  -= NeOS: a new operating system =

  In Russia, Ukraine and Belarus spektrumisty use only two disk
OS - a TR-DOS, which, in essence, is the emulation of a tape 
recorder, and iS-DOS - already professional system, but due to 
a number major flaws, it could not compete with the old 
"hole-dos." 


  It is therefore quite explain the increased interest in 
editorial ZXNews to new development Russian programmers from 
Yoshkar-Ola - OS NeOS. For more details, we turned to one of 
the authors of the OS - Roman Petrov (Megus), who kindly

answered our questions.

ZXN: Tell me please, why is this operating system?

Megus: OS is intended primarily
for authors of complex system software.
It is also one of the purposes of writing system is to 
alleviate the problems of incompatibility different models of 
Spectrum Management memory, various peripherals

(Such as mouse, printer, CMOS, modem,
AT-keyboard) by standardizing treatment to them by the drivers 
and system functions. Also, in the long term costs based 
implementation NeOS multitasking system. 

ZXN: And what it has advantages over
TR-DOS and iS-DOS?

Megus: Advantages TR-DOS'om: NeOS
- A complete disk system, not
simply replacing the tape features disc. Implemented a system 
of sequential access to the file (available in all major 
operating systems, including including iS-DOS). It is also 
possible (if the appropriate driver) support RAM-drive, HDD, 
CD-ROM, as well as other disk devices.



  Advantages over the iS-DOS'om: NeOS placed in ROM, so that 
does not require much location in RAM. The only thing to NeOS in

low memory - it is about 700 bytes of system operation and 2 kb 
in the upper memory (1 Kb - memory card can be filled

not entirely, the rest - the workspace
shell).


  Also, a significant advantage of the new OS
to TR-DOS and iS-DOS - Disk multisystem NeOS. That is 
absolutely possible without any restrictions to work with disks 
of different systems: TR-DOS, MS-DOS, iS-DOS. In this case, 
when changing the drive system itself determines the membership 
drive and user does not notice that he is working with 
different systems. Also in NeOS optional support file names up 
to 16 characters (this is still only possible in

MS-DOS, but not on standard Windows).

ZXN: What programs will be adapted to
NeOS?

Megus: There is agreement with the association of X-Project on 
Adaptation of them program on Wednesday NeOS: Melon, Alasm, STS.

Also received permission from the authors on
adaptation of the ZX-Asm v3.0. In the future we
going to agree with the authors of other
known and useful programs. All of them will be freely available 
to complete NeOS (installer, detailed documentation for users 
and programmers, library of drivers, basic software suite).


ZXN: And how will spread NeOS?

Megus: At this point I still thought
that the first version of the system is better to distribute 
freely. But if anyone wants to become a registered user NeOS, 
he can send us some money. Registered users will we be informed 
promptly about new versions of the system and new software for 
her.
