Interview

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Peter Davidov To All 18 November 1997

Good evening!

I would like to ask dear Ekhi subscribers if they know such a magazine as
"Game World Navigator"? Most likely, most people don’t know, so, in a nutshell, this is one of the main Russian magazines dedicated to computer games on the PC.
So, some time ago we decided to talk about the Spectrum. The result was a large review article, which described in detail the history of the creation of this computer, its architecture, as well as famous games of the past. The result
was material from which readers will learn what a wonderful computer the Spectrum was. But not a word has been said yet about the fact that even now he not only has not died, but, on the contrary, is more alive than all the living. Therefore, we decided to postpone the publication of this article and talk to those who still have this computer at home. Below are the questions to which we hope to get answers. If you have
something to say, then do not be lazy and write your answers to me via Netmail. When
preparing the material, everyone who took part in this interview will be indicated.
Of course, provided that you do not ask not to use your name.
Here are the questions on which we would like to know your thoughts:

1) Are there any companies (names are not at all necessary) producing
_now_ Spectrum-compatible cars? And if so, isn't itIs this activity a violation of copyright?
2) How widespread are Spectrum-compatible machines now? Let's say how many
there are approximately in Moscow? Throughout Russia?
2) As you know, the development of new programs for the spectrum does not even think
of stopping. What programs (including games) are being created now? Who are they
designed for (especially non-game programs)?
3) Is it only in Russia that new software is being produced now?
Are there relatively large companies in the West that are currently developing
at least some software for the Spectrum? Of course, it is not at all necessary that the company deal _exclusively_ with this. The very fact of its presence is interesting.
4) The Spectrum even has its own modem. Is it possible to get
access to the network using it? Say, to Fido or the Internet?
5) What tasks can the Spectrum perform and are there any?
6) Is it only the high price of IBM-compatible machines that stops you from replacing the
Spectrum on a PC?
7) For what purposes, besides games, do you use the Spectrum?
8) “Yesterday” the Spectrum was the most popular home computer. How do you see the Spectrum today and tomorrow?
9) Is the architecture of the Spectrum evolving in any way? Is any improvement being carried out? Even in makeshift conditions...
10) How do you rate the numerous Spectrum emulators on PC? ForWhat do you think a PC owner might need right now on a Spectrum?

> Many thanks in advance to all those who will take part in the preparation
> of our material and will find a minute of their time to answer these
> questions. Thank you all again.

P.S. I would really like to personally communicate with game developers. If you have someone's fidish or e-mail addresses, please tell us them. If one of the developers themselves is reading this, then we would be very glad to have your consent to chat about creating games for the Spectrum.

With respect, Petr Davydov
