ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Andrew Savichev To All 18 February 1998

Нi, All!

Hello, Evgeniy!

Apparently, it takes more than a day for the soap from me to reach you?
Well, I’ll have to publicly comment on your appeals to
deeply respected All addressed to me.

>TY> But it would be interesting to listen to AS’s (serious) opinion. Or is there nothing
>TY> to say?
> As in nothing? There is something. He is already in full swing describing how cool life will be for the
authors under the “new order”. But for some reason I just don’t like this order “as an author,” and even more so “as a user.”
Firstly, I think not only about the authors and not even so much about the authors,
but first of all about Spectrum users and, above all, those of them who are
connected to networks.
Secondly, between my project and Sergei’s project there is only one similarity,
namely: the network does not notice the difference between FREEWARE and N-WARE products.
I ask you not to attack the latter term and not to demand reference books, laws,
instructions and other things where its definition is given.
I introduced the term myself!
It means:
1) a product in quality not inferior to a commercial one;
2) freely distributed on networks;
3) with the support of those users who paid for it money;
4) with code protected from modification and research by copyright;
5) prohibited from distribution for money outside networks;
6) in a certain way“marked”.
There is one, but significant difference:
the price for the product is announced when it is 90% ready, the collection of money is entrusted
by the author to a “network trader” (the author himself, if he wants, can act in this
role).
I.e. network users pay for a specific product, a demo version of which they
saw or read a detailed description, to a specific author, the style and quality
of whose products they can study using FREEWARE and DEMO versions.
Prices for N-products are not assigned arbitrarily, but in a certain
price category (depending on the class of the author and the category of the product
(newspaper, magazine, release, author's game, system software and etc.) )
The price precedent rule applies, i.e. if a similar N-product
was sold before for X bucks, then any subsequent product should have
a similar price with comparable quality.
No organization coordinating this market _exists_!
Anarchy is the mother of order!
The network itself coordinates all this activity.
Legal channels are used to transfer money: banks, network banks,
mail.
SpectrumNetBank and SpectrumUnion are one of the possible consequences of the action of this
self-regulating mechanism - and only!

>AS> Well, what did they do with the honest people like in the old days? or where did “not caught - not
>AS> a thief” come from?
> Presumption of innocence, proveOnly a court can incriminate a person.
And did you often go to court when you were beaten at school? ;)
Besides, people won’t lie, “without fire there is no smoke”;
“you can deceive one person for a very long time, you can deceive everyone for a while, but you can’t deceive everyone for a long time”

> Clear, but not entirely. For one simple reason - do you know how much you need to do to become a “trader”, in the sense of a “small private entrepreneur”?
Imagine, I know, that’s why I didn’t become one! :)
But find yourself a familiar director of a company whose Charter is “rubber”,
draw up an agreement with him for the creation of a software product, include in it all
points from my project and create a precedent for everyone. Weak?

>AS> 1) I definitely support byte trading on networks! In relation to the Spectrum
AS> this means enormous efficiency. In a small volume, you can transfer a bunch
AS> of everything!
> Again, a small disclaimer - in FIDO, “byte trading” is prohibited.
I have already explained how to get around this. From the point of view of FIDO, you just threw in here
another FREEWARE.

>AS> It’s very simple: some people want something so bad that they can’t stand it (they were impatient
AS> that is;)), others - “so-so”, and the third one doesn’t give a damn at all
>AS> So let everyone think about it if he really caresI have to, but I don’t want to pay,
>AS> will someone pay for it to whom it’s generally “like a goat’s button accordion”?
> I don’t understand the meaning of your tirade. Personally, I now have a lot of “drum” programs. First of all - demos and some toys. Good system
programs are far from a dream, but only if they are GOOD, and this can
be determined only by working with them.
And when you buy a “left compact”, do you have time to get acquainted with its
quality? Excuse me, but get a product for $1-5, at the same time get the right
to its support by the author and still wrinkle your nose that you are not 100% satisfied with everything about it? ...

