MOSCOW SOFTWARE PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION

PRESENTS

│ RESULTS OF SURVEY #2, │
│ CONDUCTED IN APRIL 1997 │
│ IN THE ECHOES OF ZX.SPECTRUM AND SPB.SPECCY │

> Yes! It's time to publish the results of the interrogation! =)

Briefly and to the point:
1) As many as 37 (!) people responded, this is 4 times more than the first
time. Such a huge number of participants is also explained
by the fact that I promptly sent out questionnaires to all those whose letters
I had saved in the echo and who did not answer themselves. This measure had
an effect, and I can say that at least half of
those 30-odd people to whom the questionnaire was sent responded.
2) Regarding the answers. From the very beginning I warned that for each question
you can give no more than oneanswer. Some were terribly offended by this
(it’s not possible to fully express your thoughts, but understand me:
there’s also no desire to check letters 15 kilos long =). Others did not
pay any attention to this (out of spite? =) and gave
a long list of their favorite games and musicians (2AA: ;).
3) Some questions (for example, “Where do you get magazines?”), as it turned out, turned out to be of little interest and I will not indicate the answers to them - whoever needs it will look at the letters himself. Ahead
of events, I note that people have become completely insolent =), and almost no one
buys either games or magazines (exchange, Fido plus BBS - a formula for
centuries =)! Poor traders and authors! :~(
4) Unbelievable, but true! No one named any magazine, except
ZF and SPF, among the best! Of course, these 2 magazines are absolute
leaders in their element.

Well, okay, I won’t drag my feet, especially since I don’t want to write this review for four hours
. So, the following people took part in the survey (I list
in the order in which I received the letters):

01. Andrey Litvinov(LAV)/GALAXY/SOFTLAND
02. Felix Arzumanyan(Felix)/SOFTLAND
03. Vova Hex/BYTEX
04. Roman Alexandrov
05. Igor Gruzdev
06. Alexander Bibin
07. Skyer/SCORPION_CLUB
08. AndreySamoilenko
09. Fedin Pavel/API
10. Mikhail Lebedev/DAPA
11. Dmitry Grigoriev(Oldman)/STEP
12. Vyacheslav Mednonogov(Copper_Feet)
13. Yuri Matveev(Matthias)/STEP
14. Alexey Smovdarenko
15. Yuri Sorokin(Lemming)/SCORPION_CLUB
16. Max Romanov(RML)/XLD/CS
17. Roman Petrov/STAR/RDG/RPSG
18. Vladimir Kasev
19. Konstantin Vinogradov
20. Danil Ermakov
21. Roman Kontsevoy/ALLIANCE_TEAM
22. Konstantin Afendikov
23. Alexey Andreev(Flashback)
24. Eldar Korotkov
25. Valentin Kuzmin
26. Yuri Kverznev/LAKS
27. Ilya Shirinkin(Dr.Dead)/LFG
28. Nikolay Przhibysh
29. Evgeny Milun (Paul Atrides)/SOK
30. Slavik Podstrelnov
31. Sergey Novikov/STEP
32. Andrey Fedorov (Alien)
33. Alex Cristensen/VBS
34. Sergey Senerovich
35. Pavel Voronov(RAMbo)/DAPA
36. Yuri Buravtsov
37. Alex Mikhailov/OMEGA_GROUP

If you named someone incorrectly, don’t be offended!

Well, now I’ll move directly to the answers:

1. HOW OLD ARE YOU?

As Oldman noted in Online 26, Spectrum is the computer of the young. But still, the age of the respondents ranged from 14 to 38 years. Next
we look at how many for whom.

┌──────────────────── ─────────────────┐
│ AGE OF RESPONDENTS │
├────┬────────┬────Ї─ ───┬────────┬────┤
│ 14 │ ▒ │ 3% ║ 23 │ ▒▒ │ 6% │
│ 15 │ ▒▒ │ 6% ║ 24 │ ▒ │ 3% │

│ 21 │ ▒▒ │ 6% ║ 38 │ ▒ │ 3% │
│ 22 │ ▒▒▒ │ 8% ║128 │ │ 0% │
└────┴────────┴────╨─ ───┴────────┴────┘

Average age: 21.371428.

2. WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

┌──────────────────────┐
│ PLACE OF RESIDENCE │
├─────────────────┬────┤
│ SAINT PETERSBURG │ 14 │
│ Moscow │ 09 │
│ Ekaterinburg │ 03 │
│ Perm │ 02 │

│ Novgorod │ 01 │
│ Rostov-on-Don │ 01 │
│ Taganrog │ 01 │
│ Samara │ 01 │
└─────────────────┴────┘

3. DO YOU HAVE A LIVE SPECTRUM, OR DO YOU USE AN EMULATOR?

┌─────────────────────┐
│ SPECTRUM/EMULATOR │
├──────────┬────┬─────┤
│ IS │ 32 │ 86% │
│ Emulator │ 05 │ 14% │
└──────────┴────┴─────┘

4. WHAT’S YOUR SPECTRUM?

Oh! I didn’t expect that there were so many scorpion people in the country! But the demos still
adjust toPentagon...

┌───────────────────────────────┐
│ MODEL SPECTRUM │
├─────────────────┬────┬────────┤
│ SCORPION ZS-256 │ 17 │ 47.22% │
│ Profi 512/1024 │ 04 │ 11.11% │
│ Leningrad 128 │ 03 │ 8.333% │
│ Pentagon 128 │ 03 │ 8.333% │
│ ATM 512 │ 02 │ 5.555% │
│ Moscow 128 │ 02 │ 5.555% │
│ GRM 128 │ 01 │ 2.777% │
│ Delta 48 │ 01 │ 2.777% │
│ Master 48 │ 01 │ 2.777% │
│ Yauza 48 │ 01 │ 2.777% │
│ KAY 256 │ 01 │ 2.777% │

Now it’s clear how to find out the number of Sinclairists. You need to ask Sergei
Zonov how many computers he produced, and multiply this number by 2... =)
But almost every St. Petersburg resident has Scorpios. There are almost none in Moscow.

Regarding the memory capacity:

┌────────────────────┐
│ MEMORY CAPACITY │
├──────┬────┬────────┤
│ 1024 │ 01 │ 2.777% │
│ 512 │ 05 │ 13.88% │

│ 128 │ 09 │ 25.00% │
│ 48 │ 03 │ 8.333% │
└──────┴────┴────────┘

It’s not worth writing under 48 also because among all the respondents there was
only one person who only has a 48K machine. However, it does not have a
disk drive; he is interested in BASIC and reads Computerr. It is absolutely clear that
he is not a potential buyer of newprograms.

4. WHAT DO YOU DO ON THE SPECTRUM?

┌───────────────────────────────┐

└─────────────────┴────┴───────┘

Spectrum is perhaps the only computer where more than half
of users know assembler well!!!

6. DO YOU HAVE A MOUSE?

┌───────────────────┐
│ HAVING A MOUSE │
├──────┬────┬───────┤
│ YES │ 17 │ 51.5% │
│ No │ 16 │ 48.5% │
└──────┴────┴───────┘

Fifty - fifty. But since almost half of the respondents are St. Petersburg residents, and all of them have mice (almost =), thenIn the country the picture is the opposite. For a
better understanding of the situation, I will provide the following table.

