Spectrum, what should it be? (was Promotion...)
ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»
From Andrew Savichev → To All 29 March 1998
Hi, All!
The prerequisites for the new promotion are real
and potential:
1) networks allow you to “stroke a chord” in
those who remember about the Spectrum, but
“have forgotten a little”;
they can also tell those who
only have pee at work (at school, at
institute)
“Hey friend, should you buy on
$100, which is all you have,
all sorts of writing junk that won't
today - tomorrow you'll die physically
(for example, old worn-out screws? "
There is also a possibility of a "cover" of free software for writing.
2) Spectrum cannot freeze and stand still
in its development. "Freeze" is the same root word as "die". But it should not
sing in someone else’s voice.
Everything that grows out of it should
be based on those fundamental
values that it has.
This is:
a) compactness (there should be
nothing superfluous, redundant,
unjustifiably architecturally complex).
Consequently, any “bells and whistles” that are
done should have a simple, reasonable
interface.
And no PnP! Unless by special order ;)
b) it should be ultra-reliable and
miniature (if this does not inflate prices,
hard makers should always strive
to make a small, elegant scarf,
if this is a new development).
But there is a powerful deterrent
factor here. A computer like the Spectrum, in theory, should be produced in millions of copies. But this is forever now
already unrealistic :(
Let opponents
of “emulations” remember this. No need to say, take
pipi, Mac and so on. If there is a chip
that programmatically (in fact
microprogrammatically) gives you 1:1 Spectrum
- 40 MHz and at the same time costs $20, then
I will install it without delay, because
human labor is very expensive these days.
It would be more correct to remove the bus and give
a detailed description of _how to connect
your hardware_.
c) a minimum of external devices!
There was a tape recorder, a flop appeared,
the tape recorder disappeared. An attempt to connect a
hard drive is, IMHO, deeply flawed.
Inflates the price, increases the dimensions and
weight, and complicates the power supply. For the same reason
there should have been only 3.5"
flops long ago. Are they unreliable? I agree, less
reliable. And scratching them is more difficult.
But they are three times smaller and almost half
cheaper.
Many people have VCRs
(player), and do they have a device like
Arvid on the Spectrum? If only there was
something to store it on archives, then many would not need a screw. 4-8 meg of flash and 1-4 meg of main memory (RAM - CD-ROM) would be enough
to be much preferable to a hard drive,
since many don’t care.I want
to listen to music compacts, and at the same time
it would be nice to store everything about
Spectrum.
1.8 GB (3 compacts), that would be enough for everyone
for a long time :)
You also need a mouse, keyboard and normal work with sound! in full
(but of course with moderation of appetite).
Regarding the screen.
You cannot “inflate the screen” - this is the death of
Spectrum. Everything else is “wrapped” around the screen: the speed of the processor, the complexity of the video accelerator, and the required volume of main and additional (“disk” memory).
As soon as the average size of programs exceeds 200 kbytes, the Spectrum will lose
all its advantages relative to
networks. Therefore, whatever you want, the video
memory should not be more than 64k, and in
the idea, the less the better.
Modems today, without exaggeration
decide everything! No modem, no platform.
There is nothing to do without networks in the 21st century!
A separate question about communication with other
platforms. The more interfaces
and converters - the better! There should be separation, but within reasonable
limits. You have to live at home, and not visit
us, but going to visit is very
useful and pleasant (if you are well
received).
These are all attractive features for all
spectrumists.
And I agree that ironshould
"whet the appetite" of the authors.
If the hardware is such that anyone wants to write something for it
(and the main thing is with the help of something and
literally "chewed" _how_, then a lot of people
will write. And if so, then
there will be a sufficient number of
professionals.
Well, and the most important thing - PRICE.
Everything new should be acceptable at a
price. This means that the emphasis should again
be placed on “hardware emulation” wherever
this is possible.
( Because the costs of developing
“microprograms” are one-time and can
be repaid gradually, but you will have to buy hardware
and solder it every time
and it may turn out that there will be
losses instead of profits and then
production will die out.)
And we must
squeeze literally everything out of every “iron penny”. Spectrum has no other choice :( We are not able to compete with
“yellow” automatic factories. It is also
impossible to place an order for them for less than 500,000 compers. Therefore, modernization of the existing ones is also
possible. Spectrum is one of
the last opportunities for the development of
the platform. But the production of new
Spectrum, if there are orders for at least 1000 - 2000 pieces, is possible,
especially now when the economy
is in decline.

