old attribute plasma, which, it seems, has never been was as on topic as here. Well, it follows quite logically after everything This is nuclear winter and charred skeletons. And a dead little pussy :)
But the funniest thing in this demo is the little pussy flying at the end on credits.
Thank you, Moroz and Vassa!
3 place - Animations by Halloween group
If you believe the credits - and you and I have no reason not to believe them - this demo was written in 1998, and only after so many years found its audience.
And if this is really so (and it is), then you and I are in a very awkward position. The thing is, if psb made a demo these days, it would did everything completely differently, and now, looking at Animations from above Thirteen years old, he himself perfectly sees all the shortcomings and roughness. remember talking about them again is a waste. It's like blaming the thin, the strong and successful person is that at school he was fat, got bad grades and his everyone beat me for it.
Therefore we willWe will be extremely brief and will focus on the most characteristic points.
We'll skip the Intro under General Sound's shrill solo - there's nothing in it there is no characteristic. But in the Dream multicolor part, I would like to draw your attention pay attention to the screen design. Do you see how clear and harmonious everything is? window with The effects themselves are small, at the bottom is the name of the effect, and, it would seem, the entire screen everything around is empty - but for some reason there is no feeling of emptiness. It seems like everything is on its own places. Remember this feeling. In a minute you will have something to compare it with. Oh multicolor itself has nothing to say - multicolor as multicolor is quite cool, probably for that time.
Then there is a part called Bubble mania - we won’t dwell on that either we will. Fortunately, after it comes a subtle directorial move, which was also implemented in Adrenalize by Global Corp., in the demo from Fantop-98, in the same maybe a year. Unfortunately, we don’t have an exact release date for Animations - quite It’s likely that this part was made before Fantop, but maybe it was even planned earlier.
And now, a minute later, the Morph things part begins (a very apt name, by the way; pun). Now it's time to remember the feeling during Dream Multicolor and compare it with what you see on the screen. Unnecessary background and frame, in where the main effect occurs, completely distract all attention and look very foreign. Remove the framecome up with a normal background if after all, it’s a little empty without him - and the effect would look much better.
The move with greetings is very successful. Both the effect itself and the “Not plasma” die. Unless the font of the ZerO group evokes a touching attack of nostalgia - but this is already minor details.
It all ends with a sine chessboard, which acts as an epilogue.
After this demo you catch yourself thinking about what you really want psb to do something these days, not 1998.
2 place - Scroller by Demarche
An impeccable demo of one effect. The way she should be.
A funny concept that few people understood because they either didn’t read the scroller or I read it without knowing English. It rarely happens that a demo consists of one scroller and one effect, although with variations, looks without the slightest tension throughout a few minutes. And Scroller looks good. And it looks easy to have at least two times. The first time you look at the effects, the second time you read the scroll.
In addition, the music in this demo is the best of all twenty (more precisely, almost twenty - music was not in everyone). The action with digital strikers is simple and ingenious.
Bravo.
1 place - Latrax Minus by Entire Group
And finally, first place.
Paradoxically, this demo is much less flawless than the previous one, but despite this, she is in a completely deserved place. And here's why.
Latrax Minus is like a breath of air. Maybe not quite full breasted yet, maybe not very frosty yet - but definitely a sip and definitely air. There is something in it that has never been seen on the Spectrum before. She somewhat reminiscent of Pondlife - in style, maybe in atmosphere. Maybe just a white background. But still, not only them.
Firstly, in this deme it is unusual in itself and unusual, very competent graphics used. It does not interfere, does not flicker, does not replace the effects or passages in a track - it performs a completely utilitarian function, it serves deme, appears and disappears, complementing the effect. At Latrax we can observe very a rare example of a successful symbiosis of graphics and effect, when you don’t understand where it is, Actually, the graphics, and where the effect is - everything is so uniform. And precisely thanks to the graphics create a feeling of transitions, transitions from one effect to another in best traditions of c64. Robus definitely knows what he's doing. Such things are not allowed do it by accident.
Do you know what my favorite effect in this demo is? Actually, I just caught myself now thinking that this is the first demeof all twenty in which we can talk about completely different individual effects. So, my favorite effect is morphing through noise. It's simple, it's framed, and it's cool.
And even weak text does not spoil this demo. In general, I would advocate a ban using the phrases “Open your mind/eyes” and “Do you like/Do you want” in demos on legislative level. But, in general, what does it matter? I am already you you see - I'm finding fault.
It's a shame that Entire is so rarely made by demos. Almost once every 14 years. This completely wrong. Robus, do you agree?
