ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Andrew Savichev To All 28 November 1997

Hi, All!
Hi, Sergey!

I wish I had such perseverance in achieving goals!
After all, “you did it!” Sincere congratulations to the editor-in-chief and the entire
team! :). successfully...there are only 3 days left to wait and, God willing,
(pah-pah-pah, so as not to jinx it) Spectrum's Network Universe will soon become even
larger :)
With my personal creativity, the situation is somewhat worse - the whole last
week I had to remove things from my old job (every day a pound of all sorts of "pieces of hardware" and books). But the best time for creativity - Christmas is just around the corner, and then new years are coming :)
I wish you all creative achievements, implementation of plans and successful completion
of what you started!

Best regards!Andrey S. AKA m@s/CENSUS GROUP Spb

Thanks...

AS> If possible, tell us about your creative plans for the near future...

It’s somehow awkward to write about yourself ;) We’ll have to release more toys... Until
you accept Fargo Wells, Road Runner 2 demo, Knightmare, Outlaw, Nemesis the
Warlock, Psycho City... (²Artie: what’s already happened?) Shark, most likely, will have to be
abandoned, after all, there is already one version, although without a weapon cheat and help...

In addition, you could do RVL4.2, although you don’t want to: it’s at least 100 hours
of work. And, as always, there is no time.

AS> On behalf of myself and my friends, I want to inform everyone that the voting for the opening
AS> echoes of RELCOM.COMP.SPECCY is going very successfully...

Excellent.

Oopsssssss.... From a newspaper/magazine/game-makers Step has turned into nothing an unremarkable "hacker-release" group. Well... Fate...
But they were going to sweep out the hackers with a filthy broom...

SN> In addition, you could do RVL4.2, although you don’t want to: this is at least 100

Well, yes - well, yes... “There is no time”, “there is no artist”, “there is no programmer”, etc.
I have already heard this somewhere. It seems, from Matveev... In a word - we played in vigorous creative activity, and waking up...

Good luck! Evgeny.

VP> are not crap, but good!
They are good, but: (a) I don’t think that these games are new; (b) -
anyone who has access to the Internet can “supply” themselves with them; (c) in
games on the Spectrum now, IMHO, few people play anymore, since there are all sorts of Dandy
and Sony Play Station, now mostly in price are system programs that
do not allow the Spectrum to drown in the sea of IBM and Amig, and make it a universal
home computer.
Well, and finally, the name “creative group Step” now sounds somehow weird. Everyone else who is involved in restoring usually calls themselves
a “hacker group”, and in extreme cases, “author-hacker group”.
VP> and what do hackers have to do with it?
So, restoring programs is already “author’s work”? Yes, live and learn. And just about a year and a half ago, the whole step considered it completely differently...

Dear Zhenya! The team of the creative group Step is very grateful to you for the fact that you still closely monitor the work of our team. Apparently, in you we have found a true admirer of our work. We
remember your first letters to our magazine, your first reviews about our work - so touching and pleasant. We gratefully accept the opinion of our true fan, so to speak, a fan of the Step group.
Thank you so much for the attention you pay to us. However, as it sometimes happens, we have to correct you, since your letter
contains some inaccuracies, which we would like to report in this letter.
As you understand, Zhenya, Sergei Novikov, who produces disc
versions of Western games, does this for his own pleasure. This work gives him joy and satisfaction. It should be clear to you, Zhenya, that the creative team of our group cannot prohibithim to do what he likes. The release of new “releases” has very little to do with group creativity. This is Sergei's PERSONAL matter. And don’t let it bother you that Sergey signs under the brand name of the Step group - no one forbids him from doing this, after all, we did the last issues of SPF together.
We hope that now you will not associate Sergey’s hobby with the work of the team of the Step group, which in essence is no longer exists.

SN> are not needed and there is no point in making/releasing them (²VM: ... ;) Nu-nu.

IMHO, system programs are just not worth the price. Well, first of all, it’s really
difficult to make money on them. Secondly (and this is the main thing), a “crisis of overproduction” has clearly emerged. Just as in the old days everyone was a hacker and wrote cool megadems, so now any self-respecting group considers it a duty to release a system program.
We have: almost two dozen assemblers, two dozen music editors, two dozen text editors. A new wave is coming - graphic editors (about
the "first sign" see ZXF-7).

