                          And our music is not depressing,
                          not evil and not black! Just dark...

   "Gods of Hellfire", "six outcasts who have better
all you can do is play flamethrowers", "fire-breathing Teutons",
"fireproof Aryans", "a dozen monotonous drill songs,
a mentally abnormal soloist - and success is guaranteed to you,”
"neo-Nazi rock", "the most courageous band of our time"
- such varied responses, flattering and not so flattering, more and more often
appear in many newspaper and magazine articles.
   You can adore or hate RAMMSTEIN, but you can't help but
admit that this group is unique not so much due to its
music, laconic and monumental, not so much enchanting
fiery show and not even the content of the texts, harsh, but not
vulgar and not one-sided, but because it is the only
a collective that developed its native German language (not
distinguished by special musicality, as is commonly believed) on
such heights of show business, where for many years undivided
English ruled.
   Now the sensually raw music of RAMMSTEIN has found a response in
in the hearts of thousands of Russian fans.  It's time for a little
shed light on this phenomenon called RAMMSTEIN.From the history of the group.
   August 28, 1988 three American fighters
collide in the air and fall onto the crowd of spectators during
air show.  More than forty people were burned alive, and the same number
then died in hospitals, about 200 received various burns and
mutilation.  A disaster comparable only to Chernobyl occurred
at the American base in the town of RAMSTEIN (with one "M"), land
Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
   In 1994, a certain ambitious young rock band
publicly declares that she chose her name in honor (or in
memory) of a memorable catastrophe.  However, in earlier
Interviewed by the musicians, all from the former GDR, they assured the press that
that coincidence is just an accident. They couldn't know about it
incident in West Germany, because  lived for a peculiar
information "iron curtain", and the name was chosen simply
at random, because  this was necessary for the conclusion of their first
contract with a recording studio.   (Rammstein in
Germany call special concrete barriers for cars on
sidewalks).   Moreover, if we parse and translate this
a magical-sounding word, you get “ram stone”,
"stone ram", "stone press" or even "gravestone"
(RAMMEN - compact, crush, press, punch; STEIN -
stone).  And if you go even further and remembergroup inclination
to allegories of a sexual nature, then...decide for yourself what

   Composition.
   The core of the group was: Christoph "DOOM" Schneider (drums),
worked as an unknown person at the telephone company and as a loader at
mountain weather station;    Richard Kruspe-Bernstein (guitar),
real name Tsven, worked as a cashier, tried his hand at
journalism, and is also a wrestling champion and a terrible
sweet tooth;  Till Lindemann (vocals, lyrics), vice champion
European swimming team, who left the sport due to a serious injury,
then worked as a loader in a store, and is now single
a father of many children who loves milk and breeds fish. Later to
The band was joined by: bassist Oliver "LARS" Riedel, guitarist Paul
Landers and a very bright personality - keyboardist Christian Lorenz
nicknamed FLAKE, the only one in the group who has a higher
education and even defended his doctoral dissertation in the field
biology;  in addition, he is interested in painting and is very
draws well, and is also interested in folklore and
modern dances and enjoys demonstrating their wild
mixture during concerts.

   So, such different people came together and not only good
worked together, but also won millions of hearts around the world.
Passions are raging around the group and, it seems, are not going to subside.
Howeverall debates center around what lies on
surfaces: metal music, fire show, during
which the athlete - Til launches fiery arrows into the hall or burns
all from head to toe, looking at the audience through
impenetrable black glasses with a creepy red laser sight.
Physically well-developed guys demonstrate brilliant performance
body sweat, causing hysterical squealing from the female half of the audience.
Til balances on the edge of decency, playing with real
with a sadistic whip or taking explicit poses, and even
crosses this line, depicting something like this with Christian,
that people with weak hearts should not watch...The audience is hysterical,
critics are salivating.   Glory to the odious and provocative
German-speaking band thunders like a barrage of their guitar sound
waves all over the world, shaking the moral foundations of society...
   But what is under this impenetrable shell? This kind of music is not
could have arisen out of nowhere, and similar texts are examples
black romance of horror and bleeding melancholy - impossible
"suck it out of your finger."  So let's try to lift the veil and
look at RAMMSTEIN from the perspective of a researcher.

   Creativity is always closely connected with personality

responsibilities corresponding to his position as a “leader”: he rarely
gives interviews, and most often has to take the rap for it

somewhere on the periphery). Til is a man with surprisingly deep
and an elaborate inner world:
   "My lyrics arise from feelings and dreams, but still more
from pain rather than from desire. I often have terrible nightmares
bloody scenes and I wake up at night covered in sweat. My texts -
a kind of valve for the lava of feelings in my soul."
   "Texts are Til's business, in them he tells very
intimate things about your inner world. I wouldn't like to be
in Til's shoes: his soul is tormented by doubts and contradictions, he is in
equal parts moralist and monster..." says Christophe
Schneider.
   According to my assumption, black romance, melancholy, pathos and
the group's lyrics owe their despair to their difficult spiritual state
vocalist and lyricist.  Til deeply feels his
loneliness, loneliness in a crowd:
   "In the end, I'm still alone.
   Time stops
   And I'm cold.
   It's cold..."

