Sprinter(2Tim Yunaev)

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Andrew Savichev To All 27 January 1998

Hello!

>I’m compiling programs on DX4-100 with 700 kilos of _code_ sources. It slows down. But
>tolerable.
>By the way, you somehow miss that this very slow software
has several orders of magnitude more capabilities, and that a similar one will appear (if
>appears) on Sprinter no earlier than in 2-3 years.
I didn’t say that it’s intolerable. My four are also enough for me for now!
But we are talking about the Spectrum! If I want to buy a natural one, what do you
recommend me? Another four ;) or a stump? And what do they have to do with it?
I’ll repeat the task once again: you need to buy a natural Spectrum...and
what are you talking about, in fact... “don’t buy natural Spectrum”
Well? ...what? :)) is there anything to argue about further?

>So what? The microcircuit is not a motor, the bearings in it do not wear out.
There are motors and floating heads...but that’s not the point...I don’t like mechanics
in a word...especially “screws” ;)
>
>Immediately. If a spektrumist doesn’t need anything other than a Spectrum, why does he need a Sprinter?
So, should I go and ask for 128 for a can of beer?...ridiculous!...yesterday I
would have bought a Scorpio without hesitation...but today I have to “scratch my turnips”...and
I don’t have a Sprinter yet...it’s funny for me to put it next to SVGA, CGA.
Whatever, but you can work for hours on an emulsion! and don’t apply tea lotions to your eyes afterwards (by the way, it helps a lot for those who don’t have LRand
there is no protective screen) TV? ...it depends on which one, but the cool one still needs
PAL.

>If it needs more capabilities than on the Spectrum, then what kind of these
necessary capabilities?
Please...I need: 256x192x16/256 (320x200x16 text), a graphic
accelerator and a z80 processor for 1-5 mips (at least) A this is Sprinter!
I will not refuse CD-ROM and ISA-8.
>The only advantage is an unchangeable assembler. That's it.
+ advanced graphics + graphics and processor acceleration + new operating system +
additional memory + emulation of different compers (which is very important for
software makers, for example)

> AS> difference with Scorpio (it seems that professional ROM is not emulated). Although it is better
> AS> to have the original Scorpio, and Pentagon, and Sprinter - if
> AS> money allows.
>
>Why three computers at home? "for the soul"? I don't understand at all. Or is it “the rich have their
whims”?
To compare how good the emulation is on Sprinter...if it’s really 100%, then that’s it: one Sprinter replaces all Spectrum-compatible computers and
you won’t have any problems with Spectrum software! :)

> AS> And here is your answer in essence: if we compare this $100 and the total
> AS> cost of a “normal today” IBM computer is $500
>
>Don’t compare the Pentium MMX-166. I'masked to compare the _hardware_ platform, and
>you immediately jumped to another, changing one of the conditions. You could also compare it with SGI.
I didn’t take the last option for $900-1400. IMHO $500 is just between $200 and
$1400 :)
>
>We count again. Motherboard + processor Pentium (!) K5-90 - $110 (used - $60), SB Pro
>8/16 bit 44KHz + sloppy MIDI - $20 (used) - $10-$15, video S3 Trio64V+ - $20
>(PCI, 1Mb RAM). RAM 4Mb - $15-$20. Where did I go wrong?
>
>We get a minimum of $110, an average of $130. This is for a computer K5-90/4Mb/SB/Video 1Mb
>in comparison with the Sprinter board $100.
But we didn’t compare the boards!!!
Now, attention, the most interesting part begins: cases, mice, monitors,
keyboards are the same price.
But!!!!! what to do on a stump with a 40mg screw? and for Sprinter he is “behind the eyes and behind the ears”
Next, for now, alas:( CD-ROM Sprinter doesn’t care, what’s on the stump without it?
Where do you dump the archives? If you have a VCR in the house, that’s still good, plus ARVID,
and if not?....money floated out of your wallet ;(.
Well, it turned out to be $400? I think so! :)
And the fact that you can’t save much on a motherboard is just an argument in favor
of buying a good stump! But that’s not what we’re talking about!!!
Here, in the Spectrum echo, we should discuss which motherboard to choose for
Spectrum!
And here there is only one choice today: Scorpio or Sprinter Unfortunately (.and
maybe fortunately) on the Spectrum there is no such unification as on the IBM PC.
So this choice is much more complex and it is not MONEY that can have a decisive influence on it, but other factors!
>
>Both described configurations require a mouse, a keyboard, a case with a power supply, a flop,
a screw. I don’t count them - because the price will increase equally in both cases. A PC needs a
monitor - take MC6105 ($15), convert it to VGA ($15). Or buy used
>color VGA/SVGA, $100. So what?
>
>It is described in such detail so as not to waste time in the future. If you
>disagree with anything, call me back, please.
Please, although this is obvious and I said the same thing above.
Devices and cases are now standard, all that’s left to choose is “mothers” and “cards”.
With the choice of platform, this is not the case. Of course, no one is stopping you from working on
5-6 platforms, but you still have to discuss each one in its own place ;)

