Poll about Sprinter video output (intermediate results)
ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»
From Andrew Savichev → To All 30 January 1998
Hi, All!
I present to the esteemed public the interim results of a
mini-survey on the desired video output of the Sprinter computer.
I remind you that I am waiting for your letters on this topic within a week until
February 6, 1998. If some are embarrassed to identify themselves, then I guarantee
anonymity for these people :)
In the meantime, the first results based on the results from Jan 22 to Jan 29.
In total, 7 letters were received + 1 vote is mine :).
Geography:
Moscow - 3
Krasnoyarsk - 1
Chisinau - 1
Yoshkar-Ola - 1
Kharkov - 1
St. Petersburg - 1
As we can see, spektrumists both from the capital and from various regions have become interested. Don’t let the absence of St. Petersburg bother you, since
f. Peters has already conducted a similar survey in SpbZxNet. But still
it’s a shame, Peter, who lives in St. Petersburg, is boycotting me ;)
Now let’s turn to which specific Spectrums people responded from.
Scorpio ZS-256 - 1;
Pentagon - 512 - 1;
GRM - 512 - 1;
Virtual (emulator) - 5;
As we can see, the largest interest in the Sprinter (as I expected :) )
is manifested among virtuals, those of them who are not averse to buying themselves
a modern natural Spectrum, but also some of the straights, looking
to the future, are interested, and, please note, 2 out of 3 already have memory
more than 256k, and if you take into account the virtuals, then 7 of 8.
There are no owners of Pentagon-128 and Spectrum-48, as well asThere are practically no Scorpio owners. Once again I am convinced that it was in vain that Dmitry Grigoriev sowed panic in the camp of the scorpionists! Sergei Zonov has nothing to worry about either.
Even if there is a slight reduction in prices for Scorpios, this
will only help those of us who are most strapped for finances to
upgrade Spectrum-48 and Pentagon-128 to Scorpios!
There also remains a market for all kinds of video accelerators ;)
Go for it!
Well and now the results:
Nothing unexpected :)
That's it! without exception, the owners of the emuls spoke in favor of SVGA (VGA) -5,
only one of them suggested (IMHO incorrect, which of course will not suit
F. Peters, who thinks that the main potential buyers are straight men ;) ),
that since the main potential buyers of Sprinters are straight men, then along
with this he proposed a converter (note! a converter) VGA to RGB, as is done on
pisishki! But this IMHO would be a great move!!!
Well, the straight people unanimously and categorically spoke in favor of RGB-2, but one of
them, apparently out of respect for me ;), restrained his egoism and suggested a converter(?)
to SVGA (I wonder if this is possible?).
Only one person remembered about the PAL output and then about the modulator.
Someone did not understand that the question was straight forward: “What exactly is the way out, if
only one is possible, without increasing the cost of the board?”
We can, of course, summarize it like this:
everystrives to get a ready-made output for the monitor that it already has,
but there are arguments in favor of higher quality SVGA (VGA), since “the eyes are more expensive” and “you run around looking for CGA.” And now, in conclusion, the most
interesting excerpts from DIFFERENT letters (may the authors forgive me, but since I
didn’t name names and there is nothing personal in these phrases, I think I don’t
take “a sin on my soul.”
" AS> 3. VGA - monitor;
AS> 4. SVGA - monitor;
AFAIK 3 and 4 in this case do not differ - both have a frequency of 31 kHz. I choose them."
" The Sprinter intrigued me. If it has a properly implemented
modem and connection to SVGA, why not buy it?! "
"If the Sprinter is aimed at spectrists, then I would choose the RGB, but I would also
like to have a VGA connector, because there is no need to chase after RGB monitors
for those who don’t have them (I was looking 2 months ago for my Speckie - I barely found it
- either it sucks old or it’s very expensive)."
"1. There should be an RGB output in any case -> because the Sprinter will not be bought by PC specialists (mostly), but by spectrists, and they don't have VGA/SVGA monitors lying around in bunches ;)
2. It is also advisable to have SVGA or VGA (but only one ofthem!)
an output (depending on which one is more popular) for the same PC monitors
and a plus for future expansions of graphics capabilities."
Send your answers to the survey, the more of them, the more objective the survey!
Sincerely, Andrey Savichev / CGS

One thing you didn’t indicate is your attitude to the quotes. For what purpose
did you tear them out?
AS> “The Sprinter intrigued me. If it contains normal implemented

Well, so am I listening? ;) For what purpose?!
