Sprinter and "virtual" Spectrum (2Alex & Marat)

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Andrew Savichev To All 22 January 1998

Hi All!
Greetings to you, Alex & Marat!

I allowed myself to change Subj, because your argument is essentially about this ;)
Discussions on “damned” issues arise periodically here, and since
I thought a lot about them and even had a heated correspondence with the “inveterate, terry”
pisishnik from Pentium-133 (in the not so distant past, a Spectrumist)
from Togliatti, then I hasten to share with my dear All my thoughts on this matter. I’ll immediately make a reservation that since such a discussion goes into flame
easily and naturally, I will not support it with other letters on this topic.
The dispute is essentially meaningless!
This man from Tolyatti could not understand at all why he should run
emulsion on the Pentium. (Deeply sick of advertising and prevailing ideas in
society).
But I could not understand him;) But can, say, a Christian
and a Muslim understand each other? ;) and I’m not even talking about - a believer and an atheist?
It’s best to admit that the choice of a computer platform is as individual
a choice as the choice of a beloved girl or, say, the gastronomic preferences of
everyone.
Ask me why I’m a spektrumist? And I won’t be able to clearly explain
this to you.
That’s why people prefer pussy, I’ll explain to you (although this is already clear to everyone)
and it’s unlikely that any of you will disagree with me. But because it’s money!
If tomorrowsome "X - 111" will appear and all our bureaucrats and bureaucrats will put it on their desks after the President, and will transfer all office work, training, networks and so on to it, then all today's pisishniks will spit on their pisishniks and throw them in the trash (well, not all of them, of course, this is an exaggeration, but 90% of them are for sure ).
What else can you expect from a country where everyone, on command from above, sows first grass,
then corn, and many, many years later they pick up tennis rackets and, at the
whistle, unanimously change from Audio and Mercedes to Volga? ;)
So, apparently, my anarchism manifests itself in working for the Spectrum,
sitting on a pussy :)
Now let's move on to Subj.
Of course, it is incorrect to compare the Spectrum with pussy: neither with a stump, nor with other
computers.
Can you put together at least a two for yourself?
You can buy anything except stump-133 (166) and higher, now, in the company?
How many places can you repair all these pieces of hardware?
Can you understand, at least approximately, how all these monsters work?
Can you buy licensed software for writing?
Are you able to write something that is not funny (and pathetic) by today’s standards
would look like writing (not talking about using tools
like VISUAL and all sorts of other monsters).
Yes, you can “ride elephants”, or “be a moron ona starship crammed with high
technologies."
You like this role, in which case GO TO PC!
And there is no need for us to compost our brains here!
>
>These are rather not requirements for text processors, but requirements for desktop
publishing systems, and this is probably not difficult to notice.
Publishing systems are also possible on the Spectrum. There is one big
problem: speed working with graphics. And this problem is solved on
Sprinter, virtual Spectrum and on Scorpio (and on Pentagon-128 we hope it will be solved soon :) )
>
> MF>: But PostScript printers have become a thing of the past.
Well, why do many inkjet and laser printers support it, and very soon others? You won’t be able to buy printers, they will just disappear and that’s it! ;)
AL>Normal programs (there are probably such on PC? :-))), when choosing printing in a
AL>graph file, or direct output to a printer that does not support PostScript, do not
AL>use PostScript. Why is it necessary to generate it and then waste time
AL>on emulation?
The more choice options, the better. :)
This is the law of life: the maker is hard work until he gets bloody calluses, the user is joy, lafa and
freedom :)
>
> MF> Well, let's see... The 486th PC already knew how to do all this, but we will consider
> MF> Such a machine in our time.it will cost you about
> MF> $350-$450, I think. With a monitor. How far is it from Sprintera? Well, here you go.
You still have to manage to buy all this now, unless it’s second-hand? And then, _today_, and
tomorrow is not a fact. Goods “at bargain prices” don’t sit around for a long time - it’s not profitable to sell them and there’s no getting around it, put yourself mentally
at the counter and then figure out why ;)
And also see the above regarding the choice of platform.
>
>For example, to quickly write a letter in a text editor and print it in text mode to a printer, all this is not necessary. And the funny thing is that the text
editor in is-dos with a frequency of 21 megohertz and a ramdisk of 4 megabytes
will do most operations with text faster than a Pentium 90 in the latest
Word under Windows 95. :-))))
But there is also DOS ;) but in general, owners of virtual Spectrums simply and
there are no such problems, they have access to both and can always compare and choose.
Another thing you need to understand is that “normal” pussies never fall below
$600 ;) and this is far from the price of a Sprinter! And then, brothers, I want real
hardware, it’s like....oh, but this is probably off-topic ;)
For $300 you can always have a Spectrum in the most modern, most powerful
configuration. For $200 a year you can fill yourself with the most modern, most licensed software, tobesides, you will be surrounded by such nice people...
this is where the main thrill is! Who is interested in 1000 users in writing, ugh, a million
more - a million less ;) And we have 100 people - that's already wow... hali-gali!
:)
>
> MF>: Again we were talking about the fact that for machines of such a class as the Sprinter
> MF> programs: you have to write not in C.
It's just that the z80 is not A very “good C-machine”...otherwise C
programs would hardly slow down. 8 rub. for C - not enough, 16r is just right :( (remember
at least DVK-3M)
But there are almost assembly-level languages, but nevertheless of a high level.
Their compilers, to my great regret, have not been noticed on Spectrums :(
If a person is drawn to pee in codes, this means only one thing: he
is not satisfied with any of the ones available to him assemblers, and wasting time
writing the “assembler of your dreams” is a waste of time.
By the way, I will say that normal compilers from any Java program give you the opportunity to
multi-level optimization and viewing each line in the assembler code,
as well as assembly inserts.
Another point is that you must have a debugger that accepts the operators
of this Java program, otherwise there are advantages writing in Java is far from being fully used.
And since there is not a single debugger on the Spectrum that accepts C (if I'm wrong, please correct me: this questionI'm very interested), then the incentive to write programs in it is significantly reduced. It is used only as
an “automatic gearbox”, as an assembly code generator for
“dumb and lazy” coders ;) and for transferring software from other platforms (it was
this function of C that provided excellent “portability” of Unixes)