> And now, resolve my contradictions: “I agree to pay only for SOME
>programs and ONLY AFTER I am personally convinced that I need them, but I must
>pay IN ADVANCE, and FOR ALL programs.”
This is not for me, but for Sergei. In my version, you pay only for what you urgently need, you get everything else for free, but you also don’t have the rights to accompaniment (for a freebie)!

> Okay, my next question is how and who will collect this money
>(and a lot of it). What are the control mechanisms?
Regional collectors collect amounts from $10 to $100 and send
to a network trader authorized by the author. The network trader himself understands
regionalcollectors. Physically, the money will go to him after his command:
the software is 100% ready, tested, a description and license have been drawn up -
from the author;
the money is collected 100% - from regional collectors.
Since the regions are more or less stable and each of these collectors, in turn
can play the role of a network trader (is it clear why?) -
it is logical for all of them become SpectrumNetBank bankers, then there would be no need
to physically send money, but only that small part that is a deficit
who does not have it (buyers>sellers) to those who do have it
(buyersThis is how any real banking system works.
Just in case, I’ll give an example again:
Samara: Evgeny Milun sells N-Oberon Nxx magazine online for $400, but in Samara
and the region there are also buyers, not only N-Oberon, but also N-BR from St. Petersburg.
Then the money that was brought in to a Samara banker for purchase by Samara residents
N-BR from St. Petersburg simply goes into the pocket of E. Milun, without even leaving Samara.
A similar thing happens in St. Petersburg.
Now imagine that we have not 2, but 22 regions and between them we already have
cross payments. Here you can’t do without a coordinator and reporting.
That’s why this is a real network bank! with a central headquarters
and regionaldepartments. Only according to the Charter, he must service
exclusively payments using N-software. If such a system seems convenient to non-network traders, then so do their operations.
In general, non-network traders, if they have an IBM PC, crypto-protection tools and
modern high-speed modems, can become network traders at the same time.
I have neither the ability nor the desire to do all this myself.
If our business people - spektrumists consider this idea worthy of attention,
then let them “put it all on” on your feet."
Now about SpectrumUnion. If it is a non-profit organization with the goals of supporting young people's computer creativity and holding an annual festival, then it may have a commercial subsidiary, SpectrumNetBank, to carry out its socially beneficial goals. Everything will be completely
official and completely legal.
Everyone is afraid to get involved with this, and first of all Moscow ;)

> If it’s not difficult, a list of literature that stipulates the standards
of domestic Spectrum commercial software, and a set of services to support it?
Here you are develop these requirements - I don’t mind and maybe I’ll also criticize a little.

>AS> Otherwise, what’s the point in
AS> this whole idea, write to yourself as you want and distribute as is in
>AS> as FREE software ;)
> So here I amabout the same thing - what's the point in this idea if everyone writes
>how they want? And no one considers it their duty to maintain programs.
And that’s the point: to throw more and better software on the network
for which the authors can get paid!

> I just don’t understand what does SOS have to do with it? What you described should have been
an ordinary market.
With a network bias, I would say, but what does SOS have to do with it - I don’t know myself :)

> I’m afraid you’re too carried away by the “great ideas of equality”... Creating
your own program, competing with the original one, is ALREADY detrimental to the author (albeit and
>indirect).
It was precisely about non-creation. :)
>
>AS> 2) If you want your copyrights to be respected, always respect
>AS> the rights of other authors.
> First of all, users.
If authors cannot respect each other’s rights, then what can we say about
users :(

>AS> And who are they?
>AS> Unlike ordinary traders, this is potentially any of us!
>AS> After all, what is required from a network trader?
>AS> 1) Support the “author’s promotion”
> Oh, don’t say those words “support the author”. They give me heartburn.
Well, you don’t need it - you’re a well-known person, and I won’t refuse a favorable review
about my software (if there is one) from one of the luminaries - I won’t refuse,
justI will say thank you very much! :)

>AS> 2) and most importantly, collect money from people and transfer it to the author.
> What do you think, I will agree to send at least one
>ruble to the same Novikov ?????!!!!! And I thought the MMM tendencies have long been overcome in our country.
Sergey seems to have given you no reason to do this!
On the contrary, after he finally brought RVL4 to mind, I respect him very
strongly!

I greet you from the bottom of my heart, Andrew!

