SuperSpectrum... Is it needed?

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Starwalker To All 4 June 1997

Hello everyone!

I have been reading this conference for several months now and I must say that I am
surprised by some of the topics that the esteemed Sinclairists are discussing.
Of course, Spectrum cannot compete with PC, even with HT. And this is precisely why I want to ask everyone who reads me a question - why fool yourself by creating different superspectrums, superpentagons and other super-arithmometers, when there is a platform that has been established throughout the world and has no competitors (except PowerPC)? Yes, I'm talking about a trivial machine, which is an eyesore for us everywhere - a PC with a processor compatible with Intel processors. I, too, was (and I hope I still am) a sinclairist who enthusiastically played various dizzy and caldron games, but that was 6 years ago. Already for that time, the Spectrum was a relic of the past,
but what can we say about the year 1997? Look at all these new models like the Pentagon and pathetic ATMs, is their architecture strikingly different from the architecture of the Spectrum 128? NO ! What about the graphics? This moronic picture format, in which an 8x8 pixel square can only have one color.
Of course, for 1982 it was cool, but after 2 years Atari
was selling its computers with much more advanced graphics and even
a separate graphics processor. Spectrum is a CORPSE, which needs to be consigned to history, and not to be buried in mausoleums, creating countlessnumber
clones and machines compatible with it, including the mythical
SuperSpectrum. And who will take care of the software for the new Super? Are there really nuggets in the former Union who will create programs with the capabilities of MS Office or PageMaker
without a material base? Yes, this is just funny! Of course, the main incentives for creating a
SuperSpectrum are the reluctance to part with your favorite system and PRICE. But gentlemen who are financially strapped can purchase a used system with a 386DX processor, 4 meters of RAM, and a 200 screw for $200 -
$300. It may be more expensive than the planned Superspectrum, but there is a lot of software. And if you wish, you can run an emulator
and on your desktop your old favorite Spectrum.
Well, if the gentlemen who are cherishing the stillborn child - Super Spectrum,
hopeless retrogrades, out of the simplicity of their souls, wanting to compete with the PC
(which even Apple could not cope with, despite hundreds of billions
of dollars of annual turnover), then in the end they will find themselves with broken
trough, on which even the text is beautiful and it can’t be done.

P.S. From everything I have written, one should not conclude that I am an opponent of Spectrum. Not at all! Even now, I sometimes launch the emulator to
indulge in nostalgic memories. I just wanted to say that
everything has its time and systems that have outlived their useful life must give wayместо
системам новым.

So, let’s do the math. 6 years ago it was 1991. 'Dizzy 4. Magic Land' was released in December 1990, at the same time 'Dizzy 3.5.' appeared in Crash. Special Edition for
Crash'. At that time they couldn’t reach Russia in less than a year, so you didn’t see them. 'Dizzy 3. Fantastic World' came out in January (sort of) 1990. The same
same thing, although I admit that you could have seen it. 'Dizzy 2. Treasure Island' was released in 1989, you probably caught it. But the fact that you also called 'Cauldron'
(1985, like, Palace) suggests that you played all sorts of old games (by
today's standards. I'm not even talking about games like 'Star Inheritance' (STEP
1995), 'UFO. Enemy Unknown' (Copper Feet 1995), 'UFO 2. Terror from the Deep'
(Copper Feet 1996), 'Mortal Kombat' (Mafia, Code Busters 1997), 'Space Gun'
(Ocean, Taito, Images 1992), etc. you just didn't catch.

An interesting type of delusion! And if I say that the Spectrum is better than the PC in that the ZX user is bypassed by the happiness of endlessly throwing money down the drain in the implementation of an endless Upgrade! Any SPECCY user in 1990

“Correct” is an elastic concept! There is the following tendency among the people: a person sat on a ZX, coded a little for himself, for the soul, for his own development, and then bang, and PC, and on it he turned into an ordinary gamer (not all, but the majority)! Hello Starwalker!

