A full-fledged computer for full communication! :)

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Andrew Savichev To All 27 January 1998

Hi, All!
Hello, Artem!

> AS> In general, it’s not a matter of cynicism. In the West, such people (who have received an education through networks
AS> and communicate with peers and other healthy people
>AS> become full-fledged members of society and bring considerable benefit to it
> AS>). I think there is also practicality in my proposal: the more
> AS> intelligence works for the Spectrum, the better for the Spectrum! And what is your
> AS> opinion, as a prominent Spectrum figure, on this matter?
>
>That's the point. The meaning is hidden in the last phrases. They need a full-fledged
>computer for full communication.
That’s what the Spectrum is! Excuse me, but when in 1983
I came to the SM-4: 16 rubles, 0.5 mips, 128K RAM, 5 Mb screw, on which
3-4 people sat in parallel, I did not think that it was an inferior
computer.
All the resources of “full-fledged computers” are consumed mainly by graphics and video!
And bloated code and other segments are mainly a consequence of the use
of the appropriate tools.
And I will say again: a dial-up telephone line and a 14400 modem are not the best
channels for pumping volumes of information more than 1 megabyte.
So the Spectrum is the IDEAL network machine for today! (and therefore
home) At first there was a telephone in houses, then caller ID, then a computerwith a modem.
So, the Spectrum + modem is much more attractive than anything else.
Of course, you need to spend effort to make this obvious to more people
than now.

>I don’t argue, maybe there are a lot of brilliant people,
>but again - the Spectrum has already become the machine of a certain circle of people. It is almost impossible for a person who feels like a black sheep to fit in without the support of others, even the same
people!
This is true and not true at the same time ;) Many people now have nothing to do at all,
just to “stay afloat”. For others, having it is “not prestigious.”
But the layer that “needs it for life and in life” has become very thin...
but still, still...The environment, the world, the spektrumists have not disappeared!
This is still the world, not a little world! Here there is someone to learn from, there is something to learn and
there is something and where to assert oneself!
What else does a creative person need? :)
After all, there are no storms here that rage in the oceans of the IBM PC.
Here a person can quickly “feel the results of his efforts” :)

>Because. This is a teenager's car - a person "inferior" (sorry) may again
>hurtly hit! There’s probably no need to explain why?!?
She’s not a teenager! normal, the best 8r. computer, and now,
looking at the Sprinter, and in general with fantastic capabilities,
amazingly promoted, etc.etc.

>Therefore, the only way out for him is the Internet on a more powerful machine, because
>Spectrum cannot provide this.
I repeat once again... in an okiyan on an inflatable rubber raft it’s somehow...uncomfortable ;)

>
>Understand, speccy has passed the incubation stage of general usership. Everyone here knows each other more or less. The demands are (behind the scenes) very high. It is very difficult to stay on the market (read “scene”). No one is going to drag anyone down, that's just the way the world works - competition.
That's not what we're talking about!...hackwork everywhere is hackwork...skill everywhere skill...
talent everywhere talent...leaders everywhere leaders...
But let's say a stone carver and a wood carver...do you understand the difference
I'm talking about?
>
>I personally don't mind if different people work on the Spectrum, but not worth
>planting. You shouldn’t think that this computer can be turned into a “boarding school” with
hothouse conditions - this is, first of all, the real world...
In the end, this is what conferences are designed for IMHO, everyone chooses their
social circle, but everyone else, if they wish, is aware of the events, and what
remains “outside the field”, we find out from the press or talking on the phone, at sysopniks,
parties... festivals finally ;).
Pisishniks do not have such communication...for how can 10 million people communicate,
how can they befamiliar?
There is a certain “critical mass” after which all communication “falls apart”
People are like bees ;)... if there are a lot of them in one pile, they break
into several new ones!
>
>That’s what I wanted to say, but in response (not from AS) I heard, to put it mildly, a not flattering
>feedback...
Well, why “not flattering”. I tell everyone about this. Brothers, don’t take online communication too seriously! :) Here, after all, there is an exchange of opinions, ideas, knowledge and
there are no infallible people! Remember that self-irony and a sense of humor greatly
make life easier, and the “puffing out of the cheeks” and the look of “a turkey puffing up from the consciousness of its own
superiority over another small bird” are sometimes very funny :)
And then, _everything that you have done and will do for the Spectrum is the only thing
worth something, and “talkers” like me are only possible ;)... will amuse someone ;)
But still I love my Spectrum, which means I love all of you!
And I hope, like all of you, to do something real, necessary, new for it! :)
Let one of us with the Spectrum "out of necessity", all the same, time will pass and they
will understand that this Spectrum is a worldview, a philosophy, if you want!