AS> 5) prohibited for distribution for money outside networks;
AS> 6) “marked” in a certain way. There is one thing, but it is essential

Listen, you fool of the king of heaven (and that is what I will call you until you descend from heaven to the sinful earth), stop baby talk! Who needs your notes if no one will look for them, or if they find _nothing_ will do! Here in Donetsk, a left-handed merchant freely sells broken products, such as:
ZX-Format, Spectrofon, ULO-2, X-Reversy, etc., i.e. products released by
some fairly reputable people. Come, clean up the merchant's face or whatever
you are going to fight. You will never even know all the points where they will take money for N-war software, especially since you will not be able to do anything! And by banning commercial distribution outside networks, you will simply cut off all law-abiding
traders and allow pirates to enjoy what they want - free software! Just as they spit on copyrights now, they will spit on all your
“marks”. Only now can copy protection save some time, and you
are going to hand them the software on a silver platter! Stupid!!!

Due to the fact that the proposed projectswere too utopian - I offer
my own to the judgment of ALL:

1. It is necessary to create a cohesive network of traders, at the head of each region to find
large enough to make the most prompt delivery along already
knurled paths through them to small ones.
2. Large traders collect information about small ones in nearby cities and
compile lists available for general consideration.
3. Next publish these lists, as the fact of traders are now published,
gathering data together (how the pointlist is organized) and giving the author the opportunity
_to_ choose how he will distribute his product: with the help of only
large traders, or independently negotiating with smaller ones.
4. If the author trusts the larger ones, then they must distribute the product
to the smaller ones themselves, having discussed prices with the author.
5. It didn’t hurt. would be a list of those software products that are being prepared for release at the moment and the prices requested by the author for this product. This
will allow traders to evaluate their strength and prepare to purchase the next
product.
6. As a result, if the list of traders turns out to be large enough, the price for
an individual trader, and therefore for the buyer, will be low and no one
will go to buy anything from pirates. It will work the way it works now in
Donetsk.

Hasta la vista.

Great ideas, I agree.

The only thing is to find people who will do this in the echo, compile
lists of traders, software and offers. Also, these people will have to collect
statistics on traders' proposals for the distribution of any product, since
not all authors have quick access to the network, let
the organizers use nearby ones for communication. These people must have a certain amount of free time, and easy access to the Internet and fido.

This information and lists of traders, software, statistics, and regional
representatives must be regularly distributed to all publications. This project seems to be more resilient and does not require premature investment of money.

SN<= Join, good idea.

That's right, in this regard, I propose my candidacy for the place of the person
collecting data on the software offer. We ask the authors to post data to me
approximately in this form:

Product name, type, group name, city, estimated release date
of the full and demo versions, estimated full price.

Statistics on small traders are best collected regionally, it is easier
to do this for large traders, based on the data provided by
users (everyone in their city knows where and who sells the software for
specta).

Incorrect comparison. When I buy a video camera from Uncle Vasya for $10, I will not demand a guarantee and so on from him, because its real cost is $250. If
I buy it in a store for $100, I will demand a guarantee and everything

They won’t be able to. If they throw software onto the network, people (90%) will receive it for free and will not pay money (for example, it would never even occur to me to pay
money for what I have already received - and even if they scold me in grittings, it will not prevent me from sleeping peacefully at night). If they don’t throw software onto the network, people

To start the project, you need to find a few more people who can
promote it, and establish clear and efficient communication between them, preferably on
the Internet. Publish the project, if possible, in all electronic publications.
For now, I propose not to start working, but to try to finally revive
the project, and the participation of just two people is not enough for this. Slava, by the way, began to periodically throw information about traders into the echo. I would very much like to hear his opinion
about the project. You also need the opinion of large associations like DR.

Why, let the network play the role of an exchange, where something like
trading will take place, any information will be given. When creating a single such organization, all
traders will receive timely information about upcoming products, and then
at the same time almost the products themselves. One of the bad qualities of the current Spectrum software market is the chaos inherent everywhere and always, and this project will put an end to the mess. After all, Slava did something similar, and it’s already
working.

