About this, about that (2Max Romanoff)

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Andrew Savichev To All 28 January 1998

Hello, Max!

> Yes? That’s why this “full-fledged” one doesn’t have either normal Fido software or internet... But how can we communicate without this? Or will we also make
> visually impaired people?
I can’t say anything about Fido, but about the Internet... which one?
off-line and on-line “two big differences.” As far as I know, building a
simple mail, like UNIX's, is not so difficult. Besides
I didn't say that there was software... it was really encrypted in the phrase
"you have to make an effort" ;)

> Amiga will help them.
For some Amiga, and for others Sprinter!
>
> But if it's hidden, you'll pump it and 10.
No, well, of course, you can fight with a sapper's shovel...10 meg is 5 hours
on my line. If anyone sends me so much at once, he will become my enemy to the death of my life! :9
Here is a Spectrum disk that rocks for 20-30 minutes - that’s normal! :)
>
> AS> So Spectrum is the IDEAL network machine for today! ( and therefore
> ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
> wah! Are you serious?! :-O
Absolutely! if people knew that for $200 they could once and for all have
such awesome opportunities that the network provides them (for example ZXNET
with Internet access - a freebie after all!, I think the number of “spectrumists” would increase incredibly
;) )
For example, when I was walking“surrender” to the Internet provider, I simply didn’t know about any such networks :( But now the possibilities of distributing Spectrum through
networks are decreasing more and more every day. And perhaps they will attach an LCD graphic display to Caller ID (Sorry,
smart phones) and create their own network,
with access to the Internet. And the first sign - SATURN, is already in St. Petersburg flew by (ZhKI-shnik
Svetlanovsky and a modem for 2400, only with 16 buttons texts are very dumb
to enter ;) ) This idea died only because the manufacturers did not really develop
the network, and to use it as a terminal (without a server) it should only be
deaf and mute.

> one does not come out of the other, as if home, then does not
> mean that it is an ideal network.
Ideal because it is the cheapest of the common ones!
>
> AS> modem. So, Spectrum + modem is much more attractive than anything
>
> That's right, but without the appropriate software - it's not at all
> attractive.
You can't argue with that ;)
>
> AS> What else does a creative person need? :)
>
> develop your creative abilities and not sit with your eyes closed
>, pretending that apart from what you have, nothing else
> exists.
I already wrote to someone: development for life? or life for development?
It’s stupid and unfunny to develop for the sake of development, buzzyou won’t get it, although
of course “to each his own.”
>
> AS> After all, there are no storms here that rage in the oceans of the IBM PC.
> ...here the water begins to mold because there are no storms...
Between the ocean and the swamp there are other bodies of water! :) and swamps, as you know, feed rivers! and without rivers there would be no seas, and so on.

> the best, as far as everyone knew, was C=64. You are confusing the concepts
> of betterness and mass character.
Why then “was” and what prevents it from being reborn? What did the people blame on him for writing? or on Amiga? with the Spectrum pah-pah-pah, this as you see did not happen. And as far as I know, the chips there were unique, which cannot be obtained or emulated. They took them out of production - and
“everything dried up” :(
>
> Yes, the sprinter’s capabilities are fantastic, no one argues, but it shouldn’t
> cost so much today...
And how much should it cost, the same as Scorpio?
What will happen to Scorpio then, you thought?
>
> AS> amazingly promoted and etc., etc.
> DISCOVERED!? :)))))
Is there anyone in Russia who hasn’t even heard of him?
And even in thick magazines they write articles about him! :)
And they have 6 retail outlets in St. Petersburg (even 2 in the very center of the city, practically
on Nevsky and these are only those that we Slava “discovered”, andHow many are illegal (which naturally no one will tell him about ;)), and how many are “sold from hand
to each other.” How many of them are there: “wild” users, “wild traders”? God knows!
Although, of course, all this is a drop in the ocean, against
compacts of pussy that have multiplied like cockroaches, which are on every corner!
And yet, still, still - 6!, and not “not a single one”, as in other cities.
5,000 versus 10,000,000 is of course an infinitesimal value, but still
5,000 is 5 000! This is the $1st thing, sold even to 1/5 of the users, turning into
$ 1000!
>
> AS> I repeat once again... in a jug on an inflatable rubber raft
> AS> somehow...uncomfortable ;)
>
> What is the best network machine? :P
ZX- networks are NOT COOL! :) 700 subscribers - this is more of a medium-sized lake, in which there are no storms and in which, although frogs croak on quiet summer evenings, there are still bream with beer and all sorts of fast-predatory pikes! :)