S> But is it possible to compare games on Speccy and IBM? I mean
S> games from 1996
Each game is interesting primarily because of the idea embedded in it, and the graphics are
a candy wrapper. If the idea is weak, then the game gets lost very quickly and the graphics don't help. And there are a lot of interesting games on Speccy. There are also completely text-based games, and they still play them (at least Level 9 games).
Of course, they greet you by their clothes, but they see you off by their minds!
What is done on the PC in the C language, on the Speccy is done in assembly language and the difference
is obtained mainly only in the graphics (which is not available on the Spectrum change), yes
in money.

Hmmm... This is a difficult case. You need to get treatment...
Then the calculator turns out to be the coolest thing - having bought it in 76, you can upgrade it to 97 and count whatever you want on it!!!
These are the undeniable best aspects of the calculator...

And there is no need to start a flame like “ZX _BETTER_ pussies” !!! I myself also drove a Speckie and coded it too... The car is good. But it’s good in its weight category.
And comparing it with the PC is insanity...

And the ZX for the average user is DEAD... The foreign companies that fought
toys and EVERYTHING have disappeared... there is no more SPECKI for the average lamer... the skeleton of the
foreign toys remains, a bunch of demomakers and Copperlegs with their Black Raven...
So EVERYTHING IS ON PC...
1. PC is the most common composter (I don’t know here, but in the whole world
EXACTLY)
2. The PC has an open architecture. Upgrade it liketwo fingers on the asphalt...
3. On the PC _KHRENOVA_TUCHISCHHA_ software!!!

Draw your own conclusions... And don’t worry about foolishness - create superspectrums
that will be close in price to a pussy, but in fact will remain calculators
in comparison with it. I understand that some Spekkovites are enviously bitten in the ass
and they start a flame “PC is crap”, but think soberly - PC is still RULES and
a cooler car will not appear soon. We don’t take AMMI into account, because AMMI hasn’t spread yet...

I disagree with the last statement. SB plays cleanly if the program is good.
I agree about the gluttony. But a true connoisseur of PC sound (the humble I 8-D) will never buy SB 16 and other FM goodness. There is only one piece of advice - AWE32. It has hardware-implemented mixing, so it doesn't slow down, it plays all the mids like digitizations, without taking up (almost) CPU time. Moreover, it has become inexpensive lately, which is good news.

AL> And the GS sounds WITHOUT crackling, noise or squeaking. And it doesn’t waste time on the CPU.

GS is a very talentedly designed scheme, but it lacks mass appeal.
I haven’t seen it here in Ulyanovsk, and where is the software? I don't mean music, but games! And not just one or two, but a certain market. When all this is done, I will say that
GS
on Speccy is an analogue of AWE on PC. For now, this is just a development, a little
promoted, but nothing more.

From Tim Yunaev To All 16 June 1997

If you mean Chinese-Taiwanese models, of which the majority are around, then
this is so. For professional work, no hardware like SB is good for anything.
The minimum is Gravis Ultrasound (or professional cards like Yamaha, Roland - from $700 and
above)

AL> playing digital sound at 44 kHz eats up a lot of performance
AL> CPU,

It’s not a pity :)
All the latest games work on digitization, no special brakes are noticeable :)

AL> the operation of any SB is accompanied by hisses, high-frequency whistles,
AL>, etc. And the GS sounds WITHOUT crackling, noise or squeaking. And it doesn’t waste time on the CPU.

By the way, why wasn’t GS made like Gravis Ultrasound? That is, it (GU)
has memory on the board into which samples of AKA instruments are loaded and
commands are given such as to play such and such a note with such and such an instrument with such and such parameters
(something like Adlib in SB, which has taken little root due to its ugliness and
disgusting sound). The advantages are a sharp reduction in the size of the melody,
the ability to easily change instruments and virtually no load on the
processor.
Or did I miss everything again and this has already been done?

No, there is another sub for Starhawk and his friends! Even the weak-minded can prove that the PC is better than the Spectrum :)) But it’s weak to go to ru.amiga and prove there that their wretched stump-200 is better than even the simple A1200? :))

VM> Hmm, “a trend, however” (c) Chukchi - you’ll be third :))

hm.. what’s the hint? ;)

VM> It’s clear, the next “Month of Lamer” and other guests of the echo
VM> ZX-Spectrum has begun. :)

how can I tell you... I saw all sorts of changes in this echo... starting from
conversations with the propeller, cga, blaster and something else... some conversations did not go further than
conversations.