Yeah, so here’s another point I missed, about “revitalizing the stage.”
Well, the question is too serious, I didn’t foresee such a global solution in my project
, because from my point of view, in the “big market” and the “stage”
everything is o’k.
I’ll limit myself to a tiny remark. ;)
As you know, our world consists, roughly speaking, on the one hand of:
authors, users, traders (alphabetical order, please do not get caught),
on the other hand, of naturals (reals) and virtuals, on the third of networkers
and non-networkers, on the fourth of civilized spektrumists and savages.

It is clear that there is a certain optimal proportion, as in any Markov chains.
I.e. the assumption that for every 5,000 users there may be
100 authors is
absolutely absurd, if only the authors have to make a living from these users.
We will leave the question of the “quality” of authors and users aside for now.
Who needs numbers - please!
! As always in my calculations, this is a rough estimate (guessing the order, “top
estimate”)
Intuitively clear, what a person on average can afford to spend on
services related to a certain personal itemconsumption of no more than 2 times the cost of the item itself. Let's assume the average "lifespan" of a Spectrum computer is 9 years (for many it is
just the age from 12-14 to 21-23 years). And with the cost of the computer itself
$20 - $150 (on average $85), we get 2x85=$170 for 9 years or $19 per year
Consequently, the average “market productivity” is 5000x$170/9= $94,444 i.e.
about 94 thousand dollars per year.
But once again I repeat this is the UPPER limit at 5,000 average buyers.
It is clear from this that we can easily “feed” about 5 “major teams”
of 2-4 people (15 people) each with an income of about $2-3 thousand per year and
about 10 more average teams (30 people) with incomes of $1-2 thousand per year.
The number of semi-amateur teams can amount to (this according to linear extrapolation) 20 teams of up to 50 people (I’m talking only about those who systematically
give at least some results)
But this, I repeat, is the “upper estimate”, provided that:
1) the authors work “to the limit” and produce excellent software that you can’t help but buy ;)
2) users do not freeload, but buy this very software.
Revival "scenes" can take place not through collecting money in one hand,
but through painstaking multifaceted work.
The main thing in this work is the mutual support of the authors, their reduction"costs
of author's labor" through consultations and exchanges of developments.
The network should be a full-fledged circulatory system, feeding the "brains" with everything
necessary.
We also need to specifically work with hard makers if we do not want to lose
the real Spectrum, and with it most of the users.
This, ugh, ugh, ugh - will really happen collapse!
We must not forget about virtuals; “brains” are especially valuable, i.e. those of them
who know a lot and who can finally
drag ideas, methods, approaches, algorithms from other platforms to the Spectrum!
But virtual users are, as a rule, wealthy people and
therefore can support the Spectrum with rubles.
Now about the most important thing - about Spectrum users, which we
all are, including authors and traders (the majority).
We need to do this, so that there is a healthy climate, so that people feel comfortable, pleasant, comfortable and, most importantly, INTERESTING!
Everything will happen, our people will grow in numbers - DESPITE EVERYTHING!!!
The rest seems to be unnecessary to explain.

With respect, Andrey Savichev/CGS

CGS is just one of the semi-amateur teams so far, despite energetic
efforts, not yielding results ;)

It is unlikely that large traders will provide information about their actual
competitors. Example - XL-Design and f. Scorpio have relations with the whole country, but
they will not reveal their connections (for obvious reasons). And they will do the right thing :))

SN> What did he do? - Sell the game of the year to the top ten traders.
SN> Will they take other products? How many traders took the COUNTRY OF OZ,

Sereg, if the number of traders who submitted applications is large, then the price for
the final trader will be small, but if the author asked for an absurd amount for a
project that is not worth it, then of course he will at least learn from the coalition that
there are applications, but the price is not satisfactory. Also, the author may
offer to sell not the distribution right, but the finished disks with the program, if he is not satisfied with the price. The main task of the coalition is to connect everyone into one network, so that Fido and the Internet fully work for the benefit of the Spectrum, so that the authors of the software do not languish in the unknown, and do not decide to give up everything because of this. We first need to try to launch this project, and then maybe
SOS can be established on its basis, the main thing is clearly established operational
communication between everyone.

