ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»
From Alex Mikhailov → To All 4 May 1997
A big greeting to you, dear Dmitry!
On a frosty day on April 30, 1997, at 13:15,
Dmitry Grigoriev wrote a letter to Alex Mikhailov:
DG> So I’m talking about the same thing... But why be upset? We
DG> work, not compete.
and we work. and we don't compete. maybe
just a little bit. and this is not some kind of dependent and vile struggle for no apparent reason, but this is normal, healthy sports passion. Some have more, some have less, some have none at all. but, IMHO, almost
any user of both your and our
network wants to see his network better
than the other, no matter how much he denies it.
and your answer is a living confirmation of this. :)
It’s just that Muscovites have already gotten used to the idea
that there is no better network than ZX-Net, and ours
have yet to be convinced that
SpbZxNet is not a backyard either... :)))
healthy competition has never harmed,
and my “statistics” were intended only to cheer up
our users after
the confusion that has reigned over the last two months in network -
SpbZxNet almost fell apart and
people were just a little tired.
this “statistics” was not at all aimed at
spitting in the direction of Moscow, insulting
and offending someone, roughly speaking, it was not intended
at all to get to Fido, but
since it got there, nothing terrible
happened - we just learned
a lot more new things aboutyour network.
VM>> y Muscovites only one server, where there is a
VM>> password (common for all clients). we have 15 of them, i.e.
VM>> at all stations...
DG> Which means that our network is much more friendly and
DG> open to users. That's why there are more of them.
but here I categorically disagree.
where did you get the idea that SpbZxNet is less friendly
for users than ZX-Net? By what
criteria did you evaluate “friendliness”?
and we have much more openness -
if you really want to, you can call bbs
through a telephone transic, but
you first need to buy CDOS... :))
at one time we sold a terminal - yes,
I agree, it was quite a hindrance.
but the software was worth it. besides, it's been free for two months already...
you're fast, however... :) you have more
users simply because the network has existed for more than 2
years, and individual bbs even
longer. besides, the CDOS modem, as
I understand, is very popular in Moscow, which
cannot be said about Vikommka in St. Petersburg. when
XTR-modem appears, then we'll see.
let's go somewhere at the end of October
let's return to this issue and see, ok?
otherwise summer is coming, and this will not have a positive impact at all
on the number of users.
VM>> and because of the primitiveness of the software,
DG> But you are completely in vain. Yours
DG> praise - don’t scold someone else.
this is a wise phrase, and I didn’t want to scold anyone.
but! see below
DG> If your
DG> software was better, we would use it.
I haven’t seen your software, because it never reached us :(, but at least I imagine
almost all its capabilities from your Charter and
from your letters. unfortunately, your
software is noticeably inferior to ours, and that’s a fact.
another thing is that it doesn’t work with CDOS,
maybe that's why you don't use it? :))
DG> Our software fully
DG> satisfies our needs.
You shouldn't be doing that. even where you concede,
you want to prove your superiority.
VM>> they cannot do
VM>> different levels of access for themselves.
DG> I don’t understand - does this speak about the coolness of the network?
DG> In my opinion, this only speaks about
DG> the “coolness” of the sysop ;-))
roughly speaking, this speaks about the coolness software :))))
though not only about that.
VM>> in Moscow
VM>> actually there is no echo,
DG> There are echoes, but they are not an end in themselves. We don't have an analogue of
DG> Fido - rather, an analogue of "bulletin boards" or BBS stations ;-)
IMHO, one of the factors for evaluating a network is the perfection
of the general correspondence system. by the way, if you want -
make a list of these factors, and then
compare both networks based on them now and somewhere
in October.
and I propose a systemrating because
some factors are more important, while others are less important.
for example:
1. Number of nodes 200%
2. Number of users 150%
3. Perfection of the general correspondence system 100%
4. Perfection of the private correspondence system 100%
5. Gate system with Fido 100%
6. Gate system with Internet 100%
7. Perfection of software 50%
8. Just like that :) 100%
SpbZxNet: 3+4+5+7+8=450%
ZX-Net: 1+2+6=450%
Friendship won!!! :). private correspondence, most likely
VM>> most likely, minimal
DG> It’s already becoming funny to read ;) Hundreds of kilobytes
DG> per day of letters and files.
no, well, I can’t imagine:
Problem:
Given: │ Solution (mine):
----- │
│ 2400 baud = 2400 bytes
bbs on ZX │ per minute
modem 2400 without protocols│
Sysop (still alive) │ 100.000/2400 = 42 minutes
Mail (100Kb per day) │ per day for forwarding
│ mail
Prove: │
--------- │
│
Is this possible? If yes, then: │ perhaps, perhaps...
│ but only I would die
1. How many hours a day does Sysop have │ in a week. or does
go to mail forwarding? │ More durable in Moscow
2. In how many days will the sysop die? │ Sysops? :)
│
And most importantly, how much time does it take for
the host and the gate, considering that they serve several
people? It would be fine if the exchange of mail occurred automatically at night, but as I understand it, you do everything manually. What do you mean, if a user wants to
send a toy to another user, he sends
it over the network? those. like a private letter? otherwise
where do “hundreds of kilobytes per day” come from
if there is almost no eh? Or maybe you and I have
different concepts of the words “sending files over the network”? :)))
or do you mean by “hundreds” of kilobytes all
mail that passes through gates and hosts?
well, we have two fidosh gates, together
they receive no less than a meter
of mail per day... only from Fido, notfrom
SpbZxNet... :) although, theoretically, all
this meter could be available to SpbZxNet points... :)
Best wishes, Arno from Omega group.

