it is difficult to find a figure in the history of the bo's youth movements
more controversial, even scandalous, than Timothy Leary -
disgraced Harvard professor and passionate popularizer
psychedelic substances, served about four years in prison
for their activities.

it cannot be said that everywhere Leary worked, him
I developed good relationships with colleagues. he was the first enemy
acquired while already working in San Francisco as a result of his
disrespect for scientific authorities and
commitment to unconventional research methods and
teaching. This continued at Harvard, where he had
custom of sending students to study psychological problems,
such as, for example, alcoholism, not to the library, but to where
they are born, that is, into dysfunctional families. summing up
this first period of Professor Leary's life, it can be said that
he was all about preparing for what happened to him
in the summer of 19bo.

And this is what happened. While in Mexico, he tried a handful
sacred Indian mushrooms containing psilocybin, which
he was treated to a meal by a Mexican colleague. Over the next five hours
Leary experienced what he later called "the deepest religious
the experience of my entire life." It so happened that the mushrooms got
on well-fertilized soil. A miracle has happened! lost in days

the rest of your life.

Quite quickly, the sedate professor turned into an "uncle"
Tim" - a well-known researcher throughout the university and
promoter of "mind-expanding substances". research
were carried out first on themselves and close friends, and then on everyone
interested students. Experiments were carried out first with
psilocybin, and subsequently with LSD, which Leary considered the most
effective of all similar substances. Rumor about his experiments
quickly spread throughout the country and by 19b2 Leary became
recognized leader of the growing psychedelic movement.

it cannot be said that before Leary no one had worked with
psychedelic substances. Experiments, of course, were carried out, however

"missionary"Leary’s activities were precisely what he considered disruption
veils of secrecy from these "tools of spiritual growth" so that,
having assessed all the pros and cons, everyone could make their own conscious
choice: use or abstain. However, having become
minister of worship, he has already lost the opportunity to be
an impartial researcher. As a result, Leary commits
a mistake that is completely unforgivable for a psychologist, but
humanly understandable: it projects its own, in
in all respects a successful experience that enriched him so much,
everyone else, forgetting about the differences in the personal qualities of people
and the degree of their preparedness.

The result, according to Leary, is that psychedelic
substances are almost the only thing for Western people
means of enlightenment, ignoring the negative aspects of them
impact on an unprepared or unstable psyche, not
not to mention the social consequences of their mass use.
although, probably, these were precisely the social consequences for
Leary's most desirable. He dreams that "in twenty years
all public institutions will be transformed in accordance with
insights gleaned from the experience of expanding consciousness"; what
the whole system will changeeducation, and instead of books there will be molecules
certain substances that open the "internal library"; what
the very lifestyle of people will change, and at least two hours a day and
they will devote one day a week to rest from “birth games”
again with the help of substances. This exit of their “ancestral” or
"social games" Leary considered the most important consequence
the use of psychedelics, associating with it the acquisition of inner
freedom. That is why the slogan of the movement that he formulated was:
"turn Op! turn In! Drop Out!", which can be approximated
translate as "connect! tune in! Leave ("game")!"
or, if you like, “throw in! Get in! Drive off!”

Of course, such a vigorous activity of the university
The professor could not help but attract the attention of the management. B
In 1920 Leary was removed from teaching. In 19b5 Leary
travels to India, where he converts to Hinduism,
whose ecstatic rituals were apparently more consistent
his new state of mind.

psychedelic experience for Leary is first and foremost
Thus, the experience is religious, that is, allowing one to gain
absolutely reliable answers to the fundamental questions of existence:
What is life? how did it come about? who am I? where am I going? and so on. In principle, science strives for the same thing. u so dead
science that does not set itself spiritual goals, in the same way
a religion that does not give its followers the opportunity to
experience to be convinced of the correctness of the truths she preaches. therefore
the psychedelic experience can equally impart
convincing religious dogmas and enriching science with new
research methods. global mistake of Western philosophy and
psychology according to Leary is that they focused
their attention to the description of external phenomena, turning away from
inexhaustible source of knowledge hidden inside everyone
person. Since ancient times, research methods have existed in the East
consciousness and its control. With the advent of psychedelics, similar
methods have become available to the West.

processes of expansion and contraction, release and limitation
are universala rhythm that manifests itself at all levels of existence
from the inorganic world to human society. therefore
the collision of evolutionarily advanced individuals with bone
by the establishment is inevitable and necessary. Degree of development of society
determined by the number of freedoms its members have.
therefore, the freedom to expand one’s own consciousness as a path to
unlimited inner freedom should become the same
an inalienable right of the individual, such as the right to life, the desire for
happiness, etc. In the struggle for this right, Leary, however, did not
intended to go into open conflict with the authorities, as, for example,
Jerry Rubin. here his ideal is rather Gandhi. Leary
recommends creating associations of like-minded people like
religious communities and indicate in the registration application that
Psychedelics are used by the community for ritual purposes. The more
there will be such applications, the sooner there will be a shift in public
consciousness.

