Communist SOS or capitalist SNB?;)

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Andrew Savichev To All 3 February 1998

Hi, All!
Hello, Sergey!
>
>Have you all read the article “Project Save Our Speccy” in Hallu... In short, in GlukoOpera? ;)
I haven’t read it because I don’t download large programs without annotations.

>Imho, the train left a long time ago, but you can implement something less complex and more
>real. In a nutshell:
Such things cannot be discussed in a nutshell... discrediting the idea of selling Spectrum software over networks is just as criminal as the idea of holding an annual demo party. Both can affect the entire Spectrum world
in Russia and the CIS. I must tell you that I have already developed the SNB project quite thoroughly. The main problem remains: linking to the current legislation
and at the same time maintaining all the advantages of the project over, say, official
network banks.
My deep conviction is that without a legal public organization
problems related to money cannot be solved legally. But it’s illegal...you understand...
consumers are thrilled, and the organizer of any such project, pah-pah-pah, can sit down ;(
>
>We were talking about creating a normal distribution network, where
>the distribution of Spectrum software would be handled by a large company like Inforcom,
>which would pay well for the author’s work and distribute programs via by mail.
Oh, but you don’t need big companies, eh ;)

> I offer shipping.programs to be carried out not by regular mail, but by e-mail. Many have Fido/Inet/ZXNet. The fact is that personally, for example, you can’t force me to go to the post office to issue a postal order, or because of a couple of games to go to the other end of the city to the radio market.
This is “I support with all my limbs” :) (the copyright is not mine, in the echoes you can read a lot). But the problem of secondary network distribution arises,
and in other words: someone pays money, and everyone listens to the music, and the majority
for free ;) This is a problem of problems, without solving which everything degenerates into
distribution of freeware.
> Instead, as an alternative, you can
>suggest transferring only once every one/several months a certain “membership
fee” (say 10 thousand/month), and in return, for the whole month, promptly receive new items from
all over the country.
No, Sergey, it won’t work...everyone wants to know _what_ he will get for his money.
The only possible option (for a non-profit network!) is this: the author presents a demo to the public (which is what we are seeing here), and then announces a period during which he accepts applications in bulk. We have about 600-700
people in our networks. Therefore, we can only talk about software (and publishing) products with the cost of a general power of attorney (Sorry, if I use the wrong term) in the region of $600-700. Note:downloading even demos and freesoft
from this echo costs me personally $0.4 per 100k!
Consequently, I’ll somehow manage to pay my dollar extra :)
Now about how to collect money and how to hand it over to the author.
This is where we come to the problem of “money by fax”. Money, unlike
programs, electronic publications, videos, graphics, music and other digital information,
cannot be transmitted over networks. So we came to my project SpectrumNetBank ;)
Alas, but if we are talking about TRADE FOR MONEY there is no escape from it;(
Let me remind you what its essence is, briefly:
every large city maintains accounts for its clients, who can buy and
sell over the network. Buyers naturally have money withdrawn from their accounts
and credited to sellers. So that the seller can have money "live" receive,
the buyer must hand over them “live.” This is where the harsh reality begins: the state, bandits and other ... shadows (I ask the co-moderator
forbearance, but there is no other way to say it ;)).
The simplest thing is to register with the tax office as a private
entrepreneur without forming a legal entity, or even better yet
to organize a non-profit structure. - one for the whole of Russia and the CIS, with branches
in large cities, it could, by the way, then completely legally
conduct annual demo parties!!!
And appoint its ownrepresentatives to the regions. 2 people in Moscow (official
headquarters + 10 people (St. Petersburg, Samara, Nizhny and Veliky Novgorod, Minsk,
Kharkov, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don, Chisinau, tell me if
I missed anyone) on the ground - no more needed!
Then the organization could open bank accounts (preferably Sberbank, like the most
reliable) and officially, quite legally, to take money from people and give money to people. There are three people in Moscow, only because one of them is an accountant, and
the first Chairman :) !
All representatives from the regions should have the opportunity to visit
Moscow once a quarter with reports on the financial activities of branches - this is important!!!
At the same time, they will be able to bring “money in a case” for mutual settlements - so
cheaper? Well, they themselves will figure it out later, how it’s more reliable, etc.
Well, everything fell into place: everything is legal, everything is solid, everything is for the benefit of
Spectrum and the Spectrumists. Just don’t take on publishing and other
functions, increasing costs - otherwise it will still be more profitable to use
regular network banks! The decision whether or not to buy this or that online product must be made by the users themselves. Authors must maintain
their programs, as is the norm for commercial products. The free electronic
Spectrum press is free to criticize, test, "promote"and
promote certain products to the market. For all this they should be paid by the
authors of the software themselves and their regular readers. The budget of this new organization should not include such
articles, there is no need to revive Inforcom in its previous
form!
The organization, I would call it SpectrumUnion, should only control
the financial activities of the branches and ensure the holding of an annual
demo party (organizationally and financially (in the sense of providing legal grounds for the sale of tickets, festival trade and the distribution of cash prizes).
Of course, it would be nice if in the future it would hire lawyers and start prosecuting all kinds of pirates from Spectrum, but in the future it must have its own Charter and regulate the activities of its branches. And the most important thing is to support everything organizationally and. legally.
No, perhaps there should still be four people in Moscow: the Chairman, an accountant, a lawyer and a representative of the Moscow branch! The “stage” and the users themselves will do the rest!
No one will buy a “pig in a poke”! Newspapers and magazines must clearly and in detail convey to users the characteristics of a particular software
product. To make money, they themselves can do the same. commercial
issues of their publications with supplements (newspapers) and receive money fromauthors of the commercial software products they promote. And magazines are all
commercial!
Newspapers and magazines CAN accept donations from individual
citizens, because 2-3 publishers will be pleased with all possible help from
like-minded people and authors, and those that are not in demand are doomed to
self-destruction.

