ZX + CD-ROM = CD-Player

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Sergey Kulbashniy To All 7 March 1997

Hello All.

Did the dear All try to pair the ZX with the CD-ROM drive?
Of course, not in terms of reading programs, but at least to control the drive,
as an AudioCD player. They connect the hard drives (alive, though I’ve never seen them). That is, if I understand correctly, the IDE bus is implemented there?
If I'm wrong, please don't hit me too hard. And, in general, maybe someone knows how CD-ROM drives cope with playing audio CDs in terms of sound quality. Does the speed of the CD-ROM (2, 4, etc.) affect this quality?

All the best, Sergey.

I had it on a ZX, but connected only to power :) You need to take it with
buttons, and there are no problems. And speed as such does not affect the quality.
Only the quality of the ciderome itself.

I don’t know, I haven’t seen it live either, but as far as I’ve heard: that it’s not IDE, but
MFM hard drives that are cut off, but CD-ROM, it seems like you can’t hang it on MFM? Or am I wrong?

SK> CD-ROM drives with playback of audio CDs in terms of

The speed does not affect the quality in any way, since it is still possible to play digitally
at 1-speed, and in general the names 2-speed, 3-speed, 4-speed, 6-speed, and etc.
we went from the speed of AUDIO-CD!!!

ArtVision, Nick Ushakov.

MFM has been connected for a long time (well, about five years, exactly, since I heard about the connected
MFM), since its interface is very close to the disk drive - the same cable as
to the drive, plus another narrow cable.

Currently they connect IDE (for example, Profi, ATM, Scorpion). Connected to Profi IDE
in 1993-1994.

Slavunchik! CD-ROM has an audio output at the back... :)

Good Luck...

I haven’t tried it, but I had thoughts on the topic. It is possible to connect, because for a machine a CD-ROM
and a hard drive are absolutely no different. What kind of car do you have? If it's Profi, then I can still help with information - I'll give you a complete list of port addresses of additional
devices. And as far as I know, you can play music at least on 1-speed.

Just so you know, my friend, the CD-ROM plays everything itself. He just needs to give a command, and that's it.

VM> IMHO, even if there is someone to play it, then the Spectrum
VM> IDE controller will not be able to handle the speed of 150 kb/sec :(

There is no need to handle anything. You just need to stuff one single
byte into the command register, and everything.

It was great! What about Profi, what about Scorpion, what about ATM? IDEs have been there all my life...

Poor compared to normal CD-players

Audio is generally at 1st speed, those 150kB/sec, so no, it doesn’t affect

Now I will fight for justice.
One byte in the command register, 12 bytes in the register data.
And in general, I have an ATAPI Working draft here.

You can do it even simpler! You buy a CD-ROM with a PLAY
button on the face, connect it to the power supply from the Sinclair (only the
power supply will have to be made more powerful), insert it into the same case with the
Spectrum, the sound is output to the active speakers, press the
PLAY button and that’s it! Your Sinclair is playing music! There is only one thing - the sinclep
can be disconnected from the power supply or thrown out altogether! CD-ROM
will play just fine! :)

Initially it was a 48 KB Zonovsky ZX. We called it the "Leningrad" version. Currently it has been updated to 128 KB, a floppy drive controller on VG93 is connected, and music. coprocessor AY8910 if I haven't forgotten (it was a long time ago). Maybe you know, or dear All will tell you what it takes to get an IDE bus with all this, and whether it’s worth doing this at all. How is the IDE made in Profi?

All the best, Sergey.

I heard that our company, I think Slot, made an IDE controller. Fits
any car. And now, as far as I understand, the Scorpio
controller is being distributed. This information is highly inaccurate. I would like All to clarify
the situation.

SK> How is the IDE made in Profi?

Elementary. 4 mikruhi plus a base address decoder. But the ports there
turn out to be oh so bad... Kempston mouse, CDOS modem and GS can no longer be suspended without modification. The ATM turbo is much better done from this point of view, and the circuit is the same. In general, you shouldn't hook it up, because TR-DOS doesn't support it. Now, if I make my own OS, then it will be clear which controller
to attach... It will support it.