│ SITUATION AROUND THE COUNTRY, WITHOUT PETER: │
├───────────────┬────┬────────
│ There is a mouse │ 08 │ 34.78% │
│ NO MOUSE │ 15 │ 65.22% │
└───────────────┴────┴────────────┘

Apparently, most of the Sinclairists are already “seasoned wolves” who have worn down Spectrum has more than one pair of teeth ;) But there are no new arrivals in sight. =(

As you can see, most people use two or more disk drives. Only I
is somehow behind the times =(

9. IS IT EASY IN YOURIS IT POSSIBLE TO GET NEW SOFTWARE IN THE CITY?

Perhaps only in St. Petersburg and Moscow there are no interruptions with new software, although there are
exceptions. One way or another, the majority of respondents do not have any problems with this:

┌──────────────────────────┐
│ AVAILABILITY OF NEW SOFTWARE │
├────────────Ї────Ї────────┤

the undisputed leader is “Black Raven” by Slava Mednonogov. Although
some are already waiting for its second part =)

│ OTHER PLATFORMS │ 20 │ 54.1% │
│ Create something of your own │ 13 │ 35.1% │

Supporters of the first point said that it is always problematic to come up with your own idea, so it is better to take something ready-made, especially since only the idea and graphics are borrowed, the rest you have to do yourself. In addition, the loud name of some Amiga toy speaks for itself. Well,
it’s better to make an analogue of someone else’s good game than to write your own, but it’s crooked.
I have a different opinion. I believe that it is necessary to develop games that are unique to the Spectrum - to break into those areas that are not occupied on other
platforms. For example, noneThe computer in the world cannot boast of so many Diseys. Nether Earth is extremely fascinating. Have you come across
something similar on other platforms? I don't. Let's say you made Dune 2 on Specky. Which computer will an inexperienced user choose after seeing the Spectrum and PC versions? Right. Now let's see how he reacts to the new domestic Nether Earth, created and
designed at the level of 97. Let's see who wins!
Well, someone else's games (Doom, Warcraft, Dune 2, Mortal Kombat, Kyrandia)
will still be copied by someone someday. But you have to try to do your own thing.
This is my opinion, of course. Otherwise, someone will again accuse you of imposing your
opinion. =)

2EM: And don’t say that few people have seen Oberon - in fourth place!

Okay, with the “global” We're done with the questions - there are still a few less interesting ones left, but something needs to be said about them too. First of all, “WHETHER YOU BUY A BRANDED FLOppy DISKET FOR 11 THOUSAND OR A PIRATE ONE FOR 10.” We must pay tribute to the decency of our users: 29 of those who answered the questions
prefer original discs to pirated ones, and only 5 - vice versa.
Most people prefer to buy new programs from friends (19), some
are used to receiving new software for free (3), but still someone sometimes
buys it from authors or distributors (14), others - from pirates, but such
is a minority (2). If this were really the case and they took discs from pirates
at 7If less often, they would have gone bankrupt long ago. But no, they live. Strange...
No one cares about money for new games, but four of them are not at all interested in them.
Let's move on... 19 out of 37 people (that is, half) are members of some kind of hacker or other group, the remaining 18 work alone.
To the question "IS IT NEEDED TO CONDUCT A NEW SURVEY IN ECHO AND WHEN?" everyone answered differently. Some noticed the words “IN THE ECHO” and thought that I intended to conduct the next survey not on a soapbox, but in front of everyone. It would be stupid to do so, because everyone would know the results of the survey in advance, which weakens interest in articles of this kind. Only 1 person spoke out against the next survey - Max Romanov. Another six declined to answer. Well
the remaining 30 are both in favor of survey #3.
Now about the timing. Although the wishes were varied - from one
month to six - but there is no point in holding the third round before Inlight - the activity of the people will be small, but the results will not be much different.
Well, it goes without saying that checking dozens of letters and writing a report on them is an extremely complex and lengthy task. I spent more than 15 hours summing up this tour!!!!! =8-{= =}
That’s why “I’ve had enough.” That is, in the month of September someone else will have to deal with this matter=( Although this task is difficult, a
survey showed its necessity. Well, who's the next? Write with soap. Will you be able to do everything no worse than this time? Write, like me, a text of almost
30 kilos??? =) So what? A couple of days of hard work and... you'll see it turns out
super survey 3, from which all electronic magazines will then take an example...
