In the years 1955-1960. studied English. literature in
Western Reserve (Cleveland) and Columbia (New York) University, 
where received bachelor and master degrees, respectively.

 In 1960-1963. served in the Ohio National Guard, in the years 
1963-1966. - In the Army reserve. Worked in the Social Security 
since 1969 - professional writer. The secretary-treasurer of 
the society  (1967-1968). 
Four-time winner <Hugo> (in 1966 - for the novel <... And call 
me Conrad> in 1968 - for novel <Lord of Light> in 1976 - for 
the story <EXECUTIONER> in 1982 - a short story ), three-time winner <Nebula> (in 1965 - For the 
story <One who gives shape> and for short story , in 1975 - for the story 
<EXECUTIONER>) two-time winner Fosterovskoy Poetry Prize (he 
1957.1959.), winner of the prize ), winner of the Association

American Libraries, winner of the magazine <Locus> (in 1984 - 
for the creation of the series <The Chronicles of Amber>).  In 
1974 he became the guest of honor of 32-th World science 
fiction convention, in 1978 - the honored guest of the 
Australian national convention.