SN> In short, this will extend the life of the Spectrum for a couple of days, and in any case

Perhaps we first need to sort out the connection. And then the following picture: 1. the author
released the software, and does not know who can buy it, and if only a few buy it, then
the final price for the trader is high, 2. the trader does not know where to buy the software, and
is forced to take itwhere you have to. And everything in this spirit, in short, it’s not orderly.

Why? For example, for Shalaev you can optimize a program for 2 mega memory - another way to protect network software. There is no longer any need to achieve compatibility of
software for virtualization with all types of emulators; it is enough that it works on at least
one of them (a decent one, of course).

That's right. But Andrey is right - the network has nothing to do with it. This is your business as a trader.
It’s just not clear what prevented you from reaching an agreement among yourself when Specky was, let’s say, more popular? At one time, Kano managed to create such a network of traders-hackers. It doesn’t matter that it’s pirated, it really worked, brought

I see how it works in Donetsk ;) Two beggars (I’m exaggerating ;), but proud
traders and next to him an overweight pirate, whom our two eagles

Or are you also proposing punitive measures against pirates - no accept
them into the association, not allow them to trade _and_ legally? I don’t think that the

VM> Lugansk they will sell their own mother?

Slav, don’t pay attention, _normal_ traders will always trade
the proprietary version, and a _normal_ hacker is not so blind that it got out of
under his nose a program that he didn’t want to give to anyone. :-))) Damn, just like in the days of ninjas: night, computer, a bunch of floppy disks, a rope by the window, an open window, a black silhouette, the disk is copied and stolen. :-)))) Well, in mass publications and programs it would be nice to cover all this nasty action in full, so that it would be ashamed. If only the STAGE would do this.

With respect, Alex from FFC COMPUTERS.

From Eugene Malkov To All 3 March 1998

I greet you from the bottom of my heart, Dmitry!

Sun Mar 01 1998, Dmitry Grigoryev squeezed the keyboard, hoping that the following words would reach Eugene
Malkov:

EM>> Why does Slava spread it himself? Because I'm not sure that he will be able
EM>> to get this money if he sells distributions! List

DG> Do you know why you’re not sure? Now I’ll show you:

EM>> there are not many traders, and he wouldn’t sell the distribution kit for more than $40
EM>>.

It’s just that I, for example, no longer have free money. Everyone understands that
it is more profitable to sell copies, but wholesale (the distribution kit can be called that) has always and
everywhere been much cheaper.

DG> $40=250 rubles, divided by 30=8 copies. You didn't sell 8 copies of CV when
DG> you said you served 40 people last weekend? This is from that
DG> opera that you couldn’t sell 10 sets of SPF... (It’s interesting that you
DG> generally sell to so many people if you don’t sell frivolous software
DG>?) Well, come on, like an honest trader, how much did you earn?
DG> Or I’ll find out and distort it myself.

I can count: we’ve sold so far 48 sets of CVs.
Translated into Ukrainian hryvnia, one copy costs 7.00 hryvnia, we sell for
10.00. Taking into account the payment for transportation, we have 2.50 hryvnia per copy.

2.50 x 48 = 120 hryvnia

This allowed us to purchaseseveral author's products (in particular,
to pay for the translation for The Wizard of Oz, which is still going to the author:( )

As for SPF - 12 copies of the 22nd issue and 15 of the 23rd were sold. Not a lot, but
it paid off over time (this despite the fact that we should not have sold them at such
a high price, since they are already frivara, but we had to :(. )

DG> What was required to be proven. Maybe now you will be ashamed to mention
DG> SPF?

No, nothing shameful was done on my part.

That’s right, I’m shocked myself, but take into account what they _themselves_ told
about it! I reported only about Lugansk, and there are a lot of people there... Maybe indeed
some of them didn’t want to, but they treated it negligently, left it to chance, didn’t tell anyone about
it :(

It’s a shame, of course, like the authors themselves... We started distributing

letters that came about distribution to my address will be Forwarded to

From Eugene Malkov To All 3 March 1998

VM> The key phrase is “with good protection.” You
VM> raised an interesting question - should the author _seriously_ be concerned with protecting his
VM> program?
VM> Everyone, of course, understands - copyright law, the laws of the Russian Federation, but in reality...

