Promotion (second) of the Spectrum platform?!

From Andrew Savichev To All 22 March 1998

Hi, All!

What do the gentlemen of the Spectrumists think about SUBJ?
Can “Napoleon” ascend the throne for the second time after being exiled?
In other words, is it possible and, if possible, in what ways,
a new strengthening of the Spectrum?

With respect, Andrey Savichev/CGS

if of course the processor was compatible with the old Z80 processor yes
think right away about the video output, I think that if the spectrum

and the most important thing is that it would suit all circles of the population well, like

Someone said that the Z380 has a Z80 processor mode - if this is true, then that's
cool. If the specified resolution is (800x600x256c), then more
RAM, a larger screw, a fast video card, etc. will be required. - from here: unacceptable price -
from here: why the hell is all this fussing?
IMHO the success of Specky was (should have been) so huge because of the domestic
analogue parts and microcircuits used in it, as well as because of the simple
connection to a TV. So if we sculpt a more powerful Specky, it would be on the basis
of our microcircuits and certainly not use multilayer boards.
Can anyone tell me where you can buy this processor + manuals (in native language)
or here will tell you what it externally looks like, well, what color, size,
how many legs, etc.
And another question: if there is a processor. IMHO there must be a mother, does she exist?

With respect, Evgen.

You're kidding, a MAC (normal) costs about $4,000 + an idiotic monitor about $1,000, I don't know
maybe this price suits you, maybe you're a billionaire ;) But I and many people are not satisfied with this
price, despite all its coolness. And by the way, imho no one in the echo is on
MAC, everyone is on PC and a little on Speccy or am I mistaken?
And soft? If you're going to take a license, no, if you're a billionaire, then of course! :) In our market I have seen at most 2-3 discs for PC/MAC, the rest are only
4 PC :(

P.S.: I would really like a MAC! (dreams, dreams)
P.P.S: By the way, if you are a billionaire, then maybe you can still give me a MAC for my birthday? Well, what is 3-4 bucks for a billionaire. :)

Judging by the documentation and information on the ZILOG website, all of their processors are compatible with
Z80. Programs written for the Z80 will work on them (but not vice versa).

IMHO, in the form in which the Spectrum now exists (more precisely, in which it was
since 1982-86), it is probably already difficult to promote it, because They are too seducing potential users with all sorts of consoles, and those who are richer - PCs. In order for the Spectrum to be competitive now, it is necessary (and very necessary) to improve the graphics and sound (since this is usually what people pay attention to when evaluating a machine), but with improved graphics it is necessary to raise the clock speed. This is a way to raise the level of the Spectrum (from a children's car to a cheap home computer).
But in order to show these new Specky capabilities, we need
programs that use these same capabilities => programmers
need to work at full capacity. By the way, due to the increase in Specky's capabilities, the desired number of people in the team will increase. If now
one person can do a lot, then with the new capabilities he
will do the same amount, but in less time (this is in terms of drawing graphics,
writing music, as well as design). And since authors are also people and also want to eat (and not only eat), then they should receive something for their creations. And here we are again running into hackers, pirates and dishonest traders.
Somehow we need to get rid of them. It seems to me that by the time we gather
10 people here to order a branded CV, a hack will already arrive to us, which
canwill be free to write off. And here the natural human
sense of saving money will come into play:(
In general, I believe that promotion is possible, but it will not be easy to implement
it in practice. For my part, I say that our group will take
as much as possible in the promotion.

IMHO, unfortunately, it is impossible. :-( Impossible because with the death of
Inforkom the spektrumists were left without communication, without support. If we want to do something, then it needs a replacement. Secondly, we need to finally
settle the situation with the hardware. And then they talked here at one time about Sprinter - and
where is it? There was also such a GS here - where? There was such a KAY - who knows about it, except
Petersburg people? Etc. We need to finally establish distribution. Plus
the upgrade should be available on the periphery. I remember reading the ZX Review, and
they write tape loaders. Oh my God, it’s 1998!

Or maybe its price was small precisely because of this.
To ALL:
Now on the topic of the subject. Too often they began to argue about Specky, who should
remain himself and Sprinter, who is sophisticated (by the way, his
characteristics amazed and upset me at the same time, but I won’t criticize, someone honestly tried, put their soul into it, and this is just my opinion). It is possible to find a
compromise. Specky is cool because it is not the programs that dictate what hardware to install, but
HARDWARE that indicates how to make a program so that it works quickly!!! (somehow
tried to express my thought)
Well, now it’s worth deciding: why you love Specky and what your dreams
you want to see in him in the future. For example, I like it for its
compactness, connection to a TV, unforgettable (I still remember and play whenever possible) games, compatibility (sort of) with friends’ computers (before) and
MUSIC, which I heard for the first time on it.
Progress goes forward and the PC cannot catch up (the most important thing is that it is not necessary !!!).
We can make a platform that meets today's needsrequirements (our
requirements) !!!
By the way, I wonder who imagines the future Spectrum !!!
(Wild dreams, but still... )
This primarily concerns coders, what exactly do they need in order to outshine a similar program on
an unimaginable super processor on any other platform with interest
(this is what he is famous for) and entertainment ??? And also us, gamers
(well, not only gamers) - what exactly do we need, so that we calm down and
for the next 3-5 years we don’t whine about or without reason, but like crazy(!) we get
a thrill from some new game!!!

THESE ARE MY THOUGHTS (maybe a little naive) ABOUT THE SUBJECT!!!