> DG> Yeah... It will be difficult to distribute software using floppy disks. Moreover,
> DG> when this software appears, flops as media will simply die out.
>
> yeah, do you think everyone will switch to CD? Who will write the CD? How much
> will they cost?
Oh, that was subtle humor, even I would say the hidden irony of Oldman :)
As for the CD, it would be WHAT to write. They will cost immeasurably,if
they are sold in dozens, but if in hundreds and thousands, then it will be tolerable.
Have you already forgotten the times (4 years ago) when writing software was sold
by boxes of flops? So it is here: CDs will simply crush trade
on flops (7 tyre flop with 800K software or 60 tyre CD with 600M? )
True, in relation to the Spectrum, it may turn out mmm.... The question arises:
how many CDs per year can the entire scene produce “on the mountain”?
IMHO, once, once every three years ;). But at least the positions in the price lists will be reduced, and only a very reputable company will be able to undertake the publication of such a compact for charitable purposes. Another prediction: someone will teach
Spectrum to read all sorts of HTML and PDF formats, and then some of the disks
will become available for both the IBM PC and the Spectrum. At least the one who publishes
such a disk can count on additional demand from writers.
And also...here...you catch a brilliant idea (prompted by the publication of an article about Spectrum in a thick
writing magazine ... on such a disk there should be texts
readable both here and there (for example: textbooks for universities, school books, science fiction
and computer literature, reference books and!!!:) on 1/8 of the disk (70meg) Spectrum:
emulsion and software for the Spectrum, both in emulsion and non-emulsion formats.
Then sponsors are not needed, circulation is possible feel free to raise it to 5-10 thousand!
But the “straights” stillthey will get a kick: a lot of books and software for 30-40 rubles!
And the writers will buy “their part”: for them 5-10 thousand is not such a big
circulation.
And the authors of the software will receive a lemon and a half (let’s say 20-30 copyright
discs are 20-45 lemons out of 150-400! I think about this, the company that published such a
compact will gladly go!
>
> DG> with incomparably higher capabilities. Or vice versa - a video processor
> DG> for the Spectrum for the same $20.
> it’s more interesting.
Depends on who ;)

Have a good hunt everyone! Andrey Savichev/CGS

From Max Romanoff To All 29 January 1998

Andrew is that you?
...why were you telling All about this and that (2Max Romanoff)?

AS> I can’t say anything about Fido, but about the Internet... which one?

well, you’re on the net, you should know what you need.

AS> off-line and on-line “are two big ones differences." As far as I know
AS> it is not so difficult to build a simple mail, like UNIX's. K

Well, I haven't used UUCP, but for I-NET you need to at least make
a good TCP-IP module + mailers + irc (that's where the joy of live
communication) + ftp. I’ll better keep quiet about www :)

AS> besides, I didn’t say that there was software... it was really encrypted in
AS> the phrase “effort must be made” ;)

So, if normal ftn software has not yet been written, then what else
is possible? No, you can, in principle, make a simple dialer with UUCP...
But who will write this? Is there any point in this?

AS> To whom the Amiga, and to whom the Sprinter!

You didn’t understand the topic: we have all this, but the Sprinter does not.