DG> LIME TREE, by the way, died a long time ago.
and we still read it... :))
VM>> by the way, our XA-XAFON is quite able
VM>> to compete even with OnLine,
DG> Well :( Compared to a humorous newspaper :( This is the first time this has happened to
DG> me... Interesting sensations...
:) - this is a joke, of course. Although in every joke there is
a grain of truth: my XA-XAFON bibisa pulls no
less than ON-LINE... :)
VM>> at least
VM>> in terms of interest (in my opinion).
DG> A-ah! That's the thing! Well... Who cares...
I agree. it was a joke, so don't take it to heart. On-line is still my
favorite newspaper... from Moscow... :)
VM>> although you shouldn’t compare the incomparable - OnLine is about
VM>> Speck, XA-XAFON - about humor.... :)
DG> It’s good that you see the difference.
you wouldn’t quote every phrase, but would appreciate the meaning
of the entire paragraph. then I wouldn’t be offended... :)
VM>> the most suck in St. Petersburg - ReadMe, in Moscow there was something
VM>> similar, even worse, but it quickly rotted
DG> It didn’t rot, in my opinion :(
they are tenacious, the bastards... :))
[skip about the sellers]
DG> In that case, let’s wait, as I said SN,
DG> a year - let's see where your "small" ones suddenly go...
hmm... they're not that small... :)
VM>> our traders are still trading, which means
VM>>It's still profitable, which means Speck hasn't died yet.
DG> So ours are still trading ;)
DG> And we haven't died yet ;) Only
DG> what does this have to do with networks? How did you
DG> draw such conclusions from network statistics?
uh... well, there was the phrase “and now from network affairs to market affairs.” Did I answer your question? ;)
VM>> now the software market: in Moscow no one does a damn thing,
VM>> except Styopa and Siamance. In St. Petersburg - you know... :)
DG> Ahh! It's clear. You have already “proven” that your network is “larger” -
DG> now you decided to prove that St. Petersburg is generally cooler than Moscow...
have you ever doubted this? :)
I - no...
DG> Well, well... Why is it so categorical -
DG> “nobody does a damn thing”? They do. And quite a few...
who and what? ;)
VM>> Hardware market - there’s nothing even to compare. y
VM>> us and Scorp, and Kay, and Peters, and in Moscow -
VM>> Pentagon-self-made-what-found-soldered :)
DG> Our Pentagon will give a hundred points of a head start to all your computers together
DG> taken by reliability ;-))
this is from that series: “an airplane is good, a steamship is good,
a deer is better!"? :)))
DG> Why did you forget about Pros, ATMs, GRMs?
DG> They are not produced, but are sold/bought.
there are too few of them... probably... I think it’s unlikely
Uncle Petya, who sells on the market even inthe most
white-stone (!) old Pros will compare
in sales with the same scorpionists. Am I wrong?
VM>> number of users: the devil knows, however
VM>> according to some data in Moscow there are still more of them,
DG> Hmm... It’s hard to dispute the obvious... 5 times more
DG> more, at least.
let’s still limit ourselves to the wording “the devil knows,”
okay? You and I didn’t count them, did we? ;)
VM>> but the ratio of Sinclairists/mere mortals is lower.
VM>> i.e. There are more Sinclairists than us per unit of population
VM>> :)
DG> Do you have accurate data on this? Especially in
DG> Moscow? Anyone can say something, who will prove it?
I agree. Let's go count tomorrow, okay? :)
