Sorry, 4.2.. Error.

Did anyone ask me?!! Well, to hell with it...
But in general, what is this 5.0 - is it something new or just a

It would be better if they threw a branded one, or something...

From Vitaly Samoylov To All 18 November 1997

The version thrown as 5.0 is not that!!! This is v4.2 (10/11/93)

And I have version 5.0 (04/24/94), it has an is-dos disk formatter, a RAM copier and something else.

Creepy brakes!
It’s faster to format a new disk and copy everything you need onto it.

From Vitaly Samoylov To All 22 November 1997

It is quite possible that someone has already written, I started writing, but did not finish,
since there is no real spectrum and it is lazy, the defragmenter needs a RAM disk
larger, and a high-speed loader with a block saver!
A loader for defragmented files already exists, but it is demanding ROM TR-dos.

EM>> remade Doctor.

AL> So it is a proprietary formatter.
What?!! Is the proprietary IS-DOS formatter a remade Doctor? Yes, this is
just nonsense, excuse the harshness.
As an official involved in the release of the infinite formatter
and in general in the removal of protection from the IS-DOS system, I declare:
The first OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED BY THE COMPANY endless formatter, supplied
on system floppy disks IS-DOS version 2.0, was created in my presence
Misha Kondratiev by hacking and editing (it seems MONS)
the original formatter with MASTER DISK IS-DOS. After that, IS-DOS 2.0 disks were sold by me by agreement with the Iskrasoft company for some time on the market in Avtovo, and by the time I went to work at Iskrasoft as the head of the IS-DOS Department, disks with this formatter began to be sold in the company.
Further support and improvement of the formatter, as well as
gradual removal "binding" of all main programs to the format number was
carried out by the chief system programmer of the Department - Alexey Leontiev.

AL> And before there was a limited
AL> number of formattings.

Yes, in versions 1.xx and early 2.0 there was a limit on the number
boot disks that could be created with one copy of the system.

We in St. Petersburg usually look at the creation date of edit+.com
In version isdos 4.5 this file has the date 06/05/96.
Give the creation date of your file edit+.com
And then we will see whether your version is better or worse.
By the way. Does your version have a calendar that, when launched,
displays two months on the screen in a standard calendar view
and a note for a given day.
And do you have a clock that runs correctly?
Maybe there is something else interesting in your version.

Goodbye, Boris.

I officially declare to everyone that version numbers older than 4.5 in Moscow were given to versions
on the radio market in Mitino. Two options:

- one guy is fooling everyone (still) that the original is a virus ;) and
he has the latest ;) At the same time, he very coolly says that it cannot be hacked
(despite the book that was published) and is very difficult to break (an idiot, despite his 49
years). In this version, only the panel palette has been changed. He multiplied and changed version numbers, hiding behind I-Soft. The guy's name is Vladimir (he walks around the market with
a radio station and constantly complains about how hard it was for him to break the palette on the subject
and what a hard life he has, that he has to constantly "break" iS-DOS himself).
Difference: prices are 2-3 times higher than in SLOT.

- assigned a number to my kit (not version - I just _very optimized_ and
rewrote to a friend) - there is a complete set, including: a legitimate full formatter +
graphic printing + a useless optimizer, which SLOT sold ondifferent
disks. Everything, of course, on one floppy disk. The basic
disc-kit was very popular and was widely distributed.

The difference between the second option is the file describing the “hot” control keys from my
origin. If they sold it on the market, it was 2 times cheaper (I didn’t have anything from this and don’t want to have anything).

Personally, observing copyright, I didn’t assign any numbers to versions!!!
Numbers were assigned arbitrarily by sellers in Mitino. Specify the sources for obtaining the subject.

The layout of the base disk is a private matter for any _legitimate_ user. My basic disk has absolutely everything you need for work (except for free
space).