VM> Well, come in - every day we have an Open Day. Can
VM> pour out your soul on the topic “Why is my Pentium better than the Spectrum?” or “How
VM> make a tolerable computer for five spoons of crackers?”.

I consider this echo to be a semblance of...hmm...well, let's say old radio magazines or mk.
something from childhood and adolescence... it's nice to remember. this situation is similar for
amiga/komodor64/rk/.. you should have seen what happens when a former
Sinclairist and a Komodorian meet;))))) war is not for life and death.

VM> I, of course, can sell my beloved Pentagon-128 and buy 286yu with
VM> this money. But I just don’t understand why she gave up to me? :))

panimash... do you know how THIS happened in St. Petersburg ~4 years ago?
at first many bought XT! and began to sell off their 'remains'...
about 286 then some could not even dream of. I’m generally silent about the three-ruble note.
the new 386sx16 cost ~$100. and do you think it was mass insanity?
well, after a year or twoThe transition from Amiga to PC has begun. and what was bad on the Amiga
you still ask...

by the way, many who bought the Amiga then (from those who are now on the PC) read
this echo ;) but where are those Sinclairists who bought the Sinclairs from us... and God knows
knows ..
I remember the person who riveted controllers for the ZX gradually switched to the
PC platform. I also went through xt. so apparently it's worth something.

and as for 286... let's start with the fact that the screen on it is normal. as a result
it is suitable for communications. You can at least surf the Internet. and in a multitask ;)

well, if you add a little money, then you can run a turbo sinclair on it ;)

so you can see for yourself... the sinclair is now for a very limited contingent of
citizens (most likely for monetary reasons). most likely schoolchildren.

this is my imho.

ps
ktstat second imho. Sinclair will save now only two things - a more or less
standard monitor/terminal (resolution, I mean) and the ability to easily
connect a modem.
games and software for a long time without communication are not enough.

I know that this is _almost_ there. but this should be a _standard_ delivery
so to speak.

It’s better to stick it in your ass and run 220V through it ;-) You’ll get such a high-quality

VB> I roll up and I choke when Spectrum people hit themselves with their heels in

But you compare XT and Specky and tell me which is better??? Pipi at 3.5 MHz on CGA
scroll jumping at a frequency of 50fps will not be able to run. And if Specky had been overclocked to 100 MHz, then in terms of effects in the demos it would have surpassed any Pentium, and the Spectrum DUM would have worked on the entire screen at 50 fps, and there would still have been a ton of time left, for example, on the cool intelligence of the creatures. So there's no point in driving
Speccy.

also riveted them, for friends... with film-touch keyboards ;))

Amiga..., I then (more precisely 2 years earlier, in 90-91) was sleeping and saw a Yamaha

basic ;))) (and the sound was decent, and the percentage was Motorola). Just recently some

I have friends who bought specs for their kids... only those
kids really don’t care about spec, he has 2 cassettes - 3 floppy disks, he is happy...

Although a new generation of Spectrum fans is growing... That’s what I have on mine. /651

AJ> and about 286... let's start with the fact that the screen on it is normal. As a result

Well, the spec allows you to climb in Fido ???
And for the Internet, too. 486 is not enough... and it’s completely unnecessary with the spec in the and-no, the spec wasn’t
created for that... Although the sprinter-staer, this new one, may be able to pull it off...

AJ> well, if you add a little money, then you can run a turbo sinclair on it

AJ> so you can see for yourself... the sinclair is now well for a very limited

Quite right... taking into account the Russian economic situation, Spec is
a good solution for schoolchildren, and if this SuperSpec itself can also help
the child to be on friendly terms with MS (after all, they use MS in business), then he will only be
grateful later...

We need to somehow attract only the still growing youth to the network... otherwise
we’ll launch it and that’s it... How are things going with ftn-mailers for spec??? I would take
points...