>to the work and quality of the program. Those. some kind of "Black Raven-5" is coming out. The author
requests a certain amount from the company/etc. that distributes software according to the above
scheme.
Well, you shouldn’t, Vyacheslav Mednonogov deserves the ordered software!
Ie. and SU (SpectrumUnion) and all, all, all publications can and should give him
(if he wishes) an advance for the development of his programs! And he, upon completion of
the work, will give them finished copies. Let other authors do so at their own peril and risk! Let them try not to take on “grand projects” right away.
But let them do what can be done with “little cost” and be in
in demand, and let them work correctly with the press and distributors. Speaking of
traders. I strongly recommend that they form tandems with representatives of SU
in the regions and the network versions received from them, having paid the appropriate money
, be replicated with protection on floppy disks. Once again, I repeat that network
distribution of commercial products will become a reality onlyafter
the development of the appropriate “network protection” technology!

>Naturally, Western innovations will also spread (you can start the experiment
>with them). Releasers now often receive nothing from their release,
therefore they will only be interested in the fact that their versions will be distributed throughout the country. But some amounts (for beer :) can be transferred to them.
Sergey, you already work for Relcom, which is not a free network!
Hmm...but you won’t get anything from them...then you just have to act according to the
same scheme...i.e. not to release everything, but to release either to order or receive
from magazines, which will be included in supplements and for commercial editions of
newspapers.

>Accordingly, magazines, newspapers, etc. will bring in some kind of income.
>(Naturally, the author can refuse remuneration).
Magazines can send out “truncated” network issues over networks... this will be
a kind of “demo” + additional advertising, and commercial issues can
be sent out in the same way, at the request of buyers with corresponding charges
to their accounts! Uff.
I didn’t “cover”, it seems, only demo-makers...Works that won prizes... with them
everything is clear. Those who didn’t...should receive compensation from the distribution of
collections!
“Demos are not frivolous from their birth!” Onlythe authors themselves can, if they want,
declare them as such.
So choose: communism or capitalism, chaos or order and
“playing by the rules.”

>Now about how to interest people in joining the Spectrum support association (i.e., pay membership fees in exchange for fresh software). After all, it may
>turn out that one person per group or even a city will receive the software,
>who will distribute it to others. First of all, the contribution amount should be
small (10 thousand = 2 bottles of beer per month!), i.e. everyone can well
>pay it. Secondly, there must be a system of sanctions: it is necessary to maintain lists of members
of the association, and everyone who has not joined the association and, accordingly, does not want
>to support Spectrum, must feel that he is wrong: his work will not
>be accepted at demo-parties, his letters will not be published in magazines
>distributed by the association, even in Fido his opinion will be taken into account less -
>after all, he did not want to support Spectrum. Greetings will not be conveyed to him in
>releases distributed by the association, etc. And why not pay 10
>thousand in exchange for access to all the latest software?
>
>In short, what’s the idea? Is there a chance?
Let the people choose for themselves...and think about it...maybe there is something in my idea? ;)
