ZX Spectrum Video Modes and Graphics Hardware Expansions

This section is dedicated to hardware-based methods of extending the graphics capabilities of the ZX Spectrum and its many compatible clones. It contains articles covering alternative video modes, increased screen resolutions, expanded color palettes, hardware multicolor techniques, and the development of advanced graphics subsystems for the platform.

The collection explores a wide range of graphical enhancements, from simple modifications designed to overcome the color limitations of the standard display to sophisticated video controller and graphics accelerator projects. Featured technologies include Flash Color, Gigascreen, Multicolor, Megascreen, New Bright, and other methods for increasing the number of simultaneously displayed colors and improving color resolution.

A significant portion of the material focuses on high-resolution display modes, including various implementations of 384×304, 512×192, and other experimental graphics modes. Both software-based rendering techniques and hardware modifications required to support these modes are discussed in detail.

The section also includes analytical articles on the evolution of Spectrum graphics hardware, reviews of existing modifications, studies of ZX Spectrum color palettes in different display modes, and conceptual designs for future video controllers. Special attention is given to projects such as GMX, General Vision, Sprinter, ATM-Turbo, and other developments that expanded the graphical capabilities of the classic ZX Spectrum architecture.

Additional topics include hardware multicolor implementations, GENLOCK technology, video signal generation, display subsystem design, and techniques for overcoming the limitations of the original Spectrum video hardware. Many articles provide circuit diagrams, practical implementation notes, and experimental results from developers and hardware enthusiasts.

Together, these materials document the long-standing efforts of the ZX Spectrum community to push beyond the graphical limitations of the original machine while preserving compatibility with the classic platform.