VM>> well, people! Does anyone still have doubts
VM>> about the coolness of SpbZxNet and St. Petersburg? :)
DG> I still have some. Not in relation to coolness, but in coolness
DG> relative to ZXNet and Moscow ;-)
ok, if by the end of October I cannot convince
you otherwise, I will resign. is it coming? ;)
DG> In my opinion, such evidence
DG> of toughness begins when doubts arise about
DG> it...
I do not agree. it's not about coolness at all.
we just have to catch up, start from scratch.
and sometimes we have to compare - and this
is not at all due to a lack of “coolness”.
DG> Imagine,if I take it and out of the blue compare
DG> Online with ZXNews.
DG> Point by point. And no discounts.
For what?
DG> Will it be nice for you?
Well, if you admit that ZN is better, then yes :)))
I'm kidding, of course.
DG> That's why I don't compare ;)
like: "Why compare?" and looked at the patient so expressively... :)))
DG> You need to be more modest.
I agree. and always tried to do this.
DG> When SPbZXNet “beats” our network,
DG> believe me, it will be noticeable.
DG> And it won’t require proof.
DG> Don’t rush to wave statistics -
“statistics” is not at all due to a lack of
modesty, this is not an attempt to brag or anything like that. we just want to
make a good network...
and on this path it is simply necessary to compare,
to compare, and not to brag. and I
really regret that you weren’t thinking about
comparing two networks: one that
is in its infancy, and the other that
is firmly on its feet, but about some
boastful nonsense.
DG> you started smartly (using other people’s experience),
here you are wrong. we did not have any experience
and even now I believe that there is not so
a lot of it.
DG> but we also need to continue... But this already requires
DG> work, and not only
DG> dubious reliability of campaigning and premature
DG>shouts of "Hurray"...
thank you. Most of all I deserve
slop on my ears.
DG> So far I don’t see any desire on the part of SPbZXNet
DG> to expand its network, I see:
DG> commercial software,
good commercial software. but this is not the same thing.
besides, it was commercial... besides,
with the advent of new software versions, the old ones become
free. and if the user feels sorry for
10 tyr, well, he can use the
free and sometimes buggy “minimum”.
DG> commercial advertising in an online publication
DG> (was it justified? Maybe it’s time to cancel?),
I was late with the advice - it was already cancelled... :) and the advertising
was justified:
at least on the part of several "advertisers".
DG> reluctance to make
DG> the publication available to as many
DG> spektrumists as possible,
don’t understand? How is that? why?
DG> password-protected stations (unprecedented
DG> case - even any scribe with a modem has the right
DG> to use hundreds of BBS stations),
in-in... and such words after all that
we wrote in the news about the structure of our
network. and then you are also surprised that not all the data and conclusions in my
statistics are correct. Holy shit, the stations are not locked with a password! It's just that each person has his own password, his own access level. anyone
can call almost
any station.
DG>Let's see what happens next... I hope to work together
DG>, and not demonstrate "muscles" in front of each other...
I hope now you understand my position
on this issue.
DG> Sincerely, Dmitry (OLDMAN).

