ZX Windows

Gentlemen programmers,
has no one ever thought of making a system similar to Windows for ZX?
We have already seen something similar to MS-DOS (IS-DOS), but now it would be nice to see
Windows. :-)
Jokes aside, I understand that with Spectrum resources it seems to me impossible to make a multitasking graphic system without using hardware accelerators. But maybe it’s worth a try?

Something like this was done by the Omen Corp group. it was completed, with a pretty good interface, but it was most likely similar to Amiga's WB than to WIN. Several programs should be released soon using this
interface.

As for multitasking - well, try it, try it! G)))))))

That would be very interesting to look at!
By the way, what kind of Omen Corp. is this? ? Where are they from?

DA> As for multitasking - well, try it, try it! F)))))))
Yes, I won’t try, because... :
1. I haven’t worked for Speccy for 1.5 years;
2. I wouldn’t have enough brains. :-) If you asked Rst7, he would do it.

Yes, and there would be more memory, although I think that if desired, 128k would be enough
at least. And it would be necessary to increase the speed of the ZX, otherwise the tasks will slow down terribly.

From Skayer To All 13 March 1997

Quasi-multi-tasking, like small soft windows. Third. :)

It will work in 48th. Well, the brakes... Gee-gee.

I wish I could find a good emulator for the pussy - otherwise I got fucked at Gutnikovsky
. No one will show you?
Well, that’s all, it seems. All the best!

And you write to Alexey Alexxev... 2:5030/529.8
He already had something done, and everything worked, options were selected (the exit from
the program was definitely created ;) ) And not only lines were selected, but also other features
(I don’t know how it was name...) It was controlled by buttons, joysticks and a Kempston mouse.
Moreover, the window system was sufficiently developed (it is, in principle, still like this now),
but only troubles, but ZX now it doesn’t write (doesn’t write at all (almost))

And having left you for my place, I wish you success...

Of course, you can install an interrupt controller, and there will be more of them.
And at the same time a DMA and a CMOS timer. But it won’t be quite a Spectrum... It’s better to immediately switch to a “cooler” computer...

Okay, let's not talk about offtopic... Spectrum can also be turned into something similar, of course, but what then will remain of its simplicity and as a result of its cheapness and understandability?

Well, I think that little will come of multitasking. But making a graphical environment is a real task and, I think, not superfluous. Something a la GUI.

NM> Regarding icons - for an icon to look good on the Spectrum, it

24x24 is just right, IMHO.

NM> icons This is not good - there is little information on the screen,

It depends on how many icons there are... And how they are located...

NM> therefore, access to it becomes more complicated. In addition, the icons must be
NM> signed and not in small letters (on a TV, a letter 5 dots high
NM> is difficult to see).

If you think about it correctly, you don’t have to sign it. As if it is not clear what a
magnifying glass or a capital letter A is...

NM> From this it follows that icons are nothing more than an auxiliary part of the
NM> interface and their “reproduction” is strictly limited, the basis being
NM> text names. For example, in Artstudio there are no icons at all, there are no items in

Artstudio, the latest one I’ve seen, was written in 1986 - it’s already 11 years ago.

NM> there are a lot of menus (if you replace them with icons, they will take up half the screen),

If, again, they are positioned correctly, everything will be ok. And if you make 64x64 icons on ok and
cancel - then of course half the screen.

NM> functionality is very good.

Welcome press, Spectrum progress - also not bad (I’m not talking about Pinkfloyd,it really took three years to think about this).

NM> The closest thing to this is the interface of Peter Cook & DCU & ArtStudio &
NM> ZX-Format shell, all that remains is to add window dragging.

But why is this? For fun, they usually insert a miner.

NM> and, of course, a mouse.

This can even be done in Tetris. And it is already everywhere. (Except Tetris)

As far as I know, there is already a mouse for ZX, but about the hard drive... What if
this system was made for computers with 512k memory and higher? Then when loading into the RAM, the basic API functions and drivers will be loaded from the floppy disk once, and then the system will work independently of the disk, because everything is already will
be loaded?