> AS> - then you need to start with the mother! Now let's get back to the software. What
> AS> awaits you on the pussy?
>
>Then a clarification: what awaits me on the Sprinter? Nothing, right? Nothing at all.
>By the way, no Fido, no Internet.
Well, come on?!!...so what are you doing here then? :) ... "gave up" on the Spectrum and
trying to convince others to do the same.
Are 10 million IBM PC users thirsty for the blood of 5 thousand usersSpectrum or
you have no one to sell your old stuff to;)? and “well, I really want to” upgrade, isn’t this the only reason? ;) ...just kidding, don't be offended.

>What for???? Corel 4.0 (freeware!) runs great on 4.
>Why do you need an editor for DOS? What should they draw, sprites?
Pictures for the Spectrum! :)
>
>If the goal is to save money, then you don’t need to buy a computer at all.
>You need to buy shares in JSC MMM and prosper.
I appreciate your humor...
>My computer managed to pay for itself twice, by the way. You have to work on it, and
>it is desirable to be paid for the work.
...and your ability to “make money” :)
>
>So, the question remains open: if a spektrumist has an extra $200, why will he
>buy the Sprinter, if by calculation. power - this is clearly a backward computer?
>If for the same money you can buy (see above)?
Here is my only answer to your only question:
if he wants to change the Spectrum to an IBM PC, then nothing will hold him back, but I
would not advise this person to buy junk!!! There is $500 - minimum and
there are orders to be guaranteed to earn at least $1000 (because
you also want to eat, and in a year $300 of these $500 bye-bye) - “forward with
songs”!
>
>With respect, Tim. [Team Aries - Rulez Forever]

With respect, Aries Andrey Savichev / CGS!:)

From Tim Yunaev To All 28 January 1998

AS> I didn’t take the last option for $900-1400. IMHO $500 is just between
AS> $200 and $1400 :)

This is already P2 and 128 RAM, the coolest (128RAM onboard) video and prof sound.
We are only talking about a board with processor, video and sound?

AS> But we weren’t comparing boards!!!

Boards.

AS> Now, attention, the most interesting part begins : cases, mice,
AS> monitors, keyboards they have the same price. But!!!!! what to do on a stump with
AS> a 40MEG screw?

Install an emulator and 40 floppy disks. Enough?

AS> and for Sprinter he is “by the eyes and by the ears”

The same thing.

AS> Next, for now, alas :( CD-ROM Sprinter doesn’t care about the drum, on a stump without it
AS> how?

Calm down. Or do you want to say that it won’t work without a CD-ROM?
Oh, do you still want to watch movies? And install software without fussing with floppy disks? Well
then be kind enough to pay money for your desires.
By the way, you won’t even watch movies on the Sprinter, no matter what kind of seed you put on.

AS> And where to dump the archives?

Well, master, this is completely dishonest for you or go (C)
Do you agree that a stump with a 40 MG screw will have all the capabilities of a standard
Spectrum + a huge one? a bunch of others?
And if you want more, pay more. Moreover, considering that on the Sprinter you can
only _want_ more - you won’t get it.

AS> If the videoac is in the house -this is still good, plus ARVID, but if
AS> is not there?....the money has floated out of your wallet ;(.

Here I have a video recorder, I don’t have and won’t have Arvid.

AS> Well, it turned out to be $400? I think so! :)

Recalculate taking into account the above.

AS> Please, although this is obvious and I said the same thing above. Devices
AS> and cases are now standard, all that remains is to choose “mothers” and “cards”.
AS> With the choice of platform - this is not the case. Of course, no one is stopping you
AS> from working on 5-6 platforms, but you still have to discuss each one in
AS> its own place ;)

So we are discussing - _why_ is Sprinter needed? Who will buy it?
