ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Sergei Novikov To All 3 August 1997

Greetings, All! Glad to see you again!

Looking through the Belarusian newspaper Echo#3, I came across an interesting subject. I think
will be of interest to many:

By publishing this article, I risk receiving a bomb as a gift.

For more than 4 years now, I have had the opportunity to follow the development of the so-called ZX-SCENE. Several generations of coders, muzakers and graphic artists have passed through ZX during this time. The past year has been decisive in the development of the scene. A kind of revolution has taken place (another, I must say; Com.Ed.) in the approach to the creation of demo programs. Interesting trends have emerged in the formation of 'majors' (over the hill, this is the name given to large (serious) companies that occupy a solid position in any industry). The most
interesting discovery of 1996 is undoubtedly the group DigiTaL
ReAliTy. A fairly large staff and a high professional level of people give this group every chance to become a trendsetter in the world of games.

Have you ever thought about what is the basis of any scene? These are not creative figures at all, but quite the opposite, ordinary users. Everything rests on their interest. The task of the former is obviously to support this interest in every possible way. This, in turn, perhaps with the support of their own interests. I mean the incentives of P/O manufacturers. With the demo, everything seems to be clear - this is creativity in its purest form. But as far as system and game software is concerned, there is a problem. It is to give potential producers an incentive. That is,
there is a need for a connecting link between producers and users. The statement that the ZX is supposedly a computer for people with low incomes is incorrect. ZX is the best 8-bit machine. Proving the superiority of a PC or AMIGA over a Speckie is the same as proving the superiority of a car over a bicycle. These are completely different things. I am convinced that there are many people who are capable of buying P/O. People often ask me why we don't write games. I answer everyone: we are not interested in the process of writing games. It would be a different matter if there was a company/person ordering the production of a product for a pre-agreed
amount. In general, create conditions for us and we will work. But as long as some people
play the fool and shout at every corner that they are an organizer,
things will not move forward.

Musical accompaniment is an integral part of demos and
games. Personally, I am perplexed and angry at what I hear in some programs. Is it really possible that music is written by such tasteless and mediocre people?! I'll listseveral people (from well-known masses) whose works DO NOT make me vomit:
AGENT-X, IRON MAN, JAAN, WAKSON, NORO, MAD MAX, DREAMER.

SN> That won’t be enough... And it’s not entirely fair, from my point of view.

... Although the last two do not have good musical taste,

SN> Strange, Madmaxovskaya (SBG) the music is very pleasant... He
SN> is perhaps the best musician on this list (after Wakson). Imho.

... but still the professionalism of the remixes, as they say, is obvious. The music that took 1st place at ENL'96 is nothing more than a surrogate of R.
MILES. In the trio there is also a parody of NORO...

SN> This parody makes all the music of the same Noro combined, IMHO.
SN> By the way, the KSA music is called: “KSA IN NORO STYLE”

But the worst thing is that some “musakers” have the fact that they have no ear for music! And at the same time
they manage to promote their creations to the masses. To describe
such phenomena in the English language there is a universal
word - SUXX. In general, as for ENLIGHT, in my opinion, the results of the musical and demo compo absolutely do not reflect the true state of affairs. The best musician of the bygone 96th I would call the musician of the band WARLOCKS because the soundtrack to MIRACLE was made in a very original waymanner (one senses a creative approach,
not like everyone’s adored KSA).

Speaking of English. It’s completely unclear to me why write phrases in broken English if so much effort is put into protecting the program from being viewed on a proprietary machine? (question to
VAV/MEGACODE) People on our scene (we'll call it local)
who know English well can also be counted on one hand:
KAMIKAZE, E-MAGE, WARLOCKS, BACA, RAVER and maybe MAD MAX and
ALEX RAIDER.

SN> We've arrived...

One of the most common manias affecting active
youth these days is the production of electronic publications. One gets the impression that every newly minted figure considers it his duty to publish a magazine or at least a newspaper.
Moreover, the content of the material plays the last role. Actually, I have nothing against this, but I believe that it is much smarter and easier to select interesting, fresh material when living in a metropolis than in a village. Of the electronic publications known to me, I can mention the following: ECHO (Interesting! but the interface could be more friendly), ZX FORMAT, FAULTLESS (You know, I like to add adrenaline to the blood by reading the texts of the inimitable JOKER or read news from the scene like 'WAKSON - thanks for the music'), ZX-NEWS (OMEGA H. G. Freshmaterial!),

SN> Omega Group, not OHG

... SUBLIMINAL ECSTASY (XTC-3. Useful to read for the purpose of improving
English + an abundance of jokes).

SN> Well, my friend has tastes... You can read this only without understanding
SN> anything in English. By the way, it cannot be said that he himself knew
SN> English well, judging by his demos.

... The following people showed themselves well in 1996: VAV (Do
everything so that your new products work on branded machines and
then you won’t have any price at all. People like you are needed in RUSH.
Think),

SN> Busy. VAV in Extreme.

... KSA (SOUNDTRACKER PRO is exactly what you need! Now we write only in it. We are waiting for new versions without glitches), DIGITAL REALITY (RUSH approved :-), XL-DESIGN (Excellent quality in everything!), JORDAN/EXODUS (DIES IRAE is an event), PHANTASY,
VIRTUAL BROTHERS, COPPER FEET and others. While some are intensifying their activities, others seem to be curtailing them.
FLASH INC. - You can be called the most “promising” and little
acting group.

SN> Apparently, Imp does not have access to the Internet (which cannot be) or he does not
SN> tolerate the raver server.

Now about the fact that there is RUSH. The RUSH Association (RASH) was created at the end of 1995. Its goal is to unite talented
people into one large group with the aim of furthercooperation.
That is, joining us provides the opportunity for joint projects with other members of the association. The main condition for entry is HIGH QUALITY of products. Today, RUSH includes: DREAMAKERS (IMP, EVOLVER, SHAMAN); LAVERS
(HOTDOG BACA & COOL CAT VICOK); ELF; AVALON (AFINA, ZNAHAR,
SADMAN, SEM, VIATOR, FALCON); REACTION (JORDAN/EXODUS,
KRISS/ILLUSION, PYZA/ILLUSION - Polish national team); KAMIKAZE; APUS;
ETC group (KT-SOFT, PANDA, etc.).
