Who will buy the Sprinter?

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Andrew Savichev To All 27 January 1998

Hi, All!
Hi, Tim!

>I don’t understand the meaning. I still don’t understand why they do it? Who will buy it? And
>they haven’t convinced me yet that it’s worth the money they’re asking for it.
IMHO, the argument seems to be about nothing. And your questions are rhetorical.
A comper has been made. The main software for it has been written. We learned a lot from its
developers. We discussed the advantages and disadvantages. It seems like everything has already been discussed ;)
And now everyone will decide for themselves: to buy or not to buy ;)
And how to use your $95 ($165) (who has them ;) ) everyone will decide for themselves!
On my own behalf, I would like f. Peters has successfully connected an SVGA monitor to the Sprinter!
This will make it possible for emulator owners to buy a Sprinter :)
And to confirm these words, I will soon publish the results of a mini-survey.
Scorpio owners probably don’t have to worry until the appearance of Sprinter-2
or mind-blowing software for Sprinter-1. For now, for them it’s just an
accelerated Scorpio, with expanded memory (and is it even 100 percent
compatible?), moreover, devoid of the usual proprietary bus.
For those who currently do not have any computer at home, options: burned
during the modernization of their Pentagon-128 :( ; sighs, occasionally taking out an old one from the far
corner Spectrum-48, it probably makes sense to think hard: whether to buy a Scorpio or a Sprinter, choose a good reliable horse or bet on a dark, buta frisky horse.
Those who have dreamed of an MSX all their lives should probably also ask more persistently
f. Peters will realize “his blue dream”.
People who are active both creatively and in terms of
business will buy first of all... since a new market is opening up for their efforts.
After all, so much has already been done for the traditional Spectrum! and here is a free place, not yet “staken out by anyone.” In general, there is nowhere to rush (but at the same
time, don’t miss your chance ;) ). But of course, there is no need to “drive the wave” in either direction. More objective information...and everything will be o'k.
Sprinter is an event and an event already happening before our eyes!
Spectrum is being updated - and that's great! And a shelf of competitors has arrived.
Hey market people, what do you say? :)
As for specific questions, here are specific answers:
>What about toys like rally games, where you need to scroll the entire screen? Or is
hardware scrolling implemented?
Yes, it is!
>
>What about mpeg, forget it once and for all?
Changing frames (as constants) is very fast, but it “eats up” a lot of memory and
video scrolling is only possible from the RAM disk (let’s remember about the small width
of the data bus), therefore limited in time.
When it is turned on CD-ROM, we must hope that “this state of affairs” will slightly
change for the better:)

>And who will pay for it and how much?
No commercial structure operates without profit, by definition,
and even more so at a loss. If there is a breakthrough in educational institutions
or at least a hint of it, this cannot be done without ZX-Windows.
Only if it is created, it will sell not hundreds, but thousands and tens
thousands of Sprinters, don’t forget about it! Even if they promise you $3-5 per copy sold, you can earn four to five-figure sums. I would be scared of this ;)

Educational institutions have purchased 386-K6. Those who have no money will not
buy a Sprinter either.

??? where did you see so many potential buyers?

You're just missing a couple of important points imho:

1. It will take _at least_ six months to create such a system.
2. Nobody needs the system itself - they need programs written for it.
Another two or three years (and even then, it’s unlikely to take off)
3. During these six months, the programmer needs to eat something.
4. During the first year of work, the programmer will earn money from selling 100 systems (a very
good guess). Even if it’s $10 per system sold. Total $1000.

Would you work for a year for $1000? Even for $2000?
This is despite the fact that people will still buy it. What if not?

And here, oh-oh...
MSX1 will probably be there, but MSX2... there is such a stone in the video that
Sprinter will need a second percent... Or this very stone ;)))
