Still Sprinter...and others!
ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»
From Andrew Savichev → To All 19 January 1998
Hi, All!
Hello, Ivan & Dmitry!
>
> IM> We provide _choice_.
> IM> You can buy a Sprinter, or you can buy additional parts and build up a Scorpion.
The most reasonable thing, of course, is to have both ;), but alas... damned piastres.
Even last summer I wrote in the echo on regarding this situation...Sprinter does not
assume that you throw away other Spectrums...especially if you
have a Minitower case with peripherals (by the way, I hope both Sprinter and Scorpio are normally attached to it?)
I can say one thing to Scorpio adherents... this is not a dead end!...GMX is only
the first sign... rest assured that the appearance of Sprinter will only intensify
the desire to do "cool video"! :)
The hardest thing is for those who, without having a “natural” Spectrum, would like to buy it and
now stand at a crossroads.;)
The Sprinter cannot yet outweigh!!! but buying a Scorpio now is also somehow
... there is no feeling that when buying it you will be 100% right, like six months
ago.
In general, the Scorpio is reliable, proven, gradually expanding Spectrum...
I have three “hooks”:
1) who will connect the first SVGA monitor, well, not with SVGA modes, they are on the Spectrum
no one cares needed, but simply physically, through its “native cord with
connector”?
2) who will connect the CD-ROM, but on the contrary, not physically, but howlogical
device?
3) who will the softmakers support in practice and not in words?
>
DG>Another division of the spektrumists. Another standard. There were sipemniks,
DG>scorpionists and simple spektrumists, now sprinters will be added.
DG>No one will traditionally do “cross-platform” things. Everyone will sit
DG>on their own software, with their own pieces of hardware that are incompatible with each other.
Here it seems that Sprinter does not reject other branches, on the contrary, it is too actively
trying to absorb them into itself, but this is unlikely to succeed ;)
The logical response of other hard makers will now be to do EVERYTHING in order to
not have 100% compatibility :(
DG>All this is wonderful and even beautiful, but my statement about the need to change
DG>the entire fleet of existing machines for the spread of the Sprinter remains
DG>fair.
But this cannot be allowed! mercilessly get rid
of slowdown graphics modes, all that remains should be harmoniously
combined with the capabilities of the 21 MHz 8p z80!
Or power up the processor by slightly expanding its set of instructions and increasing
the performance to 10-20 mips!
Then it will be “at the level”386SX-40" and is quite suitable for educational
institutions (with SVGA and CDROM connected)
> IM> It all came down to the fact that you need good and fast graphics. That's exactly
> IM> that's what we did.
IMHO we followed the lead of the Amish people! :) With graphics larger than 256x192x16 Spectrum
"loses its face". You can accelerate graphics and other features, attach the most advanced sounds, install the most modern printers and media, but in no case should you touch the "face"! Otherwise it ceases to be Spectrum.
For a text screen (and ZX-Windows) a higher
resolution may be required, of course. and for modern toys - too.
But not at the expense of slowdown and increase in price!
A “bloated” screen -> this is a “bloated” code -> this is a blow to cheap modems,
to networks in general, and to floppy disks too.
And if the CDROM is not properly connected -> this is generally a blow to the existing
information exchange system.
What I really liked was the desire to make the new one more efficient effective
disk operating system.
But again, won’t this, along with screens that are greatly “swollen” in capacity, lead to a “sense of permissiveness”, will coders stop “counting bytes”?
And thank you very much for the description, we can hope that in its new edition
there will bea description of the control registers has already been given.
Sincerely, Andrey Savichev / CGS

already now a sprinter costs as much as a three-ruble ruble, and if it is further
strengthened, then it will cost much more, and no one will put it in an institution
. You know why.

, what does the Amizhniki have to do with it? Amizhniki do not approve of this.

this must be done separately, and not for one computer, but for everyone. Although
this is also too late...

Good Luck...

The Sprinter board is designed specifically for installation in a Mini-Tower. That is, the mounting
holes in the right places, the keyboard connector is opposite the hole, the slots are where

Why? The Spectrum will remain itself as long as there is compatibility.
IMHO we need at least a mode with each point a different color. Of course, this is a double-edged sword - by improving the characteristics of the screen, we increase its memory capacity, and therefore slow down the work with it. I think the first thing
you can do is change the screen layout to a simpler one. Let's say that the lines just follow in a row, without tricky alternations. The second thing
may be needed is really some kind of graphics coprocessor.
Imho it should be possible to update the screen in one interruption,
since in this case we will be able to run full
animations on it. If we are thinking of working in the WWW, then we cannot do without at least 256 colors, as well as a hardware JPEG decompressor. By the way, it is possible to work there with a resolution
less than 640x480, but somehow, to put it mildly, it’s not the same... So
it’s possible and necessary to improve the capabilities, but you have to do it with your head.
So far, with a pack of viches, Pavel Fedin.

There is a question about MSX.
We need complete information on hardware.
Whoever has what, send it to me, Plz.

The Peters company has already done a similar thing on Spectrums for schools. The idea will not
be lost.

Correct. I wrote here FLI player. First I figured out the format on IBM,
then I wrote under Sprinter.
When I figured it out on IBM, I couldn’t understand for a long time why my FLI player (on
IBM!) is twenty-five times shorter than the same thing written by someone else.

The whole trick of alternating lines is that a line of pixels in one line has a length
1024 bytes, and not 320.
To calculate the vertical position of a point, you don’t need to multiply by 320.
The whole screen 1024x256 pixels (1024x512), from which rectangles are cut out and
thrown onto the screen.
