ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Dmitry Grigoryev To All 2 January 1998

Hello, Alex!

I apologize to everyone for writing here, but circumstances force me...

Alex, the soap is not getting through to you - 5020/423 does not find your address in the nodelist.
Deal with this or tell me your Internet address, if you have one. As for your
suggestion - I agree, I’m already working in this direction.

Answer with _soap_, everything comes fine from your side.

Sincerely, Dmitry (OLDMAN).

Hello All !

Is anyone working on improving the graphics capabilities of the Spectrum? Namely, an increase in the number of flowers in one familiar place (once one of the magazines wrote about such a development, but that was a long time ago). Or is this a hopeless thing?

P.S. Here I decided to do something with setting the color in each pixel (from monochrome to 256 colors, 256x192, fully compatible with the standard Specov screen) and decided to consult with All. Well, do you need this or
what... ?

$$$ With best wishes ... Alex

Hello, Alex!

It was like this: Alex Gofman 05 Jan 98 at 15:19 was pushing speeches to All.
Well, I wrote it.

AG> Is anyone working on improving the graphic capabilities of the Spectrum? And
IMHO, S. Zonov did something similar, I don’t remember exactly what it was called, but
it gave a resolution of 320x200x256 colors and the ability to expand RAM
up to 2 megabytes.

AG> (from monochrome to 256 colors, 256x192, fully compatible with
AG> standard Speck screen) and decided to consult with All. Well
AG> what, do you need something like this or what... ?

gee, I wonder how it can be compatible if at 256*192
the screen will occupy 49152 bytes? (3 pages)

my opinion is that the Spectrum graphics suffer
to a greater extent due to the inability to change the PALETTE, and not from its
limitations and low color resolution.

To top it off, you can do something like hardware multicolor (in
one There are 8 lines, each of which has its own ink and
paper...)... It would be better and the screen would take up 12 kilos. Optional
option - 4 colors for any point (also resolution and size in
memory).

Of course - the palette is 24 bits.

p.s. dreams... this should have been done 5 years ago.

Good Luck...

Of course it is necessary. A lot of people have been wanting to do something like this for a long time.

I'll tell you what, birdie (c) Spectrum is, in part, the structure of the screen. It is precisely because of this structure that the screen occupies few bytes and the ratio
speed/volume of VOZ becomes larger with a decrease in this VOU.
And the greater this ratio, the more dynamic the graphics can be made.
Imagine an increase in VOZ, as a result of which the screen will not be redrawn for 1 int, which reduces the dynamism.

Well, now think for yourself whether it is worth doing such bells and whistles.

From Sersh Zerov To All 7 January 1998

Information on GMX has not been sent for a long time...

GMX(Grafic_Memory_eXtension device for Scorpion 256)

1. Memory expansion up to 2MB.
Among the various existing and possible options for
organization, the choice fell on the option implemented in Profi.
That is, it is done in such a way that it is simple 256Kb are addressed the same way as it was,
through the usual Scorpio standard, and everything that is higher is addressed according to
the Profi standard - port 0DFFDh. Since Profi has a maximum
memory of 1MB, you can work with all memory from 0 to 1MB according to the Profi standard. It’s just that physically these will be different memory pages.
For example, you can download some program for Profi
using up to 1MB of memory and at the same time painlessly use
Shadow Service Monitor.
Gradations for memory expansion:
256Kb, 512Kb, 1MB, 1256Kb, 2MB - standard Simm modules. Moreover, you can
install from one module with a capacity of 256Kb (you get Scorpio memory)
to 2 modules of 1MB each - the total memory will be 2MB.

2. Graphic screen 640*200(208) and plus a hardware scroller.
The number of colors is the same as in the regular ZX Spectrum. For each byte of graphics
- one byte of attributes. In order for the image to be in color, it is necessary to have 2 Simms, i.e. at least 512Kb. Addressing
of the graphic screen starts at 4000h, and is completely linear,
i.e. e. first80 bytes are the first line of the screen, the next 80
bytes are the next, etc. Screen attributes are stored in one of the
extended memory pages. Their addressing is exactly the same. The main
purpose of advanced graphics is a standard text screen of 80*25
characters (a character has a size of 8 by 8 pixels), necessary for
working with text editors and email programs.
To speed up work in text mode, hardware
scrolling up and down is used.
In the future, due to the possibility of changing the scheme by changing
the ROM firmware, it will be possible to introduce additional graphics modes.