most likely it will be prohibited in the new Charter,
although this is still unknown: on the one hand,
this is logical from the point of view of the fidosh system,
and on the other hand, what the hell? after all, it is much more convenient
if a person wants to set up a station, so that
he first gets a node address, and then
starts issuing points to his users.

rather the opposite. I meant that if
people ALREADY know each other, then it’s easier to call
by phone than to write a letter,
another thing is that without it it’s more difficult to get to know each other.
DG> If it’s more convenient to call, they call, rather than

DG> Yeah. We carry it around like a handbag :-))
by the way, there is nothing
reprehensible about being proud of the Internet... :)
DG> And we offer it left and right.
So that’s great. only for other cities
it doesn’t make sense - it’s too long, it’s easier to find and make a gate on
the provider’s place...
VM>> but we will have this too soon, the system will be much more
VM>> automated and user-friendly.
DG> So... And we will have a lot of things... Soon, of course ;)
so we already have the Internet. I meant that soon it
will be at the same level as yours - not all at once. It’s just,
IMHO, people here are already accustomed to Fido - they take a long time
to swing... :)
VM>> They know about Fido mostly by hearsay,
DG> But you have a lot of conversations about her ;)
DG> Everyone knows everything, no one hides information from users.

VM>> at least they don’t write in the echo (except OldMana,

DG> There are other ZXNet users here and Fido at the same time,

in! "and Fido at the same time." and in our country the majority
do not have access to Fido, and those who have -
and onWhy did SpbZxNet give in to them? almost all of our echo
Petersburg fidoshniks can pour from fidosh
bbs'ok... ;)
DG> And what does my Pentium have to do with it? Should I write here about Specky?
no, well, if you have Pent, there is nothing wrong with that,
especially if the person hasn’t abandoned Speck.
but 99.99% of SpbZxNet users have
Spec, they write from it, including here...
DG> I am, of course, a fan of Spectrum, but not a fanatic ;-)
that means everyone in our network is a fanatic.
DG> something is not noticeable, by the way, there is no particular activity

they seem to have enough internal ones... :)
VM>> their mail forwarding system

I still don’t understand everything: “a pair of disks” comes,
but no one has seen a single letter from the ZX-Net gate in
Fido. how's that? :) Isn't the gate a hack??? :). Again,
DG> does not cause any particular difficulties, especially if you consider that the sysop gates, as well as the

here we go again... :( just general phrases, no
details. It looks like the structure of your
network is enmeshed in a deep mystery... :)
VM>> there are no internal ones at all.
DG> Yes... I'm already tired :( Alex, go to
DG> Moscow, and work for a couple of nights as a user.
DG> Then confirm what is and what is not.
here! I finally waited, otherwise I thought that you would never
invite... :) Dima, damn it,
I repeat once again that I didn’t want
to offend anyone, all my conclusions are absolutely
logical with point of view of the majority of St. Petersburg residents.
we know almost nothing about your network,
and the phrase “hundreds of kilobytes of mail per day” generally
doesn’t let me sleep peacefully at night. :)
well, I can’t imagine this - it’s not a matter of the number of users or nodes, but of the time that sysops spend “manually” on a 2400 modem. They’re not suicides, are they? :)
VM>> there are several newspapers,
DG> A few - that’s two or three, we have a lot of newspapers
DG>, about a dozen, if I’m not mistaken.
and we don’t need more
newspapers! about Speck - ZxNews, about humor -
XA-XAFON, "alternative" - ReadMe, and the rest - echoes
and local.
VM>>which in some way replace echoes, i.e.
VM>> if someone needs to contact Ally,
VM>> then he writes an article in one of the newspapers.
DG> You can do it this way ;) It can be simpler - by throwing a message at any
DG> station or at several.
but with us you throw it into the echo from one station and in
days it’s already on everyone. where is it easier? ;)
DG> in fidosh ones, for example,
DG> there are practically no solutions for games,
in spbzxnet's one, ask Alla: “how to beat such and such
game”, and they will answer you. and there is no need for any
solutions. Fido is mainly a nostalgic
emulator, so there are few descriptions here.
that's why we don't write much here. probably...
DG> no advertising
ehi, my friend, echo... :)
DG> and schedules of Moscow stations ;)
what, this is a thought... :)
DG> How can
DG> generally compare the information content of publications and conferences?
IMHO, it is possible, and how. echoes are much faster, publications reach a greater number of people. A living example: the news was published on Wednesday, and on Thursday the BBC closed for two weeks... so sysop writes to the echo, and it’s already on its trail. Almost no one calls every day, and if it weren’t for this, he would be tormented with calls right up to the next day. Wednesday!
DG> In the echo you can say without thinking - they will correct you if you are wrong
DG> :)
I agree. but the main thing in a newspaper is the speed of information.
for SpbZxNet users evenweekly
news is still a drag... :))))
DG> The publication must have at least some authenticity
DG> of what is published. After all, you wouldn’t dare to publish your
DG> “statistics” in ZXNews?
“didn’t dare” is not the right word. rude. I'm sorry, of course...
although the meaning is correct - I wouldn't do it publish.