The software on Spectrum is cheaper and much better!
I like that Speckie has DOS and BASIC embedded in the ROM! There are no problems with
unexpected blocking of sys files and failure to read sys disk.

Actually, I want to believe that everything I have from Specky iron, I

already)

No, it’s not flawed - it’s just not for everybody. It is indispensable in FIDO :)))

But you can come up with some simple multicard: a drive controller, a couple

I completely agree: CD is the future of Spectrum! lightly. Another question is that this should not be included.kit of the future (I'm already starting to believe) Spectrum, and installed
as a convenience.

Forgot about the joystick! You can do it on a multicard. (maybe the Z80 will do in order not to take up new processor resources!

Separate sound card! FM/WaveTable - that will be cool! Who cares what the price is, and
someone may not want to buy.

AS> you want, but the video memory should not be more than 64k, and in theory, the less

Well, there’s nothing you can do about it.
You can write programs in two (or more) modes to get 64k, and so
it depends. I like it, but IMHO no more than 640x480x256 colors!Specky ratio
screen size is three to four, like a TV. We need to come up with two standards
512X384X256 - for the TV and 640X480X256 (hence 320X240) - for the monitor.

In short, I imagine the new Specky as follows:
1. Open architecture
2. At least 5 expansion slots (of course not PCI and especially not VESA VLB -
too bulky) ISA 16 - just right (some devices can be crammed in)
In connection. with the above described, they may look at me with an unkind look, but
the architecture must be made open, otherwise the Spectrum will be born dead:((((
3. RAM 2 Mega (in the base) - 1-2 slots for 30 pin simm.
4. Video RAM 256 kilobytes (on its own board, preferably specially designed)
5. ROM - all sorts necessarysettings, turning on the standard Spectrum 128
The most important thing is the output to the TV (monitor)!!!
6. The OC must be flashed into ROM (itself, which can be replaced if necessary).
7. CASH would be nice to have.
8. Multicard with a disk drive controller, IDE screw, (from here CD drive),
mouse, joystick, communication ports, printer port, etc. but more
complex features can be implemented in future versions of the board.
9. The most important thing is that it fits beautifully and competently into the case
that has pissed me off so much. That is, the dimensions are small.
You need to sell without a mouse, screw, disk drives, keyboard, CD drive, sound card and modem!!! Part of the population has all this, the other part will slowly buy
!
And if they create such a Speccy, then the developers of both would do well to conduct a survey. You have FIDO, at worst the Internet :@)
Now so many new microcircuits have been invented, is it really not possible
to design them. We have had talented people for a long time, where are they???
It would be good if they added to it, refuted it, at least somehow expressed their opinion!
But on my own behalf I will say that if everything goes like this, then I will sell my
four am5x86-133 without regret and with the proceeds I will buy myself a SINCLAIR ZX SPECTRUM (that
sounds!!!), I think it’s better to leave the name the same. I will also buylicensed
DOS, the main thing is that the interface is convenient.
P.S. This is naive, but still .....

I don’t think so. And in general, about the minimum of devices. IMHO, on the contrary, there should be as many of them as possible. The more bells and whistles, the more possibilities.
And let everyone choose the configuration that suits them best
. For example, I won’t install a sampler and VLabMotion on my Amiga, because I don’t need them. But the presence of such devices in itself
is not bad, because someone will need them.

Don’t throw heavy objects at me! ;)
It means that any IBM motherboard is taken (now versions on
286 and 386 percent are almost given away for free). It _already_ has everything
you need in hardware: expansion slots into which a video card, multicard, modem, etc. are stuffed, main memory... For fans of miniaturization there are compact options, but they are more difficult to find.
It is best to take an “outdated” computer as a whole, then there will be a case
with a power supply, keyboard, display...
"Spectrum" is made on a small ISA card (Z80, ROM, decoder), which could occupy the bus and use all available hardware. Making such a card is much easier than most versions of “normal” Spectrum cards. If you _very_ really want, you can provide a "Spectrum" system bus on it, for Spectrum-specific peripherals.
If you get really perverted, you can add a ROM for an 80x86 processor,
making it do all the dirty work (convert the image,
maintain the file system on the screw, emulate missing ports).
Convenient and for “virtualists” (you won’t have to in real timeemulate Z80),
and for “real-life people” (in fact, they will have two computers in one) ;)
Disadvantages - emulation of the “native” Spectrum screen, you will have to forget about
multicolor. But text modes
and VGA graphics will be available...
Sincerely, George

Of course I’m wrong!
1. he is not SPEC. Spec is one of its features - I don't like it.
2. GS does not fit there (maybe through an adapter? although it is not needed there).
3. there is no video card (this is bad).
The main thing is that the point about plugging everything into ordinary slots is not fulfilled! (except

IMHO.
And if you have 1MB of RAM, that’s a must IMHO!

