Does anyone need a thread?

From Ilya Katargin → To All 22 September 1997
Greetings, everyone's favorite All.
There is a grabber of PC pictures, as well as a program that will then convert them to
everyone's favorite Spec. The program has a sensitivity threshold, that is, several files are created, starting from light tones and moving to dark ones (sometimes this is
useful). With its help, you can convert any picture in a couple of minutes, and practically no modifications are required at all (although some kind of adjustment is still
needed). So here it is. Take the pictures that I just ripped off from WORMS,
in my opinion, it’s really nothing.
There is also a gift to Steve/ADG/ex-PSG, although it was written a long time ago, but since
this same Steve squeezed it, it did not appear to a wide audience. And it was made for fun :) And the music there is cool. Amigovsky ;)
SUBJ.
Adios, amigo All.

Why such perversions? You take *any* more or less ancient
graphics package (Photoshop on the PC, Paint on the Amiga) - and go ahead!
You select the contrast/brightness by eye. And ditherish in 2 colors.
Here you correct the bugs (usually there are none) and that’s it!..
The only thing is that to use it on the ZX you need to either
turn such a picture into RAW, or on the ZX write a small depacker for any
format...
P.S. Just imagine that you have the urge to convert the animation :))))
Good Luck...

Greetings to you, everyone’s beloved Max.
September 24, 97 at 01:30 Max Romanoff spoke with Ilya Katargin
about the topic -=Who needs a thread?=- :
MR> Why such perversions? You take *any* more or less ancient

Hmm...
MR> You select the contrast/brightness by eye. And diterish in 2 colors.
MR> Here you correct the bugs (usually there are none) and that’s it!..
I’ve never tried it :(
MR> The only thing is that to use it on the ZX you need to either
MR> turn such a picture into RAW, or on the ZX write a small depacker for any
MR> format...
That's it, my program will already convert it to an scr file. Of course, there is no debate about the methods, but I like my version better.
MR> P.S. Just imagine that you have the urge to convert the animation :))))
Well, you don’t need to make a bunch of pictures in Photoshop, for Which ones to set by eye to brightness, and then feed them to the program, which will eventually do its nasty job? ;)))
In general, in order for the animation to turn out to be of high quality, you have to work long and hard,
and then, I can’t imagine anything better than 50-80 frames on Speccy, and only then
if they are really hard pressed. I think 15-20 frames will be quite enough for a
good cartoon. But still, the discussion was not about methods of creating animation, but
about methods of high-quality ripping off pictures.
Heretake for example the hit last season UFO-1 (UFO-2) by Vyacheslav
Mednonogov, because, as far as I know, he did not engage in such perversions, but just scanned pictures, and people dragged themselves to 8-O. I remember playing with UFO myself. And the program that I talked about earlier was written around 1994-95
and initially worked on a spark, and what kind of photoshop was that at that time?
And on the basis of this program we began to make a steering wheel toy - King's Bounty.
We had not yet produced all sorts of homemade products (I mean graphics of not the best quality) with the same name. The graphics for those times were very cool,
after all, then, apart from Vasiliev, Laptev, Dupanov and others, almost no one did anything
sensible, and these gentlemen clearly didn’t bother:(
They wrote almost half the game, and then I took IBM, and somehow I began to devote less
time to the game, and when and everyone else from STRG took Pentas, then the game completely died down :'-( It’s a pity. I would like to please the spektrumists with good work..
PS. I hope I’m not tired. :-|
Adios, amigo Max.

IK> That's it, and my program is already converting to an scr file. Of course, there is no debate about the methods

From any 2-color format - you can do it in SCR and in anything. This is not an obstacle. It’s just better to leave the graphics processing to good
programs adapted for this, and to convert - with a small
converter tailored for one or several formats...
IK> Well, in Photoshop you don’t need to make a bunch of pictures, for which you need to set the brightness on the
IK> eye, and then feed them to the program, which will eventually do its nasty job? ;)))
No, no need. For some reason, it seems to me that you have never used
such software... It’s done simply: select the contrast/brightness,
keep the image clear if necessary, and adjust it. You see
the result immediately. If satisfied - save, if not - UNDO. Having adjusted
the parameters, you make the remaining 20-100 or more frames... And you can convert
into sprites/screens with a small program. A few lines on the asme.

Qualitatively - only in programs specially tailored for this matter.

There is no need to tell me this. I live with him, so to speak, in the next house, and I know how the graphics were made there. It was done exactly as I say. Hе веришь? Ask him about this yourself, and
is it worth listening to me on this issue.
IK> Spectrumists do a good job..
there is no need to reinvent the wheel with pre-square wheels...
For working with graphics, there have long been quite advanced ones
program... you just need to be able to drag the resulting file
onto the ZX. И всё.

IK> he simply scanned pictures, and people dragged themselves 8-O .
Yeah, in the end people got fed up and had to convert all the pictures in
color. Okay, since there is at least one interested person, we need to share
secrets :)
1. To convert _color_ graphics, you need a picture with not too
fine details and smooth color transitions. Those. colored comics will most likely not be suitable.
2. In any PC graphic editor, cut out a piece of 256x192 and convert
the image into a 16-color, standard (EGA?) palette, in PATTERN mode.
Preliminarily, the contrast will have to be raised to about 80-90%
3. Write it to BMP (PCX) and convert in Novgorod ZXConvertor
v1.1 in COLOR mode. We record the result again in BMP (PCX) format
4. Return to the editor and carefully trim the resulting
squares.
5. Steps 3-4 are repeated until your artistic taste
tells that the level of “color squareness” in the picture has reached an acceptable
level. This may take 1-2.5 hours, depending on the complexity of the image.
The resulting image in step 3 is recorded in SCR format
6. The appearance of bright squares is inevitable (ZXC glitches). It can be treated either by
subsequent revision in ArtStudio, or by selecting a palette.
7. It is advisable to “go through” the final version with Screen Optimaizer
v4.2
That’s all there is to it. Of course, the highlight here is only point 2; to
come up with it, it took a whole year:(((
The resulting pictures will usually be in the palette white-yellow-red-black, or
white-blue-green-blue-black (pictures in 7-8 colors are rare). This is
beautiful, but nothing prevents you from changing some of the colors to your liking.
Let's screw it up E98 color graphics :))))))))

MR> No, no need. For some reason, it seems to me that you have never used it
You are right, there was no need: I bought the IBM 1.5 years ago,
and for the first three months I played UFO-I, UFO-II, etc. There was no time for convertibles. And then I somehow stopped encoding on the Spectrum. Steve-Gift -
my last work, which could at least be called
watchable.

One HO: I don’t have Photoshop, and I’m not going to install it for myself only as a scr converter. And I won’t edit anything for
IBM. And my envelope takes up about 50 kilos with all the bells and whistles.