What does it mean “there’s less rustling on the disk...” I don’t understand how this is? And what does
"built-in formatter" mean? Where is built-in?
And in general, there is a good way to determine the newness of the system, regardless of
the left numbers - look at the creation date of the main files (just not
IS_DOS.SYS), but some frequently changed utilities, for example to_msdos.com or
filecopy.com and compare which system is implemented later.
IMHO some lamer will be smart enough to get into the text file of the start
menu and transfer 2.0, 3.0, etc. to 5.0, 6.0, 21.0, etc., but for sure no one can change the dates of most fileswill think of it.

From Vadim Yeliseyev To All 24 November 1997

The only WORKING program on this topic is arzt+.com, it is on any
IS-DOS basic disk, starting with version 3.0 (or 3.5). But it does not defragment
the disk, but simply fills “holes” in disk space, moving free
blocks to the end.
If we are talking about a program unfinished by Sasha Demidov at one time called speedisk.com (or speed.com I don’t remember what it was called), then it
is in the form in which was abandoned after Sasha left the Department
INWORKABLE and can cause the loss of information on your disks.
In short, whoever dares to run this program is to blame...
Although, maybe nothing will happen, we also didn’t notice right away and
we were able to sell five floppy disks before this program was taken off
from sale :-(
In general, writing a disk defragmenter is a problematic thing, especially for
working with large devices, e.g.with a screw (IMHO, but for floppy disks it is not needed at all) - the main problem is the lack of memory and a very large waste of machine time. It is unlikely that anyone will want to defragment the disk for
30-40 minutes; indeed, it is easier to rewrite it.

With best wishes,
Vadim

to change file structure of the device
(faster access to files (all files
are located on the device in sequential
pieces, all free pieces are collected at the end of the device

The program is executed in three stages:
- information about the device is collected;
- device blocks are rearranged;
- the device is reassembled.

After starting the program, appears menu:

1 - with preservation of the structure
all files on the device remain in the same
form in which they were, i.e. Continuous
files are converted to continuous, segmented
to segmented.
2 - without saving the structure
all files on the device are converted
to continuous.

During the process of rearranging blocks, the following is indicated:
- how many blocks need to be processed;
- how many blocks have been transferred.

Features of the program:
- device being processedprogram,
must be assigned as system
- if the device has bad blocks
(with the bad extension), the program does not work
and displays the error "NO file name with
extension bad";
- the program works with devices up to
40,000 blocks;
- if the computer crashes during operation
the device gets damaged, so it is not recommended
to run the program on faulty devices and
poor technology;
- if the boot disk is compressed, then after
compression it remains bootable;
- the program can run for quite
a long time (information is collected block by block).

No, it’s turning out great, huh? In order to speed up defragmentation, first
rewrite the entire disk onto an electronic one, then run the defragmenter, then
rewrite it back - IMHO, even taking into account the track copier type a??a.com
during this time you can just as easily do without a defragmenter -
copying to another disk or to the same RAM. And there will be fewer operations, and the files
will be more intact, that’s for sure.

Here is an excerpt from my article published in one of the issues of ZX NEWS:

IskraSoft, IS-DOS Department

News in the world IS-DOS.
══════════════════════
(article for the ZX News newspaper)
7/24/1997

Hello, dear readers!
B In today's issue of the newspaper we will introduce you to some new programs written for the IS-DOS system, and also tell you a little about further prospects for its development.

To begin with, we would like to inform you that the newest version of the IS-DOS system today is the branded versions IS-DOS 4.5 Classic and IS-DOS 4.5 Chic
manufactured in the Software Department of the company
IskraSoft (St. Petersburg). In this version, a number of improvements were made to the system, which made it possible to expand its functionality compared to earlier versions, some programs were improved and new ones were added. Today we will tell you about these innovations.

The development of the IDE hard drive controller, carried out jointly with the Nemo company (St. Petersburg), revealed some inconveniences associated with the operation of the system with large disk devices. In particular, someProblems in older versions of the system were caused by large directories (16 blocks in size), therefore, in the new version, appropriate changes were made to the system core, as a result of which working with such directories became possible. This allows you to store up to 128
files or subdirectories in one directory.