Developing his views on social development, Leary
forms the "Declaration of Evolution", where one of the main points
it is worth "the constitutional dogma of the younger generation to mutate, drop out of society, form new social
structure", in case existing social instincts
are destructive to life, freedom,
harmony.

From here it's not far to the "Constitution of the United Tribes"
earth" in which they proclaim: the dominance of the laws of evolution in
as divine, universal love, organization of the Free
people into self-governing communities for the purpose of sharing
physical and spiritual improvement, establishment of the Council
All living Beings, which protects the freedom of development of all species
on earth and is made up of representatives of all tribes of people, and
also representatives of all other living beings and future
generations, who are appointed from among specialists who have mastered
non-verbal methods of communication.

With the beginning of 1970, difficult times came for Leary. His
his popularity as a youth leader began to decline. that's how it is in general
the fate of all public figures who risked betting on
changeable contingent. This moment wascarefully chosen
authorities to deal with troublemakers. shadow
prison loomed over Leary. Explanation that he needs weed for
ritual purposes as a devout Hindu, the court was not satisfied,
and Leary was sentenced to about thousand dollars and about three years in prison.
However, at that time Leary had not yet had time to get tired of the authorities, and the Supreme
the court, having considered the appeal, postponed the execution of the sentence. then in
Leary told Playboy magazine that he is not at all afraid of prison
and “the real prison is an internal prison.” Moreover, he
considers prison as an occupational hazard in his occupation,
which he defined as the “alchemy of consciousness.” here it's like he's in the water
looked.

Another trial in a similar case took place in March.
ending in a similar verdict. and both Leary terms
must serve the ball consecutively. this time there was an appeal
rejected, and he went to a general security prison.

Apparently Leary didn’t like it in prison after all, because he had alreadyin September 197o he fled.

At the beginning of 197, American intelligence agents kidnapped
Leary in Afghanistan and brought him back to California where he was
found guilty of escape and received additional to his sentence
five years.

Leary's next release is linked to a mysterious woman,
whom he met in Switzerland, where for some reason he was already without
his only beloved (by his own admission “playboy”)
spouses. According to rumors, it was this woman who organized the grand jury,
at which the Learys, again rumored to have testified
against the organizers of his escape. He himself, however, denies
anydeal with the authorities. anyway, he came out

the last stage of Leary's activity is no longer directly
associated with substances, although he stubbornly continues to develop ideas
that came to his mind precisely under their influence.

L: Psychology appeared only at the beginning of the twentieth century. However
Psychology received priority development in the years of the first andSecond
world wars. The army had to select people based on their
psychological data. This is how behavioral psychology was born.

a group of behavioral psychologists, of which I was one,
quite consciously set myself the goal of learning to describe
regardless of doctors who think in the terminology of psychology.

Nowadays there is practically no such disease or
a painful attitude towards someone that you could not
discuss with others like you, while relying on your own
force, and not on doctor's orders. the success of this psychological
revolution is simply amazing. Naturally to my horror

It's crazy and they're doing a bunch of crazy things! Gorbachev and
it never occurred to me that the Russians would take advantage of their freedom
for the study of alchemy and astrology. However, everything happens exactly
in this way.

we did the same thing at harvard, only this time with
drugs. we learned to use mind-altering
substances and manage these changes in addition to doctors andgovernment to make them available to trained
adults. Currently, the very thought of approved and
government-funded experiments with psychotropic drugs
substances is associated with the image of Joseph Mengle (Nazi doctor,
experimented on people in concentration camps).

I would like to say one more thing about drugs. I recently
received a one-page textbook, published either by the Office for
Drug Enforcement Administration, or the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration
for medicines.

Everyone wants to control drugs UBN, FUKLS, drug addicts...
there is an explanation for this. psychoactive substances are
the most powerful means available to humanity,
to control your consciousness, your brain, develop new
language, building a new society, new cultures and subcultures.