What exactly is keeping Spectrum from drowning is difficult to say (IMHO, the insufficient
living standard of most of the population in the country and the presence of a large number of
fans), but system programs clearly do not play the first fiddle here...

With warm greetings, Glory!

From Evgeny Milun To All 8 December 1997

EM>> in a word - we played in a vibrant creative activity, and waking up...

YM> Well, why do this, Zhenya? Your words about playing “busy creative
YM> activity” will remain just words, since behind the Step -
YM> group is a whole milestone in the Russian life of the ZX-Spectrum computer, and behind your words,
YM> Zhenya, only meaningless sarcasm, caused, as we understand,
YM> solely by the pain for the collapse of one of the most famous Russian groups.
No... not for Step, but for the abandoned magazine Spectrofon, for the "ideological legacy" this magazine left behind - "the rest of the computer world is not our decree, we ourselves know everything..."
YM> But, as the French say, "ce la vie." Such is life - everything flows, everything
YM> changes... A new time comes and everything has to start over...
No, it’s better not to start “from the beginning”. First, let Spectrum get out of the hole where he ended up. Let the Spectrum software market become a normal software market, and not what some IFC wanted it to be. People are just
moving away from the phrase of one mmmmm... person... regarding copyright -
"it's enough to put the 'copyright' icon"...

YM> PS: It’s strange, Zhenya, that you didn’t accuse Sir Clive Sinclair of the same thing,
YM> who sold hisa wonderful invention to Amstrad and began developing
YM> electric cars.
As far as I know, Sir Clive Sinclair, at one time, did not accuse the same
Amstrad of lameness... And he did not pretend to be all-knowing, and especially did not
stand up in poses when he was told that on some issue he is wrong.
YM> Apparently, you don’t love him as much as you love us. Thank you
YM> for the great love from the entire team of the "Step" group!
Yes, you're welcome... Come again... You're always welcome.

YM>> in the end, we did the last issues of SPF together.
VM> This is a little confusing :( Somehow it doesn’t fit with the usual image of the group
VM> (even though it has moved away from Spectrum affairs).

This can be easily corrected... Sergey can write about his affiliation with Step, and when
the release of a new release in the intro simply indicate “Sergey Novikov presents.”
Wouldn’t it be embarrassing? Or what?

From Evgeny Milun To All 9 December 1997

VM> IMHO, system programs are just not worth the price. Well, first of all,
VM> it’s really difficult to make money on them.
I don’t know, I haven’t tried. :))) All my programs are non-commercial.

VM> there has been a “crisis of overproduction”. Just as in the old days everyone was
VM> hackers and wrote cool megadems, so now any self-respecting
VM> group considers it their duty to release a system program.
Well, you can still argue with that... IMHO, we are seeing just the opposite -
a decline in the wave of “game-making”. Just before, a group was considered respected if it released at least one game. Remember Matveyev’s words - “Why haven’t you made a game of class ZH yet?” This is one.
Two - I don’t know about others, but all my friends who have only played on the Spectrum have long had either a Pentium or some kind of Sega at home.
They don’t even remember about the Spectrum at all. IMHO, all this is an important
indicator...
Three - that's what you're hinting at, huh? :))) We have always been focused
first of all on system programs...
VM> We have: almost two dozen assemblers,
That's good. Since, IMHO, only four or five of them are suitable for normal work. Competition, you understand. :)
VM> two dozen music editors,
What I’m not interested in,I'm not interested in that. :))
VM> two dozen text editors.
What are these? Apart from four or five names, nothing comes to my mind.
Moreover, these “four or five” are quite different from each other, each has its own advantages and disadvantages compared to the others. As they say, “for
any VKS and color.”
VM> A new wave is coming - graphic editors (about the “first sign”, see
VM> ZXF-7).

VM> What exactly prevents Spectrum from drowning is difficult to say (IMHO,
VM> the insufficient standard of living of most of the population in the country and the presence

How much you know, however. Who did Clive accuse of lameness, and who did not? I'm stunned...%-)) Well, okay, if you found out that Clive Sinclair still accused Amstrad of being "lame", would you write him an angry letter? Something like this:

"Hello Clive Sinclair! I, Evgeniy Milun, a professional programmer of the sixth

In the 27th lecture of the course "Informatics and Computer Science" I wrote that

The sign, unfortunately, irritates not only Mr. Milun. It is necessary to clearly

YM> We must start with what is considered a “dissolution”... The latest product

It's obvious that you don't give a damn. :))) As I noticed, the life of the Spectrum

Tokma, please explain, with what joy Sergei will write
about his affiliation with Step, but: (a) no one except him among the Step members does
anything on the spectrum; (b) and he is not allowed to sign the word “Step” on his programs? Or do you think Paul McCartney still has the right to sign his albums with the Beatles brand? Or is this again the good old rule of the Spectrumists - “we are our own heads”?
Maybe I’m getting to the bottom of this (then, sorry in advance), but... but... the image that you created for yourself is too different from the one that you have now...