> And that is why programs on the PC are slowed down, that the programmer thinks
>only about his time, and not about the time of users his
program, and the amount of money they spent on upgrades in order to achieve
a decent speed of operation of his programs.
On PC this most often does not depend on him... try to write a program yourself with
100 thousand operators and you will understand what I’m talking about. So he tries (in order to simply cope with the task at hand, without ending up in a madhouse) to choose a “suitable
tool”.
And the quality of his product is largely on the conscience of the creators of the “tools”.
But the drivers “lick” the written word, at least...damn, the name of a cool Russifying driver flew out of my head
DOS, from somewhere in Ukraine.
Ie. If the program is small and “in code,” then excellent results can be achieved on a computer. Rewrite "vyndos" in this way, if you have enough health, and you will see
"a marvelous marvel." Only such foolsno, the last romantics were apparently
in Digital Research (Gates once wrote his first VASIK under their CP/M :) )

>The Sprinter does not pretend to be the coolest computer, just like the PC. The idea is to make
it a convenient and cheap computer for the home, with optimal
>price/performance parameters, again for the home.
This is not at all the task that was posed and solved! no need to la-la...the main thing is to get the Spectrum ZX-Windows and break through to educational institutions due to low prices! Or am I wrong? Of course, if one of the Peters were vice-premier :) see above, or lower the “iron curtain” again :(
But in general, everywhere and everywhere I had to put multiple IMHO. ;)
For this article I have to apologize to f. Peters. People could understand
me exactly the opposite way and therefore in the end...

SUMMARY:
1. It is incorrect to compare the Sprinter with any Amigami and IBM PC. It was made
first of all for you, dear Spectrumists. And also to expand our
friendly family (but unfortunately, given the current very tough competition, _this_
is possible ONLY with the appearance of high-quality, but cheap SOFTWARE.:(
It is SOFTWARE that is now able to sell computers!
2. Who cannot do without an IBM PC (well, I just really want to eat, like me ;) )
but wants to stay with us - go tovirtual category (but you
will need $500 or more for this “pleasure”)
3. Sprinter today is the COOLEST SPECTRUM! but, I would wish it
to the creators a little more balance in the architecture in the new models.
Here, as they say, “the first pancake is lumpy.” We must honestly tell people that
dynamic graphics are now not possible in all modes, and modes with graphics
of the highest resolution will allow you to watch beautiful pictures on the entire screen,
and demos or toys will not be allowed at full screen, which by the way is not so bad...
Imagine: a “beautiful scene” on the entire screen, and in some places
quite fast moving, superbly drawn pictures.
No, maybe I got carried away, exactly Combining different modes on one
screen makes it possible to remove the problem of “full-screen slowdown”

Sincerely, Andrey Savichev / CGS
