1950 remained vacant and was later replaced by General
Walter B. Smith.

 June 24, 1947 civilian pilot,flying in the Cascade region
mountains in Washington state, discovered nine disk-like devices,
flying in formation at high speed, Although this was not the first
known observation of similar objects, the event became the first
source for wide public disclosure. Hundreds of messages followed
reports on the observation of such objects. Many of them came from
very reliable military and civilian sources.
 These messages were analyzed independently by efforts -
mi several different directions in the Armed Forces for
revealing the truth of these objects from the standpoint of national interests