AS> This is what the Spectrum is! Excuse me, but when in 1983 I

Yes? That’s why this “full-fledged” one does not have either normal Fido software or
Internet... But how would communication be without this? Or will we also make
visually impaired people?

AS> All the resources of “full-fledged computers” are consumed mainly by graphics and

Amiga will help them.

AS> And I’ll say it again: a dial-up telephone line and a 14400 modem are not

But if it’s hidden, you’ll pump over 10.

wah! Are you serious?! :-O

mean that the ideal network.

AS> modem. So, Spectrum + modem is much more attractive than anything

That's right, but without the appropriate software - it's not at all
attractive.

AS> What else does a creative person need? :)

develop your creative abilities and don’t sit with your
eyes closed, pretending that besides that hehas - nothing
exists anymore.

AS> After all, there are no storms here that rage in the oceans of the IBM PC.

...here the water begins to mold because there are no storms...

AS> She is not a teenager! normal, the best 8 rub. computer, and now

the best, as far as everyone knows, was C=64. You are confusing the concepts
of betterness and mass appeal.

AS> looking at the Sprinter, and in general with its fantastic capabilities,

Yes, the Sprinter’s capabilities are fantastic, no one argues, but it shouldn’t
cost so much today...

AS> amazingly promoted, etc., etc.

PROMOTED!? :)))))

AS> Once again I repeat... in the okiyan on an inflatable rubber raft
AS> somehow...uncomfortable ;)

What is the best network machine? :P

Good Luck...

From Tim Yunaev To All 28 January 1998

AS> This is what the Spectrum is!

Six years ago - yes. Now - definitely not.

AS> Excuse me, but when in 1983 I came to the SM-4: 16 rubles,
AS> 0.5 mips, 128K RAM, 5 Mb screw, on which 3-4
AS> people “sat in parallel”, I didn’t think that it was an inferior computer.

So then there wasn’t much to choose from. was.

AS> again: a dial-up telephone line and a 14400 modem are not the best channels

On the Internet, no one forces you to pump such volumes (by the way, modems
for 14400 are dying out like a class, and for 28800 megabytes it takes 5 minutes to download).

AS> So, Spectrum is the IDEAL network machine for today!

What are you doing? What network are you talking about, local???????
Or FIDO? Is there a full-fledged FIDO software (mailer, tosser) on the Spectrum?
Have you tried reading mail on it? Even in 42 characters per line mode? This is a
nightmare.
It is almost impossible to type Russian text on a standard keyboard at an acceptable speed.
TCP/IP support has not yet been implemented by anyone, imho, it is almost impossible to implement it at 48k
impossible, on 128 it’s difficult.
What network capabilities are you talking about?

AS> (and therefore home) At first there was a telephone in houses, then AOH,
AS> then a computer with a modem. So, Spectrum + modem is much more attractive than anything else. Of course, it takes effort
AS> to make this obvious to more people than it is now.

Sorry, this is nonsense. And the real one. A computer with continuous RAM less than 256k
is practically not suitable for working on the Internet. Just ask the people
how difficult it is to implement (especially on ASMA!) a full-fledged TCP/IP protocol
stack. Plus, immediately forget about www - text mode only, which sucks in our time.

AS> there is something to learn and there is something and where to assert oneself! What else does a creative person need
AS>? :) After all, there are no storms here that rage
AS> in the oceans of the IBM PC. Here a person can quickly “feel the results
AS> of his efforts” :)

You see, this is needed by a very small circle of people.