A long history of mind-altering plants has always
associated with shamanism, mysticism, art, poetry,
sexual freedom, respect for the body,
an ecological sense of the unity of all that exists.after all three years of studying drugs, talking and observing

every new drug entering the market. Now, of course, I don't
I buy nothing from the guys from the bar. I get these substances from
chemists, the most respected and responsible people working
in this area.

You should never take drugs obtained from people
whom you do not trust and who are not your friends.
After all, you receive from them the key to your own soul, to your own
brain. I use the word "soul" for the reason that the relation to
mind-altering substances have always been highly
religious. there was nothing of reason here. The issue of legalization
drugs were not even discussed.

Drug use has always been considered
demonic aspect. drug addicts are possessed by an evil spirit.
marijuana is a killer of youth! Before that there was alcohol. u this
there is a reason. An amazing feature of human nature
is that we each have our own ideas about
gods andgoddesses, and people are ready to kill for them. psychedelic
substances helped to realize this.

look now what the government is doing.

He is terrible in anger, and he will strike anyone who does not recognize Him.
There is something that can be called molecular
monetarism. People have beliefs about moral
plants that allow them to measure their consciousness.

Could it be that these receptors in our brain are created by the devil?
Religions curse these plants because they perform
function that religious rituals are supposed to perform: they
open up new perspectives and give a new vision leading to
enlightenment, revelation and illumination. Even among the most
passionate adherents of psychoactive substances there is this
monotheistic fundamentalism.

In my early years I was very pious and strongly opposed
heroin and amphitamine. I didn't know anything about heroin until 1979
until the English psychiatrist Roni Land sent someone to buy

in a simple way, like sending national guardsto catch

L: I am a humanist. I am of the opinion that divinity
lies within, and a person does not need to go to church or
look into the book that he finds on the table in the motel.
Turn within yourself - and you must do this vieste with others
people. Religion is a group sport. they are dealt with face to face
face to face and soul to soul. we must learn to control our soul.
This is a new concept. Divinity is something in which
you should practice like you do in any other
professions. This is something that requires restructuring in
according to the current moment. here you can't back down
order or anything like that. You really
must take care of themselves, put the web in order and
definitely with other people.practicing divinity is the most delightful thing
for a person. The very first thing a child will learn is
coming to first grade, this is that we have a huge brain and
must learn to use it.

    - What do you do daily or weekly to avoid
lose contact with this divinity or get to know it better?

L: Yes, there are, of course, some subtleties here. Are you hanging out with
people who share your spiritual aspirations, hang out with
the most receptive, witty, informed people. All
It's a matter of volume of information. Now an ordinary child of ten years old
the family receives more information than the wisest people of a hundred years
back.

    - In your autobiography you write: “it seems to me that
a person who dies an ordinary death is a deceived victim
guidedsuicide state." What do you mean
under this?

L: You understand that death and the ethics of extinction are
under the complete control of religion and society. u this involvement
increases as government plans are implemented,
concerning health care.

One of the most important political problems is death, as
manifestation of self-esteem, as self-liberation, is
question raised by Dr. Kevarkian. the state has no
this has nothing to do with it. Seven gets together and decides everything
together (we are talking about the situation when a terminally ill

consult a doctor with a request not to prolong his earthly suffering
and don’t stuff it with various painkillers, but let’s say turn it off

accept responsibility, but do not take your own life
on your own.

there comes a time when self-esteem
fades away. Very soon the time will come when I will have to
change diapers. It's part of the process. Symptoms have already appeared. me and
my friends are watching this closely. The best thing about
this is that there are no models here, we have to invent them
yourself. we are the first democratic society trying to solve
problem facing every person and every religion:
death, death, death where, why? when a person gets sick,
priests flock to him like vultures to take care of
his soul. this is the rite of unction, as a good Catholic you should
go through the sacrament, thus the church stakes its soul
print.

L: From the ages of 10 to 12, I was a Boy Scout. I was
a good boy scout. I went to Catholic school for eight years and
even studied at a Jesuit college because I was kicked out
all Protestant colleges. the Catholic Church provides
amazingly powerful influence on human civilization. For
me Pope and Mother Teresa are the worst people
on the ground. One heads to Africa, suffering from famine and
overpopulation, and encourages the birth of more and more small
Catholics who will die within a week of birth. A mother
Teresa is bustling around in Calcutta, calling for more and more children to be born,

    L: That's a good idea. Up to bo's similar concepts -
turning your life into a ceremony, turning your life into

were not particularly common. It is hardly possible to think of more
a sad sight than a great scientist or an acid lover,
who has comprehended everything in the world, but cannot name his