AS> No, well, of course, you can fight with a sapper shovel... 10 meg is 5
AS> hours on my line. If anyone sends me that much at once, he will become my enemy for life! :9

:)

AS> Absolutely! if people knew that for $200 you can once and for all have
AS> such amazing opportunities that the network provides them (for example
AS> ZXNET with access toThe Internet is a freebie, after all! I think the number of “Spectrumists”
AS> would increase incredibly ;) )

By the way, you can also send Internet e-mails from fido. Through the gate.
The same thing in zxnet. They didn't do anything revolutionary there.

And for $200 you can now have a machine with software, with a modem and with
a monitor and a screw. (well, PC it is). And enjoy all the delights.

AS> Ideal because it is the cheapest of the common ones!

Not the most common, and not the most common.

AS> You can’t argue with that ;)

So far this is so.

AS> Between the okiyan and the swamp there are other bodies of water! :) and swamps, as you
AS> know, feed rivers! and without rivers there would be no seas, etc.

No, I’m not talking about swamps. And about boners :)

AS> Why then “was” and what prevents him from being reborn? that the people withdrew from it because it is no longer produced, and to sell it on a loose elemental base is practically unrealistic, just like the Amiga - it will be too expensive (which is what we see now on the sprinter).
However, he lives with them, about the same as the Spectrum with us.

AS> did he leave his letters? or on Amiga? with the Spectrum pah-pah-pah, this, as you see, did not happen. And as far as I know, there were chips there

how did that not happen? :) happened.

AS> unique, which cannot be obtained or emulated. They were removed from
AS> production - and “everything dried up” :(

They weren’t discontinued, but the Commodor died. c=64 they did
almost until his death.

AS> How much should it cost, the same as Scorpio?

CHEAPER.

AS> What will happen to Scorpio then, you thought?

Comrade. Zonov will urgently need to do something better.

AS> Is there anyone in Russia who hasn’t even heard of him?

About the sprinter or the Spectrum? 80% of the population is unlikely to tell you
what a Spectrum is.

AS> And even thick magazines write articles about it! :)

This is a little different.

AS> And they have 6 retail outlets in St. Petersburg (even 2 in the very center of the city,
AS> practically on Nevsky and these are only those that we Slava “discovered”, and
AS> there are so many illegal ones (which naturally no one will inform him about ;)),

damn, these points are akin to street ones trade - only units
are equipped with a regular seller, comper, etc. The rest are on
autopilot. The catalog is there and that’s it. ask - they will give. But they won’t tell you, they won’t
show you.

AS> turns into $1000!

if these $1000 went into the author’s pocket... every day :)

AS> they will sell in dozens, but if it’s in hundreds and thousands, then it’s tolerable.

haha! I started daydreaming about hundreds and thousands! :))) In order for
the production of a disc to cost $1, you need to make a batch of more than 1000 pieces
(identical, of course). And for this you need to have $1000 (minimum). +
have 1000$ people, ready to buy (market). No one has any of this
now and never will.

AS> Have you already forgotten the times (4 years ago) when writing software
AS> was sold in boxes of flops? So it is here: CDs will simply crush trading
AS> on flops (7 tyre flop with 800K software or 60 tyre CD with 600M?)

if flops could be copied relatively cheaply, and flop guides
were distributed along with the masses of people interested, then here we have a little
another matter...

AS> True, in relation to the Spectrum, it may turn out mmm.... The
AS> question arises: how many CDs per year is the whole scene capable of producing?

hehe... 1/3.

AS> IMHO, once, once every three years ;). But at least the positions in the price lists
AS> will decrease, and only a very reputable company will be able to undertake the publication of such a compact, for
AS> charitable purposes. Another forecast:

well, they will wait for 1 compact for all 3 years.

AS> disks are 20-45 lemons out of 150-400! I think so, the company that published
AS> such a compact will gladly accept it!

Well, why is a Spectrum needed here? For the sake of heroic hemorrhoids?

AS> Depends on who ;)

To everyone who has ORDINARY spectra. (and that's ALL).

Good Luck...
