Demo Demons: The UK Brat Attack vs. the Euro-Bad Haircuts
Being a demo coder is not a simple case of being a wizard of ingenious Z80 m/c. What the 'best kid in maths at school' can't be taught is how to be cool - you've either got it or you havn't. It's having an eye for balance and construction of your graphics, the design of the fonts, the content of the scroller and the 'feel' of the sound. You can't define 'cool' and some of us have various definitions of it anyhow!
I've seen hundreds of demos from all over Europe, but it wasn't until I loaded up some stuff by Brit coders EXTACY-3 that I realised just how naff most european scrolling text had been. E3's text was witty, cutting and full of the street cred cool that had been curious by its absence. Don't get me wrong - I'm the first to tip my hat to the likes of the MAD GUYS who have over the years made me go 'WOW' more times than I care to mention. But what they never had was the young, cocky, in-your-face attitude that EXTACY 3 have. This group of clean-cut 17 year old herberts have taken the Speccy demo scene by the scruff of the neck and giving it a fucking good kicking!
Eleven demos have already been released with number twelve, INNER UNIVERSE, straining at the leash. What's more, the dummy issue of SUBLIMINAL EXTACY, a machine code driven, tasfile forum style diskzine, already shows great style and drive. Get their demos and see just what a street-cred UK outfit are doing with your speccy! You won't regret it.
And it doesn't stop there... the Scottish crew UNITED MINDS are releasing title after title containing more of what the euros havn't got a clue about - street style. Maybe I've just been pushed out of too many queues by some fat German wearing crap clothes... I've met too many Polish blokes who think having a moustache is 'fashionable'. It took a while for the UK crews to take on the euros but it's starting to happen. This competition will be great for the Speccy PD scene - a bit of aggro, that's what it needs!
Bringing up the rear of the Brit-Brat attack we've got the Hardcore-breakbeat soundtracking of the KNUCKLE GIRLS and SC's own FUDGEPACKER, pushing Speccy music into the jungle and industrial techno... You euro lot better get your shit together and drop this arse licking of pop stars like the Pet Shop Boys sound and drag yourself into the 1990's. You're already miles behind.
There are several other UK crews out there but due to not having received any latest stuff I thought it best not to pre-suppose you are coming from the same direction. So all Brit crews write to us and let's kick those hideous multi-coloured anoraks off a few tourists backs.