During the discussion of the graphics capabilities of the GMX board with potential
users, we received a lot of advice and recommendations about
what needs to be added to the circuit. In first place was the additional graphics mode 320*200 - each dot has its own color.
We are currently working on creating such a mode, and I repeat
once again that this will only lead to a change in the ROM. In addition
if it works out, we plan to do something like a simple
blitter: hardware transfer of one memory area to another,
filling a memory area with a given byte, etc.

3. Professional ROM040 (512Kb).
It is planned to remake the Shadow Monitor to work in 640*200 mode,
Russify it, make further expansion built-in service
capabilitiesshadow monitor, primarily aimed at improving
working with HDDs, support for various operating systems, and also
support for the ability to work with HAYEs-compatible modems.
In addition, the ROM, as already mentioned, also stores the GMX board circuit diagram.
Moreover, it is made so that from the TM it will be possible to radically change the circuit,
loading one of several possible options.
As for Prof. ROM for ordinary boards, then they will be
changed only if any errors are discovered in their operation
or the added capabilities fall within the existing hardware
restrictions. Today, version number 4.1 is being released.
The most important and main advantage of the EPROM installed on the GMX board
will be the ability to reprogram it by the user. First of all
this applies to programs recorded on a ROM disk. The user will be able
to select programs to suit his taste, create the contents of his ROM
disk himself, and also update the version of the Prof ROM on site. This
is achieved by using modern flash memory chips as ROM.

4.Increased compatibility with ZX Spectrum and Pentagon. To do this, an additional menu line Standard
Spectrum is introduced into the shadow monitor menu. In this case, all additional ports are disabled and
at the same time the standard ROM of the ZX Spectrum 128 & TRDOS is turned on. In addition
it has been introducedability to set Pentagon-128
and Profi time parameters. When switching to these modes, the computer turns into an absolutely standard ZX Spectrum or a Pentagon (you can easily make a Pentagon-512) or Profi, while completely “forgetting” about its
additional capabilities. Exit from this mode, of course, is only
by pressing the reset button.
The standard Pentagon mode, as well as the Pentagon-128, provides
first of all full compatibility with Pentagon-class computers in terms of
time diagrams of television scan counters, duration and
position of the INT signal, and the absence of the Wait signal. This will enable
some demo programs to work as they would on
Pentagone.

5.Turbo with an acceleration factor of 1.8-1.9.
Turbo/Normal switching as now: both software and hardware.
Upon user request, versions with a clock frequency of 14 MHz will be supplied.

6. Design. How is this expander constructed? This is a board measuring about 80*110 mm, inserted into the socket
for the Z80 on any Scorpio model.
In addition, a cable (included in
the delivery kit) is soldered to 10 points of the old board, through which the following signals are supplied/removed to the GMX board via a 10-pin
connector: R, G, B, Sync, Magic,
RDR/-reading ROM, CSR/- access to RAM, +5v, Ground.

7.Economicindicators. The estimated cost of the GMX board with RAM
512Kb is $35 - 40 (Manufacturer price.)

8. Dates for the start of mass production and sales.
Today, the GMX board is at the stage of fine-tuning the printed circuit board, so we hope that mass production and sales
will begin by February-March 1998.

9. Using GMX on other models of Spectrum-compatible computers. We plan to include all the information on how to upgrade another computer to support GMX along with the GMX documentation. In fact, any
Spectrum-compatible computer when using a GMX board is required to:
support for a music coprocessor, support for a TRDOS controller,
support for a keyboard port, tape recorder, joystick, printer and
some other minor little things.

I don’t know about the “small cheap” one, but the fact that it will cost much less than
Sprinter and GMX is for sure. I'm trying to make such a board that anyone
who knows how to hold a soldering iron can assemble it themselves, and all the parts are available,

There is one thought. I'll give it away for free. Use these extra 16k as ROM for that
converter. This may require more speed from the RAM. But
there is 62C512. This is 64k of high-speed static RAM.

What is the speed of the process?
At what speed does the screen fill?
What kind of screw and drive does it have?
How much memory does it have? ?
What is the speed of transferring data from memory to memory?
What is the depth of sound and how many channels?