AM> means everyone in our network is a fanatic.
If you read the previous two sentences, you will understand that not everyone, but only
those who have Pentiums, but they prefer to write letters in Isdos? :-))
Well, our people don’t want to write in echoes... Is the network to blame for this? I was interested,
they say, “why grind your tongue in vain” ;) But in my opinion, they don’t have Golded,
they can’t respond with one keystroke, otherwise many would have gotten involved long ago (like me - instead of doing business, I spend half a day answering
your letter, and this is not because I type slowly ;)
DG>> something is not noticeable, by the way, much user activity St. Petersburg
AM> they seem to have enough internal ones... :)
Oh, Lord! Yours have enough, but ours _shouldn't_ have enough?
AM> I still don’t understand everything: “a couple of disks” arrive, but no one has seen a single letter
AM> from the ZX-Net gate in Fido. how's that? :) Isn't
AM> a hack of the gate??? :). nodetails. it seems
AM> the structure of your network is enmeshed in a deep mystery... :)
What don’t you understand? A letter arrives to me, the header is formatted (if
you need to send via Fido), the body of the letter is formed (I just use a
clipboard or reading a file, since I rarely gate), the letter is sent.
This is what I do. Others may do it differently. What difference does it make if it all
works? Or is this back to the question of the coolness of the network? :-/
AM> here you go! finally waited, otherwise I thought that you would never invite me... :)
Come, have a look, share your experience :)
AM> and the phrase “hundreds of kilobytes of mail per day” generally
AM> does not let me sleep peacefully at night. :)
Well, I exaggerated a little, don’t worry :) Sleep well. But in 4 months
only through the gate zx...@deol.ru 12 megabytes passed. Divide this figure by 120.
Hmm... I didn't exaggerate that much... And this is only the external mail of one gate.
Should I send you invoices? :)
AM> well, I can’t imagine this
I already understood that;) But you can’t take my word for it? Don't you deserve it? ;)
AM> - it’s not about the number of users or nodes, but about the time that sysops
AM> spend “manually” on the 2400 modem. They’re not suicides, are they? :)
Your Sysops are lazy, I see :), or the routing is not optimal...
AM> and we don’t need morenewspapers!
How cool you said that ;) Are you sure that everyone thinks so?
AM> about Speck - ZxNews, about humor - XA-XAFON, “alternative” - ReadMe,
AM> and the rest is echoes and locals.
No comments... But it’s worth noting ;)
[further about the wonderfulness of oh and the uselessness of newspapers missing...]