Oh, if only our laws worked... By the way, in relation to foreign
products, there are no laws at all in Ukraine! So you can’t grab anyone by the ass (sorry) according to the law!

VM> So: “Doesn’t the author provoke hackers and pirates if the author
VM> is careless about protecting his program?”

It does, Slava, unfortunately :(

From Stanley Ivanenko To All 4 March 1998

I repeat, what exactly is my fault? I'm sitting writing DEPTH magazine, and outside my doors, at least trade with your relatives! I write a magazine and that's it! The rest is not interesting to me!
If you want to know the address of the person who broke it, I’ll give it to you. If you want, deal with it yourself, we don’t buy software, we don’t sell it, and we don’t deal with it. Got it?
So figure it out first, and then attack! The fact that we have such a “bias” is no secret to anyone, that our city is the leader in crime in Ukraine, and where else would “black” hackers breed here. But this is one in 10. Because of one, everyone should suffer? What do you think?

From Dmitry Grigoryev To All 4 March 1998

Slava, tightening up the defense is a useless exercise. Imagine an arms race, where one side is building up cannons, and the other is improving shields.
Moreover, the former do not forget to shoot at the enemy from time to time, when for the sake of warning, when they have destroyed a couple of populated areas. This is stupid in itself, and in our conditions it is a loss for the defender. There is no end here,
since the days of inventions in the field of protection are long gone (on the Spectrum with
a disk drive), and hacking technology has already grown so much that it prevents
all possible combinations of modern protection methods with a reserve. Yes, you can increase the time spent on hacking more and more... So what? After all, the shelling continues, the other side suffers losses and is forced to patch up the holes. If
this time is simply long, first several “under-hacks” appear, they
will help freeloaders hold out until a clean hack, and will scare traders away from
hasty purchases... If the time exceeds the limit that is reasonable for a cracker... This
is more difficult to do than it seems at first glance. I think the excess will be
unbearable for both - the crackers and the authors. That is, you can tinker with your program for months without any guarantee that you didn’t miss a little clue that allows a cracker to break or bypass the protection in half an hour. Or after
a couple of months you will see the mistake yourself andyou will start over again... Not on any platform have you yet managed to achieve victory by shielding your brainchild with your own chest.

Ugh... Poor defense does not provoke a cracker. Pirates are provoked only
by the cost of the product, and crackers can either be bought, or offended, or hurt their
professional pride by making a really cool defense and saying
“Weak?” The latter can be protected using approximately the same methods. And the author should
be careless about his own glitches and, in general, the quality of the product, and not
waste energy and nerves on a meaningless race.

This is a theory. Practice shows that releasing a commercial product without protection
on the Spectrum is now either pointless or impossible (I mean the absence
of a civilized market). Protection gives, in our conditions, some “time to collect
money,” but... half measures are all, bloomers, I would say ;)

VM> With warm greetings,
VM> Slava!

PS: I, of course, do not exclude the situation when the author likes to engage in protection
and distribution, especially if he is good at it. But this is not relevant to the topic, is it? :)

That’s what I thought - in fact, that’s why I asked. Those. to the city, which is “the leader in
crime in Ukraine,” another shameful stigma will not
cause much damage.

Perhaps even more people have cheated the CV, but they will keep these versions for themselves without
any dissemination, and they cheated for interest. Another thing is when it goes on sale, it’s already very bad. And good hackers are vigilant.

If you are talking about the St. Petersburg network (SpbZXNet), then the gate is conducted at least through
5030/399.12 (Igor Gruzdev). Ask him about the gating conditions (most likely
you will have to get a point at /399 ;)).

If you are comfortable reading mail “in manual mode”, then call Roman
Alexandrov or again Igor on the BBS (1356205, from 0 to 8) and enjoy :) There, IMHO,
almost all St. Petersburg echoes are there:
SpbZXNet.general; .games; .code; .love; ........ etc.

In vain. From a good hacker, and not a pirate, the author will not have any problems, and Spectrumists will have excellent branded software. A hacker-pirate doesn't fit
this definition, but that's something else.