   Even Til’s angels are lonely: “We are scared and we are alone”
(ENGEL(angel), from the album SEHNSUCHT (longing)).  Loneliness
scares Til:
   "Keep each other safe from heartache,
   because the time you spend together will
   so fleeting.
   Because, despite your long-term union,
   It will seem like minutes to you.
   Protect each other from loneliness together"
   (HERZELEID (heart pain) from the album of the same name)
   But loneliness is also Thiel’s need,
For the sake of peace, he is ready for much: 
   "The little man died just for show.
   He really wanted to be alone..."

   Being a private person, Til is burdened by excessive intimacy
other people and their attempts to look into his soul, but at the same time
is in dire need of support, which he cannot find even in his native
mothers:
   "The breast did not cry milk for me,
   I didn't have a secluded place to hide,
   the sun never shone for me,
   no one gave me a name..."

   Of course, it could not but influence creativity
team and environment. Germany is a country with a rich cultural
heritage.  In the lyrics of the group, the features found their clear manifestation
Baroque literature with its motifs of despair, hopelessness,
pessimism and mysticism, sophisticated pretentiousness, as well as passion
to depict all kinds of horrors, tragedies and other nightmares.
InfluenceGothic tradition is also very strong: not only
symphonic music and female vocals (created, however, under
using a computer), which transformed the compositions SONNE, MEIN HERZ
BRENNT, NEBEL and others into works full of drama, but also
directly gothic symbols (candles, voices, incest,
wound) occur quite often: “Come on, kids, listen
carefully!  I am the voice from the pillow, I brought you something..."
(MEIN HERZ BRENNT (my heart is burning) from the album MUTTER).
Loneliness.  Passion.  Unbelief and godlessness. These three components
RAMMSTEIN absorbed romanticism. Passion is the calling card
group card": "We glorify passion, pain is beautiful, like
never!"  (FEUERRADER (fire wheels), single, not included in
album).  With godlessness, everything is not so simple. At first glance, in
Nothing is sacred to these “fire worshipers.”   Til even
explicitly states in the song WEISES FLEICH ("pure
flesh" or "white meat"): "There is no God in my sky!" It's as if he
denies himself the right to be closer to God: “The Lord sees that I am not
I want to be an angel!"  (ENGEL). He fears God
considers himself guilty and asks for punishment in song
BESFRAFE MICH (punish me), which many take for
cheap sadomasochism: "Your greatness makes me small, you
must be my judge."  However, Thielalso begs for support:
"Lord, stay with me, open your gates..." (WILDER WEIN
(wild wine), single).  He doesn't believe in angels who can
fail and not come to help: “Not a single angel will come to
avenge you" (MEISTER from the album HERZELEID), or:
   "But the angel does not descend,
   and only the rain cries over the grave"
   (SPIELUHR from the album MUTTER)
   In many songs there is a real resentment towards God and
bitter disappointment in him.  Thiel often speaks out in
interview: “If God loves us, then why does he allow all the atrocities
and misfortune? I don't want to believe in such a cruel god."
   The deep symbolism of the group, which has found its own, is also very interesting
the brightest expression, in my opinion, in the MUTTER video, literally
filled with symbols (mostly female): night,
darkness, a hole covered with bars on top - a woman’s womb, from
which there is no way out for someone who was never born or was killed before
birth of a baby. The boat is also a symbol of the female womb, giving
life.  However, the hero rushes from this boat into the black night
water on which the lunar path is silvered - a symbol of the road to
world of the dead. But at the same time, the path for a lonely sailor in black leather
cloak indicates the light of a lamp or lantern - a symbol of maternal
love and care, especially towards the terminally ill
to the child.  In the muddy water, the face of a suicide is calm and serene,and
the dead body looks so much like an unborn baby in
amniotic fluid. At the end of the clip there is a huge dirty half naked
a man in whom it is not so easy to recognize Till, with shyness and
points with interest at the corpse of the bird. The bird is a symbol of pure
and an immaculate soul. A child's soul?...
   So, the RAMMSTEIN group is deep and ambiguous. And before
declare that its furious sound and stupid "chants"
similar to fascist orders from movies are only suitable
skinheads, I think, should first listen to the dark lyrical
ballads, the intonation of the narration, take a closer look at the video
and into the eyes of the vocalist.  I'm not even talking about the fact that it's good and
learn German, since no translation is capable of
convey the full depth and ambiguity of the group’s lyrics.