DG>> And there you are completely in vain. Praise your own, don’t scold someone else’s.
AM> this is a wise phrase, and I didn’t want to scold anyone.
Yes? :) You are lucky that the author of this software is far from our dispute ;-)
(Or maybe not so far?)
AM> I haven’t seen your software, because it never reached us :(,
I sent it to you back in early February. And your gate
at my request confirmed delivery...
AM> another thing is that it doesn’t work with CDOS,
AM> maybe that’s why you didn’t do you use it? :))
You didn’t seem to mind changing it :) I don’t think it would take much time, another question is how it would work on our lines with such a
protocol...
DG>> Our software fully satisfies our needs.
AM> you’re in vain. even where you concede,
AM> you want to prove your superiority.
Do you really need us to concede in something? ;)
Okay. I asked for it...
What we have:
Number dialing, auto-redial, auto-restoration of communication in case of a break.
Directory for 960 numbers with dialing through it.
Pick up the handset, including the desired call.
Dynamic adaptive speed change.
Mode (protocol?) turbo2 (there, in my opinion, there are no start/stop bits
-calculate the real cps at 2400 baud yourself) - justifies it if there is a good connection.
QUICK mode (off-line) - first the file names for reception/transmission are entered,
then the connection occurs without reading directories, etc. procedures.
Log maintenance.
Window interface (it’s convenient, you know, to download a directory, mark files
in it and merge them. Then do the same with the contents of your disk (which not everyone does
unfortunately :) Therefore, there are no macros, extension
mods, etc. - everything is in the menus and everything is clear.
Server turn-on timer.
Password access (just access - the user's password is searched and, depending on
the search results, the user is allowed or chased :)
Viewing texts.
Secret files (can be uploaded, cannot be leaked).
48k is enough.
Which is definitely not there, unlike your software:
There is no chat, and there is no point in it in Moscow without correction protocols...
No maybe our server will automatically give the point his mail :(
No access levels.
Inscriptions "SPbZXNet - RuLeZz" when connecting :-)
If all of the above is primitive...
But in general, now it’s your turn... Visually, I didn’t see anything stunning,
and I couldn’t see your terminal at work (probably I didn’t find a transformer
?), your document is too short...
AM> IMHO, one of the factors for evaluating a network is the perfection
AM> of the general correspondence system.
I know cases whenmail from me did not reach you, do you have such a compra on us? :) Do you send files? What about intercity? In particular, why
did you send me your terminal by regular mail? - In your opinion, is this the perfection of the system? By the way, how could I send you ours - at least people would look
(I won’t go to the post office - and don’t ask ;)
AM> by the way, if you want, make a list of these factors, and then
AM> we’ll compare both networks based on them now and somewhere in October.
I don’t have such a desire. I'm not going to compare anything else.
[another portion of comparisons has been missed...]
I won't say anything about priorities... But why did you deprive our network of the gate system with
Fido? You still have to prove the perfection of your software...
AM> Friendship has won!!! :). not even five months,
AM> can already “oppose” something to the “network with experience” -
AM> says that St. Petersburg is not the backyard of the universe :)
Not the backyard - relax. Moscow - the outskirts of the universe :-/

Big greetings to you, dear Vyacheslav!

Vyacheslav Mednonogov wrote a letter to Alex Mikhailov:
VM> I have no doubt! Although for a transformer in a box
VM> they were quite expensive :)
here will be XTR... :) 60 tyr in total.
VM> It’s a shame, of course, that the base modem for Spb.ZxNet became
VM> ViComm, and not hayes :((
it’s a shame, but there’s nothing to be done... :(
1. they don’t want to do anything with Misha’s circuit there are too many
modems to work...
2. 2400 still need to be looked for to make it work...
I searched for 3 months, rejected 10 Hayes...
3. so why SpbZxNet, if on Hayes? :)
straight to Fido.
VM> After all, all the prerequisites were there -
VM> a successful experience M. Kondratyev,
not entirely successful (see above), besides, only the experience -
the terminal in IS-DOS leaves much to be desired... :(((
I just had to “sit” on Misha in time :)))
VM> the appearance of SMUC with an ISA slot.
the software will be written soon, then yes, when
SpbZxNet was started, There was no SMUC. Many
sinklers don’t have the money for SMUC + Hayes,
but it’s easy to pick up a transic!
VM> It seems like you’re not on Vicom either ;)
and I have almost three modems... :)