Hmm... It's never too late to learn... I don't see anything offensive in this... And I
do not receive a salary from the Scorpio company, so my words cannot be considered
incorrect advertising, unlike, for example, yours - at the beginning of this letter. I
evaluate the situation from the outside, absolutely independently, therefore I have every right
to compare two companies, praise one and scold the other. However, I still apologize. Because I didn't want to offend you at all. But this is not a joke - this is my personal opinion, which you could easily erase and forget. Although, I won’t hide, I’m flattered that you paid attention to him. But instead of counter-arguments, taking an offended look, getting personal, belittling your competitors - this is completely unsightly on your part ;( Now I’ll try to explain my position...

You suggest users throw out their outdated models (after all, you won’t
buy them?) and spend 150 bucks on a Sprinter - a completely unknown car,
the first model that has not yet stood the test of time, besides with virtually no software support. Moreover, very questionable compatibility with existing software.I think this is an illiterate marketing policy, a lack of concern for
customers, and simply your company ignoring existing demand.

The Scorpio people do not offer a complete replacement of the existing vehicle fleet, but a
relatively cheap upgrade of it. Moreover, if you believe their advertising, this upgrade can be carried out on any model of machine. They are not thinking about how to cover up the architecture with stucco, but about how they will sell it all. Their first question is not “what to sell?”, but “who will buy it?” This is what I consider a competent approach, caring for clients, correct calculation of consumer demand and, ultimately, one’s own business. Yes, just better work, compared to
you. True, I think that their advertising policy is extremely weak with
sufficient resources for this purpose.

You are competent (I would say, talented) hardware workers, in my humble opinion, but as traders you need to learn a lot from Scorpio. And
there is nothing offensive in this.

Moreover, in advertising you bypassed them a long time ago - you let into the echoes of “young men with
blazing eyes” who, swallowing their saliva, tell how “flicks and avishki look great on the
Sprinter”, how “the CV runs fast at 6-fold
frequency”, how “yesterday we sold the first Sprinter”... Published yourthe biography was reprinted here, the interview was probably pressed a lot... True, for people
thinking, such advertising looks, at least, ridiculous. And for very many it is also
offensive...

I agree. You can do it as you say. But you can do it another way.
We provide _choice_.
You can buy a Sprinter, or you can buy additional parts and build up a Scorpion.
...
DG> You invite users to throw out their outdated models (after all, you

You are wrong here. Firstly, our company offers not only a ready-made computer, but also a separate board. Secondly, the car has already undergone quite a lot of testing. Compatibility with existing software is quite high. In the limit, it
can reach 99.9%,because all the “features” can be disabled and only the good old ZX-Spectrum 128k will remain.
Thirdly, the Peters company _offers_ to exchange computers with an additional payment,
i.e. We cannot be blamed for lack of concern for customers.
On the contrary, we tried to do everything just for him.

DG> The Scorpionists are not offering a complete replacement of the existing fleet of cars,

We offer an alternative option that gives the user a fundamentally
new Upgrade opportunity. On Sprinter, new capabilities can be obtained not by adding bells and whistles, but by reprogramming the PLM installed on the board.
Moreover, reprogramming is carried outdirectly from a floppy disk, at any
time, while the computer is running.
Starting this case, we listened to quite a few opinions from various people about what
they want to see in the new Spectrum-compatible machine. It all boiled down to the need for good and fast graphics. This is exactly what we did.

DG> You are competent (I would say, talented) hardware people, in my
DG> humble opinion, but as traders you need to learn a lot from Scorpio
DG>. And there is nothing offensive in this.
In this sense, there really is nothing offensive.
But in that letter you made an incorrect comparison of the GMX with the Sprinter, from which
then the conclusion was drawn that it sounded like an insult.

DG> Moreover, in advertising you bypassed them long ago - you let them into the echoes of

This is really real advertising. But herIt wasn't us who let it in. If you look carefully, you will see that I went online just a month ago.
Prohibit people from telling what they saw at the demonstration meetings?
They were held precisely so that we could listen to the opinions of potential
buyers of the car and do as they want, and at the same time show what we
did.

DG> Yours arguments?
I am not against various types of statements in which Sprinter is criticized.
But I would like the criticism to be constructive. The same as in this letter, and
not in the past.
In my speeches I try not to offend anyone. There are disputes, but they are to the point
and exactly what I do, and not others.

That’s where we started. I mean, from improving the video. The result was a terrible slowdown due to an increase in the amount of information output. We decided that we need to increase the frequency of
Z80. Increased to 14MHz. With all the wires that went to the video circuit, gluks went off.
In response, we put the processor on the same board with the video circuit..
And this is already more than half of the computer. We installed the peripherals and got Sprinter.
In the meantime, they raised the frequency to 21MHz.
A card for any Spectrum, that's good. But how can I set the graphics to 3.5 MHz?