From Evgeny Milun To All 10 December 1997

From Evgeny Milun To All 11 December 1997

YM> I strongly recommend taking off your glasses and putting them in two pockets, anyway they
YM> show you in the wrong spectrum. However, it’s the master’s business...
:))) That’s it, that’s it... I’m not afraid to repeat myself - “don’t try to prove to me that I don’t have eyes.” I see what’s going on on the Spectrum... In particular, I see a confusion of concepts (this is when everyone comes up with their own interpretations of some words, then you are hopelessly trying to figure out how you would like to interpret the word “lamer”; then, literally this week, Grigoriev and Novikov are no less unsuccessfully trying to come up with their own interpretation phrases
“computer piracy”, and it doesn’t suit them, poor fellows, that in the legislation
everything has been “explained” for a long time; then here is someone else, who has not understood the meaning
of the term “hacker”, is trying to come up with his own...). And it’s not all about copyright that I see - “neglect” is not the right word. “Lamer hypocrisy” is more
correct - people not only do not know the law, but even in an echo they say that they didn’t care about it, but they very fiercely defend their “copyright”. Well,
I’m generally silent about IFC...

YM> Some people like
YM> pink, some black... And calling yourself “the rest of the computer

Young man, do you know that changing even the 1st byte in someone else's program
is a punishable crime!!! And all of us who remake other people's programs are criminals!!! Read the laws of OUR country!!! We also
signed up for this!!!
And what aboutAll the rich people don't care about specs, but that doesn't mean you're not breaking the law! That's right, you quietly change the program of some company and start to persecute everyone, and when this company takes you by the ass and rubs its nose into the law and says that not knowing does not exempt you from responsibility! Then you will sing
something else.
Who is the hacker?
There are debates on this topic all over the world and they have come to this more or less understandable
situation.
A hacker is a high-class programmer, a fan of his craft, who does not break laws!!!
A cracker is a security breaker, etc. the one who breaks the laws!!!
Freker is a communications specialist (here I may be somewhat mistaken since the information is somewhat incomplete and contradictory) and in one place I read that it was originally
subscribers of the magazine "Frek" or something like that.

And no matter how crookedly it was written, it was written by the author!!! And he can sue you
simply for the fact that you “corrected” a couple of bytes!!! Unfortunately, I only have at hand the old code, but even in it, for such acts, up to two years are prescribed, and in the modern one it seems even harsher, and there is a separate article dedicated to computer programs!!!
So, young man, erase all your names from everywhere, otherwise you risk
getting the whole reel!!!
What if the mess ends and we live according to the laws?

Shor Kan.

hacker

[originally, someone who makes furniture with an axe] 1. A person
who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how
to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who
prefer to learn only the minimum necessary. 2. One who programs
enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming
rather than just theorizing about programming. 3. A person
capable of appreciating hack value. 4. A person who is good at
programming quickly. 5. An expert at a particular program, or one
who frequently does work using it or on it; as in `a Unix
hacker'. (Definitions 1 through 5 are correlated, and people who
fit them congregate.) 6. An expertor enthusiast of any kind. One
might be an astronomy hacker, for example. 7. One who enjoys the
intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing
limitations. 8. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to
discover sensitive information by poking around. Hence `password
hacker', `network hacker'. The correct term for this sense is
cracker.

The term `hacker' also tends to connote membership in the global
community defined by the net (see network, the and Internet
address). It also implies that the person described is seen to
subscribe to some version of the hacker ethic (see hacker ethic,
the).

It is better to be described as a hacker by others than to
describe oneself that way. Hackers consider themselves something
of an elite (a meritocracy based on ability), though one to which
new members are gladly welcome. There is thus a certain ego
satisfaction to be had in identifying yourself as a hacker (but
if you claim to be one and are not, you'll quickly be labeled
bogus).

Good Luck...

is counterfeit, as well as all the versions that will be obtained from it.