AH> Sprinter or am I wrong?
Yes, in principle, I’m right, but where is it and if it is somewhere, then how much
it still needs to be shoveled, so that later some kind of bells and whistles that are decipherable and insanely
necessary can be implemented there. As I understand it, all the controllers on the mother
are implemented, IMHO it is no good, a video card with its own video processor, inserted into its own expansion slot, Specky is needed! The flop/screw/SD controller should also
be on a separate card!
And two iso slots are too few, and they are 8 bits. I don’t like
kovoks, I want to have (in the sense of using :@) WaveTable music card, that is, I want
muson, not much different from the real one with 16 (20) channels !!!
But all this is not important. It is important that the next version of Specky be liked by everyone
without exception and become a de facto standard (sort of like that ;@)! It is important that it is
supported by coders, musicians, just good people!
But if one good person makes Diablo on Specky (new), so that it runs
fast, and networked, and killer music :@) This is where you will need RAM,
video card, WaveTable! Damn, I’m about ten people who now have 286-486 and who
wants Pentiums, I’ll sign up for a new Spec and a licensed toy!
IMPORTANTIT'S NOT SPEED AND GRAPHICS (although most buy into it)
BUT INTEREST IS IMPORTANT!!!
Just an opinion: I want there to be an inexpensive, not too sophisticated
platform on which it is pleasant to learn, play and just do what you love: make music, games, train your brain! All this was given by Specky before!
I don’t like pussy that ends up in an unknown direction. I don't believe that
without 3dfyx you can't write fast code, which also doesn't require
200WeMyYx. (I ran Chasm at the top four, because of the monster count, better than
QUKE)

[Description of the sophisticated computer has been skipped]
Imho this will no longer be a Spectrum, it will be some kind of incomprehensible monster
that has compatibility (?) with the ZX Spectrum as a function. And besides, you need to look at things realistically: in order to develop such a machine it is necessary to spend a lot of time and money, which, alas, no one has, and besides, if this machine is nevertheless made, then for some time it will remain pure iron, because old software will not support all its bells and whistles, and writing new software also requires the same time and money.

For me, Warcraft II remains my favorite game. First of all
I was struck by the battle scenario. I have never seen such a well-thought-out plot before.
And about CV I can say one thing: I have never seen it and cannot judge it.
But it seems to me that if to all the advantages of this game we add music, in
the instruments cannot be distinguished from real ones, at least twice the resolution, modem game and digital sound - much more people would
play it.
If I see it, then I'll buy it. But I don't want to buy pirated versions, because... I've messed around with these floppy disks too often. When passing"Star
legacy" after leaving the island the game gave me a message that it would be a good idea to buy a licensed version. Five times later I came to those people and exchanged it for a new one, “modified and corrected.” As a result, the floppy disk cost me 50 thousand

IMHO CHASM let down the level design.
It would be cool if such a game came out onSpectrum.
If a new Spectrum comes out, then a dual or triple
resolution from the original will be enough for me, at least 256 colors, good wave synthesis and digital sound.
By the way, on the new platform you can earn good money by releasing
licensed games, if of course this platform sells a good number of copies.

Now what I mean:

ZX-SPECTRUM. But this is one option. It's just that the ZX-Spectrum was my first computer, and that's something you never forget. And I want him to become better and at the same time
not lose his qualities.
Now Specky does not have enough power. If Specky were more powerful + our
programmers - it would be a real alternative to the 486DX, I think they haven't gotten everything out of these
computers. Billy just came with his “revolutionary” windows
95 and the system requirements immediately jumped up.
In the case of Specky, IMHO you need to do the opposite, i.e. increase the speed and

implement their projects.