As a result of analyzing the Profi circuit, I managed to find the following: the palette ports
are located at addresses #XXFE or #XX7E (I can’t say for sure). XX is
as far as I understood the RGB data (R and G - 3 bits, B - 2 bits). The
number of the color to be changed is output to the port. It is also advisable to display the entire palette
when changing even one color to avoid the failure of all others. The
ports are available when the latch is turned off (bit 5 of the #DFFD port is 1) and the
extended screen is turned on at the moment of the beam reversal (not a fact). The information has not yet been verified (needs to be verified).

In my opinion, Spectrum ideology is not at all in sandwiches. The price of one card, which needs to be added to Spectrum, will, of course, be cheaper. But the price of a computer

Huge minus! There are a lot of already promoted peripherals for the standard Spectrum

Tuesday January 13, 1998 03:53, Ivan Mak wrote to Dmitry Grigoryev:

IM> We provide _choice_.
IM> You can buy a Sprinter, or you can buy additional parts and build up a Scorpion.

Another division of the Spectrumists. Another standard. There were sipemniks,
scorpionists and simple spektrumists, now sprinters will be added.
No one will traditionally do “cross-platform” things. Everyone will be using their own software, with their own hardware that is incompatible with each other.

IM> Here you are wrong. Firstly, our company offers not only a ready-made
IM> computer, but also a separate board.

This already inspires some optimism ;)

IM> Secondly, the machine has already undergone quite a lot of testing.

Glitches will appear as software is written that uses the maximum capabilities of the
machine.

IM> Compatibility with existing software is sufficient high.

Well, I don’t believe it. Has the architecture changed radically? The "button" _turns_ on the Spectrum mode, and not _turns off_ the gadgets? Emulation can never be
one hundred percent. Regardless of whether it is software or hardware. And it won’t even get 90... Not everything is described in the docs or known to the people who
work for you.

IM> In the limit it can reach 99.9%, because all the “features” can
IM> be disabled and only the good old ZX-Spectrum will remain128k.

If you took the good old one and threw features on it, then yes. But that's not true, is it? Another processor, programmable logic, and everything else. Even the keyboard
is emulated - many cheat modes in games are based on the features of the traditional
matrix scheme. Simple question - are there cursor keys? How are they
processed? ON-LINE is buggy? In general, go to the market, buy the first hundred modern programs you come across. Launch it. How long will it go without glitches? Then
you can name the percentage of compatibility with Pentagon, Scorpio, branded Spectrum.
Compatibility not only in terms of “will it start or not”, but also in terms of multicolor,
speed... even in terms of glitches. I'm serious. If a program works great on
Pentagon, but hangs at the company, then on Sprinter it should behave the same way in the
appropriate configurations. And by the way, about the buttons - the “inconvenience” associated with
not processing the keyboard during disabled interrupts, has been eliminated?

IM> Thirdly, the Peters company _offers_ to exchange computers
IM> with an additional payment, i.e.
IM> we cannot be accused of lack of concern for customers. On the contrary, we tried to do everything just for him.

I didn’t know about this. I'm sorry. As I understand it, the ceiling is set at 200 rubles? This is
bad - I bought my Pro a year and a half ago for 950 thousand.

IM> We offer an alternative option, which gives the user
IM> a fundamentally new opportunity for Upgrade. On the Sprinter, new
IM> capabilities can be obtained not by attaching bells and whistles, but

All this is wonderful and even beautiful, but my statement about the need to change
the entire fleet of existing machines for the Sprinter to be widespread remains
fair.

IM> Moreover reprogramming is carried out directly from the floppy disk,
IM> at any time, while the computer is running.

By the way, from a floppy disk it is inconvenient - we would have flashed several common options...

IM> Starting this business, we have listened to quite a few opinions of various people
IM> about what they want to see in new Spectrum-compatible machine.

Can you name the approximate number of “advisers”? It’s clear that when you started your business, you didn’t
rely only on this number of buyers... And to be honest, I still
don’t understand the choice of the existing screen addressing in Sprinter. Yes, and there were no analogues - this is already alarming...

IM> It all came down to the fact that you need good and fast graphics. That's exactly what we did.

