Z380
ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»
From Roman Petrov → To All 16 March 1998
Hello! Dear All!
Maybe the all-knowing All knows what kind of beast this is - the Z380. Information
is needed more than the fact that it is 32-bit (it seems). I would like to know
at what clock frequencies it can operate, its capabilities (new commands
relative to the Z80). And finally, the most important thing - is it possible to create a Spectrum
based on the Z380?
With respect, Roman aka Megus of Brain Wave corp.

The Z380 is a sixteen-bit processor. The address bus is 32-bit. For all
documented and some undocumented (half index registers)
commands it is compatible with the Z80. It has many additional commands for working with sixteen-bit registers. Sixteen-bit arithmetic operations,
block transfers, multiplication/division, sixteen-bit input/output..
There is a proprietary ZILOG book in English, where all this is described.
At taco frequencies (from those that I saw on sale) up to 16 MHz.
I suppose the creation of Spectrum on Z380 it is possible. And, quite possibly, Sprinter-2
will be based on it.

yes, a lot. 4 sets of alternative registers (all registers are 32-bit

everything is possible, but many programs will not work due to
the use of undocumented features.

In the fall-winter of 1996/97. (that is, a little over a year ago)
Nicron published a whole series of articles about subj. The architecture, electrical parameters and
command system of the new processor were described in detail in Russian. The series of articles continued in more than twenty issues of the newspaper - from the 6th to the 27th, if I'm not mistaken. People, if you can’t raise these Nicron numbers, write to me; We’ll figure out something to do (for example, it won’t be difficult for me to make clippings from all these issues, make a
selection. But how to send it out? - It’s a pretty big volume...).
Suggest options.
With respect -
Vladimir.

As you said in a letter to Ivan Mak, the Z380 has a Z80 mode. Isn't this mode completely compatible with the native Z80? And as for undocumented commands
this is already clear - where else can the command system be expanded? By the way, I heard that the Z380 has commands for multiplying and dividing registers? Correct
if anything is wrong.

well, it’s not original, it’s original in Africa, and if you compare it by demos
then all non-pentagons are completely crooked.
