New graphic editor (A. Savichev-1;)

From Sergei Novikov → To All 12 January 1998
Hiya Andrew! Answering a message marked with the following:
From: Andrew Savichev (2:5020/400); To: All;
Date: Sunday, 01/11/98; Time: 14:44;
Subj: "New graphic editor (S. Novikov-2)"
>> No one even discussed what was impossible to implement. :)
AS> Speculatively predicting “what is impossible on the Spectrum” is very difficult.
AS> And then, what configuration to take if the usual pent-128 with one flop -
AS> is one thing, if not... and I suspect that’s what we’re talking about ;)
Of course, the editor should work on 128. Otherwise, it will simply be unprofitable
to do it.
>> I said that if you start making an editor now, you will finish it
>> when there will be a great darkness of them. All sedators currently being prepared have already
>> been made for a very, very long time.
AS> Therefore, more information is needed about:
AS> 1) who is doing it;
AS> 2) under what computer;
AS> 3) a brief description;
AS> 4) degree of readiness;
AS> 5) modernization plans.
I think it is clear that now it is important who will be the first to release the coolest editor,
therefore, divulging opportunities or somehow shining in public is the same as
bringing on your competitors and giving them valuable ideas. And what you
listed will not give anything to other authors. Unless, again, important
information, which in a competitive environment should notpop up.
Competition includes attempts to remove, outstrip or
suppress an opponent striving for identical goals.

AS> This is a minimum, minimum, but it would still be better if the authors
AS> were more open to collaboration. And I’m writing all this because I myself suffer from the lack of tools, including the graph. editor and animator, Vladimir is aware ;)
AS> What do you order “Special Function” to do?
What don’t you like about AS?
>> So these 2 thousand users (although there will be more of them) need a good
>> editor, and not what some are doing now. First of all, you need
>> ease of use, which I have not noticed yet (except for AW)...
AS> I do not belittle the merits of AW, although I know about it firsthand. As for the number
AS> of “living”, especially “civilized” (buying something, writing somewhere
AS> or communicating with someone) Spectrum users, neither I nor, IMHO, you
AS> know for sure, my numbers are nothing more than a rough proportional estimate:
AS> the number of networkers (100 Spbzxnet+200Mskzxnet+200FIDO+ 200regionszxnet ) x K
AS> Someone is on several networks at the same time. Because Moscow is the champion in the number of modems per capitapopulation, and according to you, in Moscow there are about
AS> 500 living Spectrumists, then I took this K to be a little more than
AS> 2.5. Let traders or authors refute me if any of them
AS> managed to sell more than 2.5 thousand copies of their programs ;) In general, if
AS> all traders responded and reported approximately the sales volumes of the most
AS> popular software (order), then it would be possible to calculate more accurately.
Also say that each user buys a program for himself. Programs are usually
taken one per group, or even per city (if the city is small).
>> AS> Yes, by and large, users don’t need it, only
>> AS> software/demo/intro/remakers,
>>
>> These are the majority. There are only a few gamers left.
AS> Well... yeah? :) Where then are the hundreds of units of software products every year? Where
AS> are dozens of magazines and newspapers, where is the sea of system software and
AS> precious deposits of amazing games?
Do you think 5000 users are enough for this? A third of the groups are engaged in
idleness, the other third makes demos, the third works on the table ;)
>> AS> and “not underground”, like CGS ;).
>>
>> CGS? I don’t remember something like that 8|
AS> I appreciate your humor. God willing, you'll see ;)
Ahh... I could shorten it like CNS ;)
>> So everything else, exceptThere are already plenty of graphic editors. A
>> Art Studio, as you know, will be 13 years old this year.
AS> See above... about my torment without an editor.
AS nothing, but it could be better. Which we will see soon ;)
>> AS> Most, in fact, “write on the table”...
>>
>> That’s why I don’t understand why Brain Wave should write its own editor without
>> looking at others.
AS> And I’m just for it! and not only so that they would look... but also so that
AS> “harness into the common cart.” Maybe it was Brain Wave who came up with
AS> something that others had never dreamed of.
To write an editor because of a couple of new ideas... It’s inhumane :)
>> And what can software makers agree on? What options can I insert into my
>> editors? Who should abandon theirs, and who will continue the business? Dead number.
AS> Let them speak out themselves... otherwise why are we “breaking spears” for them, o’k?
Who should speak out? SOTA is not in the echo, Brain Wave has just started working...
With God's blessing, Sergei Novikov AKA Spirit/STEP

IG> How do points 1, 2, 4, 5 relate to competition?
So point 1 is known so... Avalon, Brain Wave, Bytex, Kuzma Feskov, someone from
Ulyanovsk...
Point 2 too unambiguous - ZX-128.
Point 4 must be learned first-hand, from the authors. And they are not all in Fido.
It’s too early to talk about modernization plans - for this you need to first release
the editor, + look at the capabilities of other editors.