Working with large directories has caused another serious, although
not noticeable at first glance, problem, namely: after deleting a large number of
files from the directory, the directory itself remains
the same size as it was, which causes unnecessary waste disk
space. Let's say that the directory contained 120 files (directory size
120/8=15 blocks), 90 of them were deleted, therefore, to store the remaining 30 files, a directory with a size of 4 blocks, not 15, would be sufficient.
New utility kit-kat.com (not to be confused with
Kitekat) allows you to “trim” unnecessary
part of the directory, freeing up this
“lost” disk space.

In addition, the arsenal of system utilities
IS-DOS 4.5has been replenished with two more useful programs - netto.com and
eradicat.com.
Program netto.com analyzes the current (currently open in the current panel) directory and prints the number of subdirectories in it, the total number of files and the total size of it all in blocks.
Program eradicat.com allows
correctly (unlike the utility
remote.com) delete the directory along with
all its contents - both files and and
subdirectories.

The program for printing texts has undergone major changes. The most important innovation is the ability to work with prn files, including those prepared on other computers.
What is a prn file? This is a file that results from redirecting codes arriving at the printer to a disk drive and contains all the codes that must be sent to the printer when printing - symbols, control codes, graphics, etc. This improvement to the system opens up new, truly inexhaustible possibilities for collaboration between the ZX Spectrum and the Spectrum. professional computers.
Now it has become possible on any computer (including IBM) to prepare
material for printing (picture, text using graphic fonts, typographical original layout, etc.), merge
it into a prn file, using the driver for
your printer, and print it later
on the ZX Spectrum WITHOUT LOSS QUALITY!

True, this system required some
changes in the IS-DOS print driver standard, so the version4.5 comes with new drivers, and drivers from older versions will not work in the new system.

In addition, the new system has significantly expanded the built-in USER menu.
Thanks to the serious work done by
Alexander Wolf, it almost completely replicates the Norton
Commander shell menu. In addition to these changes we have described, there are a number of innovations in the system, which we cannot talk about here due to the limited size of the article, so we refer you to the text files whatsnew.txt, update.txt and news*.txt, located in the directory
\ADVERTISING\ of the system disk of the new version of
IS-DOS. In these files, which can
also be seen by selecting the READ ME option in
the IS_DOS 4.5 boot menu, you will see
more complete information about changes in
the system.

Now let's move on to the description of new
programs for IS-DOS:

3. PC KEYBOARD - driver for the IBM PC XT keyboard controller from Nemo (compatible with Profi) with the correct placement of large and small Russian letters b, zh, x, yu, e, ъ. This is made possible thanks to
the new tt_x+.key driver, which allows
to use the CS+SS key combination as
the third SHIFT. PC keyboard controller
Profi/Nemo transcodes scan codesPC keys into ZX keyboard codes and their combinations. Thus, small letters from the above list are defined as
combinations SS+?, and large letters - as CS+SS+?
with SS being inserted automatically by the controller. Thus, it is possible to place almost all “non-standard”
letters on the keys on which they
are depicted and provide additional
convenience when typing texts. The new driver, together with a code table called x+kay.tab, is included in the basic package of IS-DOS 4.5.

There are three types of defragmentation:

1. Converting fragmented files into unfragmented ones.
2. Optimizing empty space.
3. Both and other.

Naturally the first one is the fastest, you can limit yourself to it, but somewhere around once
a month - the third method!
Now in practice: you need your own, very fast loader for any sectors
(128,256,512,1024), which in principle already exists, but There may be incompatibilities
with different versions of trdos. A certain amount of RAM, the more,
the better!
Using an intelligent analyzer for a defragmenter (This is for the third type)! Which is more difficult, but possible!
Then the time will be limited by the speed of writing to the disk. But
reliability will decrease! That is, dependence on power failures, the drive controller.

P.S. The third type is for speed, since the 1st then the 2nd is slower than
immediately together!