P.S. Interesting to know your opinion!
P.S. Who would only know how much I want to play HEROQUEST !!!
And let everyone know that I don’t have it, but the game is RULEZ !!!

And not only in Moscow. When I upgraded my 286 mother to a 386DX40, two of my acquaintances took Amigas at about the same time (one switched it to 486, and the second left for Israel). At the same time, I bought a 210 MB Vinci for $120, and they bought a
170 (?) Mb Vinci for $135. After which there was a lot of controversy about the fact that the Amiga
needs special ones. screws, which are much cooler than PC screws (no one could explain why they were cool). The dispute ended when the owner, who was leaving and selling various junk
sold me this screw for $50 (the screw turned out to be an ordinary IDE screw - where do they include them?) and after repartitioning and formatting it worked absolutely
normally, like the other 170 SeaGate.
After that, all the questions about the “coolness” and differences in the screws disappeared by themselves, and

Quantity still does not mean quality. Yes, on the Mac there is less quantity,
but the quality is more important for companies that are professionally involved
and they don’t care about the price. It’s a different matter
small companies that don’t have money. In addition, the Mac has such a useful thing as a color management system, which is extremely useful
for printing. Pisyuk is resting here. And Adobe's programs
work more pleasantly on a Mac...

Despite all the shortcomings of MacOS, it is still more stable than
Windows, and, most importantly, much easier to work with.
And this is very important for “non-specialists” in the field of the system - a person
doesn’t have to waste time struggling with it!

As for the hardware: yes, the hardware changes, but here’s the architecture. then the PC remains the same - this is its bottleneck. The Mac, of course, has a more powerful architecture, and besides, PowerPCs have always been and will always be cooler than any Intel - this is logical.

From Victor Moskalyov To All 19 April 1998

No, I'm a realist. I know very well what MacOS, and Windows, and AmigaOS are.

Yes, of course, MacOS is the ideal system for lamers, and it is not surprising that
it is perhaps recognized as the best in the world. But as soon as a person comes out of the lame state, the slowness and “inflexibility” of MacOS begin to irritate. Plus the lack of multitasking...

And the transition to “pure” PowerPC on AMIGA is not so necessary.
The fact is that under AmigaOS both 68K applications
and PPC applications can be executed in parallel. The Amiga in this case functions as a
dual-processor system, where both PPC and 68K programs can simultaneously execute and exchange
data. All this became possible thanks to
the architecture and flexibility of AmigaOS
- by adding just one library to the system.

“Cooler” is an incorrect concept in circuit design. What exactly is “cooler” and what

UNIX is rulez, but not for lamers... It's much easier to teach a person
to work in Win or MacOS. It is unlikely that any company will want to spend
more time and money on training an employee to work in UNIX.

That's for sure! 100 points!!! That's why I'm on AMIGA :) But not all companies need deeper work with the system than MacOS provides...

VM> At least by performance,

What is it measured by? _real_ (not digital) performance?

VM> not to mention a more powerful and convenient command system,

Let the compiler deal with the command system - its developers
get paid for it. And by default, RISC has a dumber command system than CISC.

Where does the info come from? Especially about “similar performance” - how was

TY> For normal operation they install UNIX.

I don’t think that an ordinary person will get into UNIX very easily the first time.
It’s too difficult. Why do you think Windows NT is gaining momentum now?
Yes, because it is 1000 times easier to work with ;)

TY> But it was precisely the timely focus on the private sector of IBM, Intel,
TY> Microsoft and others that led to the fact that other platforms are sitting in
TY> deep ass, with the exception of some highly specialized

Yes, of course, WIntel now dominates the private sector, but only in it
;)
There are areas where WIntel is in the ass, for example, video production.

TY> But everything that was developed over 8 years on a Mac will be transferred to the PC in

I don’t think it’s all that simple.

You know, a certain skill, I think, is still needed. So in UNIX this
ability is not as easy to obtain as in MacOS, WIN, etc...

About the fact that inWith free software (Linux), someone will do such an expensive project - I doubt it. In any case, I think that WinNT will soon take away a large piece of the market from UNIX & Co simply because it is easier to work with than UNIX.

Из факу по Вавилону:

Subject: 5. What kind of Special Effects does Babylon 5 have?

All special effects for Babylon 5 are computer generated imagery (CGI).
Foundation Imaging, headed by Ron Thornton, is utilizing Lightwave 3D and
specialized software to design and render the visual effects. (Lightwave is
now running on PCs; Amigas were used originally.) Space scenes are clearer
and more realistic than Model shots. Some interior shots such as docking bays
are "virtual sets" combining live action with computer imagery. Macintoshes
and PCs are used occasionally for 2-D effects and painting packages.

Starting in season 4, Foundation is no longer be doing B5's effects. They
are done in-house using similar equipment to Foundation's, headed up by
co-producer George Johnsen.

I sit at LW 8 hours a day, on weekdays ;) and I see what is being done in LW
(and has been done), including rendering, fortunately I can create something myself, and
what is being done in MAX R2.5 are two big differences. in my office they recently made
a video called 'Persia', they just did it like that for no reason, but
I have never seen such high-quality graphics, and it was made in MAX R2.

so, to put it mildly, you are mistaken.

This is a problem for ZX.SPECTRUM :)))))))))
However, how very related to this business...
LW has built-in ray-trace rendering. Therefore, its render quality is really better compared to the built-in renderer in MAX2. However, there are as many rendering algorithms from third companies as possible! There's even RadioRay. And about him in a reputable magazine they wrote: “The render quality of radio rays is often higher than the quality of live photographs” \:=[ ]