From the first announcement of the Sprinter, a variety of opinions were expressed in this echo.
And, in addition to the delight of the graphic. possibilities, many concerns have been expressed regarding compatibility and feasibility. It is clear that nowwhen production began, in general, our conversations are useless (well, not forcing you to throw everything to hell is too cruel), but then no one ever received reasonable answers. By the way, this is the reason for such a negative reaction that you met here. They've been waiting for you for a long time - it was impossible to get reasonable answers from your "agitators". Still, it would be nice to think, if not about compatibility with GMX, then about

The screen address changed several times. And now in the machine there are two methods of
addressing. The first is standard Spectrum addressing. The second is
addressing the Sprinter's graphic screen. There is nothing complicated about it. All video RAM is one large array, from which parts are taken and displayed on the screen. Neighboring points in a line are adjacent bytes in the array.
What specifically is not satisfactory about it?

To emulate ATM or Profi, you need to enter the circuit diagram of these computers in a specific format into a file for MAX-Plus II, compile it, copy it to
disk and load it into the Sprinter PLM. Then put the firmware
of the corresponding computers into the RAM and you will get what you are asking for.

DG> I would like to listen to the opinions of coders, especially demo makers...

Fast graphics from the RAM accelerator. Plus a different address. Putting a point on the graphic screen is faster than on the Spectrum even onfrequency 3.5
MHz. And at 21... Hence the speed.
If you need to draw horizontal lines, which are drawn on the Spectrum in pieces of 8 points, then for this you can use an accelerator and draw lines in pieces from 1 to 256 points at once in the desired color at a speed of 7 million. points per

Why without HDD?
HDD is available in Sprinter and is accessible from the TR-DOS prompt.
For example:
/dir - displays the HDD directory.
/load e disk.trd - loads to RAM-Disk E image of a TR-DOS disk from the file
disk.trd (Files on the HDD in MS-DOS format)

Next you can work with programs on the RAM-Disk as with regular TR-DOS.

and it must be saved on the HDD.

I don’t argue that it takes a lot of material investments to achieve the features that

In this situation, it is impossible to get a cheap product with good

for mass production.

Look at the hardware that costs much less, with
more advanced technology, and think about why your 8-bit

DG> Fix the keyboard.
What exactly should I fix? I just don’t understand what else can be squeezed out of an
AT keyboard that is not in Sprinter.

DG> set it to AY (as I understand, during emulation you have already “lost” a couple
DG> of undocumented features?),
Application, to be honest..
I didn’t lose any features. AY is still in development.

DG> implement SP/M (what to do - you need software),
This is the task of coders, not hardware.

DG> include an adapter for the Spectrum connector in the kit,
For some rubles, most likely.

DG> emulate common modem models (well, if for PLM - what is it worth it for you
DG>?)
Why emulate everything? Is one not enough? If there is a modem in the hardware, then Soft
will be included.

So this is almost the case allour policy. (The word 'emulate' needs to be fixed.)

DG> Bring back to life the “dead” together with their development companies ATM and Profi!
Is it worth it? What is so special about them that there is no other way to do it?

DG> I almost forgot - connection to the SVG (for a separate price). Then I will buy

This is in the plan, but not all at once. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ :)))

Possible. And perhaps we will.

As for ProfPZU - I agree. There are a lot of glitches. Therefore, I use 2.95 - the last
unprofessional - a minimum of glitches.

Nonsense. TM is a tool for hardware debugging, not hacking.

Or maybe it would be easier to connect a CGA controller?
There is already a write slot, there will be no problems with scanning and screen memory :).

Let's not compare CGA and VGA...
And the Specky screen is not quite CGA!
Indeed, if you abandon the border and expand working
field on the entire screen, then we get a completely readable 40x80.
How will the Sinclair Public react to the absence of a border???

What could be the problem??

Already ready-made software written for advanced capabilities, which
you don’t have yet. The same CP/M is already on ATM and you can support it at the hardware level, rather than sending people to coders.

Sersh is that you?
...why were you telling Andrey Khristov about Sprinter?

AK>> I won’t be mistaken if I say that _your_ computer is generally difficult to fix in Russia
AK>> it’s a bit difficult??

hey, I’m talking about spec :)

SZ> What could it be? the problem??

the problem is that there is so much confusion there over several years that I
myself no longer remember what and where, and how...

SZ> Stones, they are stones in Africa, except that the firmware crashes...
SZ> Well then, to the authors on bow:)..

yes, you understand everything wrong, however....

Good Luck...

there are curbs everywhere. It can't help but exist :)

Good Luck...