TV> almost all full, but there is room for something else to be added there
TV> to add (for example, a terminal for chaos) what I need for this is a whole
TV> format the disk again, transfer everything, etc.???

In this case, the classic solution is to use the arzt+.com utility from any
basic disk (it seems starting from 4.0) SQUEESE option. It quite quickly
gathers all the free areas on the disk into one large area at the end.
And the defragmenter has absolutely nothing to do with it.

With best wishes,
Vadim

VY>> 5.0 is actually OLDER than the latest proprietary version,
VY>> which is sold under © 4.5!!!

VF> Well, I don’t know how old it is, but it is much better than 4.2,
VF> faster and more convenient. In my opinion, even the editors are different there..

^^^^^^^^ - but how can it be faster?

And 4.2 is also not ours... In general, it seems, 3.0 according to the numbering of the Slot.
HERE IS THE LIST OF BRAND NUMBERS:

1.0
1.1
1.5
2.0
3.0
3.5
4.0
4.5

ALL! Approximate correspondence to the “Slot” numbering: 4.2 = 3.0; 5.0 = 3.5
Latest version (4.5 according to branded numbering) The slot was never
sold at all (didn’t have time before it collapsed).
So let’s not confuse ours with not ours, branded with purchased
anywhere (i.e. at a flea market). According to my information, now in Mitino there is not a SINGLE person officially selling IS-DOS. So there’s nothing to talk about here!

And in general, IMHO it’s time to stop “measuring your pussies”, like “but my
IS-DOS is better.” There is a branded registered product and there is a lefty one, which is sold by pirates, and even after delving into it (I’m not talking about Slot,
but about those “craftsmen” selling on the market).
PS: This is not an attack, but a specific proposal.

With best wishes,
Vadim

By all indications, such a “new IS-DOS” can be made from anyone with a simple command

cache.com /32 (or not 32, but more).

The cache size simply increases due to other memory and that's all. In proprietary
IS-DOS, the default size is 27 blocks. This value was considered optimal
after lengthy tests - and the programs all fit into memory, and the cache
was of sufficient size.

VY>> And what does “built-in formatter” mean, where is built-in?

Ha-ha-ha!!! Well, you made me laugh... ;-) Was it difficult to write the menu yourself? That's what she's foris intended to be written by the users themselves.
And we once had FORMAT DISK there, too, but then we removed it ourselves
after several lamer clients in a row decided to try “how does it

This is because he is a leftist. We didn't create a formatter in TR-DOS - why? And all sorts of pirate perversions are by no means a reason to consider the system
unsuccessful.
And about the Slotovsky separate formatter, I have already expressed my opinion here.
I was always against this idea and I regret that I could not prevent it (it was released just before my appointment at Iskrasoft).

So it’s definitely old... What are we talking about?

VK> But _SLOT himself wrote that the fifth one - how not to believe?

And who should be trusted more, the authors or the distributors?
For some reason, there is a funny opinion that IS-DOS wrote Slot, and
we - so, on the side... I wonder what's the matter - in the long-term Soviethabit
that all the main enterprises are located in Moscow, and only branches in St. Petersburg?

By the way, when I was still working at the market in Avtovo in the PENCRAFT group, we were
several told that “... yes, yes, we know, you have a head
enterprise in Moscow, but here there is only a branch...”, :-0

Yes, yes, this is exactly that the option I was talking about. It would have a very unpleasant effect - at random unpredictable moments it would corrupt files, and could even kill the disk. Although some discs could have been processed without
damage. Sasha Demidov never had time to correct it - he left the Department,

On a RAM disk, even with track-by-track copying from/to disk, this will take no less than 40-50 minutes.

All this is generally somewhat strange. I rolled the ISDOS disk through ADS and noticed the format. Then I formatted the disk using FFORM, built a sector-by-sector copier myself
and received a copy of the system disk.
Moreover, I threw out the final sector with a size of 512 bytes and a random number, and
the system did not lose its functionality...

Then abba.com and I made my life a lot easier.

Even then, when the “infinite formatter” came, I I still formatted