Three mistakes, colleague. :))
1) The Kondratiev circuit is largely compatible with the same modem "Allegro" aka

2) The range of hayes modem ports in it: #x0EF - #x7EF and #x8EF - #xFEF

Decryption occurs _only_ along A4. Therefore, the state of all other

HeY, Vyacheslav!
Once in the winter I heard that a subj game had appeared and immediately decided that I needed to buy it... Having received a dozen copies from Ruster, and subsequently from Alexey the same number, as a result of which I ended up on the list of traders, but more on that later, I was pleasantly surprised.
The troubles began the very next day after its release in sale. :(
People who bought it began to come and demand a refund :-( citing
the fact that it does not work on their computer.
Well, that’s what I’m talking about. As it turned out, the game does not work on “Krasnodar” and
“Impulse”. The first disk is all OK. But when you try to load something from
the second, the drive jerks its head and stubbornly does not read. :-(
The reason for this trouble lies, firstly, in the separate memory field of these models, and secondly, I think, in the location of the bootloader in the brake memory page. In a word, the continuation of the story with UFO 1-2, which are also in the proprietary versionthey completely refuse to work.
By the way, I have a Pentagon.
After discovering this problem, I talked with Alexey and he offered me
to return the money for unclaimed copies. But I need a GAME, not “MONEY”!
I paid a total of 550 rubles for 20 copies, i.e. 110 was spent on shipping and paying for the phone - no one will return them to me, and I’m not going to demand this, because... this will be compensated anyway, but people want to play
and not look at the discs.
In connection with this, I have a request, although you will most likely refuse:
- Release a “special edition” - running on “Impuls” :-) which I will
purchase from you.
- Either the crackers will do it, and they will do it - sooner or later it will happen anyway
:(
Anticipating further “reviews” I can only say that I did everything
in my power to distribute the legal version of the game, but the
“version” itself is against me, so don’t blame me.
And lastly, I want to inform you that some of our comrades installed
a small hardware upgrade with which this game starts to load,
but it only works on "Krasnodar", but on "Impuls" it cannot be
implemented!?! Due to the hardware features of the computer, and only three people installed it, and there are an order of magnitude of users.more.
For this I don’t say goodbye, but say Goodbye!
Sincerely, Maxim!
P.S. My personal score is 9/3, I don’t have enough time, and the other day a guy I know
completed IT for both humans and kungs.

Yeah, in it! Well, to be honest, it was just cool to try to write a demos taking into account all these requirements! As it turned out, it worked out, and even seemed
not bad, but the desire to repeat it again (in the sense of supporting all
of these cars) does not arise yet, because... They impose a lot of restrictions on the quality of effects! :(

At one time, I carefully studied this problem and made quite a few games load normally on "Krasnodar" (PANIC DIZZY, TRANTOR, DRAGON S., LASER SQUAD
(modem version), GAUNTLET 3 ...), you can’t even remember them all. It’s not just about slow pages. As a rule, then, and probably now, it was very fashionable to attach all sorts of glitches to the interruption (demos, etc.), and then turn it off. and
continue loading. Oh, this is where the problem with “Krasnodar” arises - you need
to remember to restore the I register to the default, I don’t remember now, it seems
3F. And then everything will be OK and the slowed-down turbo loaders will really be turbo, etc., etc. I did this and had no problems, except in ELITE 3 I couldn’t open up the protection in order to insert interruption restoration somewhere, so I loaded for about 5 minutes.
So, coders, don’t forget to insert the sequence of
commands before accessing the disk:
LD A, #3F
LD I, A
IM 1
I don’t remember about register IY, whether I need to do something with it or not, I don’t think I did
anything.

Great, Vyacheslav!
VM> Question to those who played the subject (or demo): do

I mainly paid attention to the indicators of building destruction and
enemy attack. Less - building a unit.
And the indicator of your own attack was not noticed at all - there is no time for it during active
combat operations ;)
With the best, Denis.

One program, yes, but not all!

Usually, a normal user himself must take care that his computer
works normally. You see, for example, I can’t fix a program for something that I don’t have at hand, even if I have some information. If I have such a feature, I
do it, if not, go ahead.

Well, that’s great, and in #6000 I haven’t had any problems either.

It is necessary! And so that it gurgles for visibility!

VM>> flashing message indicators?
GK> What would we do without them? Maybe you decided to put squeaks on the speaker? =)
No, I want to update the dashboard - so I’m thinking about how to free up space.

Maybe you can give owners of cars with a separate memory field a circuit to
turn their cars into Pentagons? ;))) It will be popular, for sure
I say!
