ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Roman Petrov To All 17 March 1998

Hello! Dear All!

Here's another question that arose: is it possible to connect Subj to the spectrum,
which is used in SB and similar cards on the PC. It
provides quite good opportunities - 9 channels, two/three/four-operator FM synthesis.
If someone has already connected, can they report and share their development?
Or maybe someone wants to connect? Or at least share the information and let us connect ourselves?

With respect, Roman aka Megus of Brain Wave corp.

Oh, please, don’t do this! This tweeter is absolutely nothing sensible because of its DISGUSTING quality. If you are interested in intelligent FM synthesis, then IMHO you should contact RU.MSX for information. I heard the sound of my friend's FM card on this machine. It's just

implementation of this card seemed to be an AdLib with a
completely redone analog part. But the sound was simply incomparable to a pussy! IMHO, if you try really hard, you can get native MSX

P.S. Why are we actually perverted? We also have GS. Or not anymore?

It does not interfere, but why? By the way, the creators of GS promised that its program could supposedly be changed. So, in theory, you can do without OPL. And again, while we're on the subject, where is the promised 1 MB of memory?

From Roman Petrov To All 24 March 1998

Well, I wouldn’t say that AY is a little better, but much better, BUT only in
in terms of melodic instruments. In terms of drums, the FM-Chip is no good, so if you connect it, then you need to make a parallel
sound of AY and FM-Chip, so that, for example, you can put drums and bass on AY, and everything else on FM, since it will cope with this very well.
And there are more channels on Subj, whole ones 9.

And the difference is what to hang - WT or GS? The same thing - digitized

You need to ask Flash - they were the first to implement such a bloat in our country (and they were the ones who established the standard for the second pair of ports). In general, somewhere over the hill (and a very close foreign country at that) they connected as many as 3 AY. I read this in some Polish/Slovak demo. Judging by the effects, the demo was quite old.

I willingly believe that it is not wasted, and that the program can be changed, but
is it possible to write a software synthesizer at 12 MHz and also channels

For reference, MIDI uses not 128 samples, but approximately 170-180
(127 GM instruments, and the rest are drums). Taking into account the fact that even with lousy sound (as on AWE 32), these samples take up 512 kilobytes (for comparison, the GM set for GUS is about 7 megabytes). Will you find such volumes in GS? But to play MIDI, the polyphony should be not 4 or 8 channels, but at least 24, preferably 32, or more. By the way,
MIDI does not limit the number of channels, it is theoretically all 16 MIDI Channels,
all notes are pressed on each of them (like 8 octaves).

From George Shepelev To All 9 April 1998

Done a long time ago. But!

1) I don’t recommend using the 580 series - the performance is not enough.
Still, MIDI is 31250 baud...

2) Optocouplers are needed for the full implementation of the current loop. AOT101BS showed very good
results, although in a somewhat “overloaded” current
phototransistor mode.

PF> I apologize, but what else?

Yes, everything is on _her_ ;) From my point of view, copying modules (while
making sure that their size does not exceed a certain figure) from a screw
onto Spectrum floppy disks in order to listen to them on GS is a rather stupid
thing, besides I don't have that many floppy disks; I don't have enough for programs/games. So I definitely don’t need GS.

From Andrey Khristov To All 10 April 1998

AK> Actually the same serial port. I’ve never seen a MIDI mode for COM1/COM2 in the bios setup
AK>?

Mmmm...
When they say RS232 or COM, the immediate question is - which one? (1-4)
When they say COM2 - it’s immediately clear what address and IRQ
When they say MPU401 - it’s immediately clear that this is a midiport with native addresses.

I repeat once again: OPL/WT does not use any “Serial” transactions and just
sticks out in the I/O space.

EO> there should be a midi output... I’m not sure, but it seemed like it was. Even from

EO> And to achieve the required quality, samples should be sampled at 44 kHz.
EO> Well, this is of course too much. Therefore, it is better at 22 kHz. And it turns out that for the price

IMHO 44 kHz is not so mediocre.

AK> WT does not use serial ports. It hangs _instead_ of the OPL chip and

This is on sound cards from IBM. But in fact, this is the name of an ancient

The MIDI port for the Spectrum works great on the 8251, but getting them
is not easy. Although lighter than the Z80SIO...

If you hook them up like a simple buzzer, then really so.

And if you need to make a full-fledged MIDI interface, then You can’t do without a

do you want some advice? You go to ao. GAMMA, and you take the Zilog catalog from them. there
there is a mikrukha on which OPL is implemented and compatible with SB2.2...

This is, of course, good, but the microscope costs a lot of money. Again, you can’t insert it onto a divorced board just like that. But the PLM is already there and it’s not a fact that the FM-Chip
is not implementable on it.
Now the Sprinter has already got a sound card with 16 voices, the one that

It depends on what is meant by quality - if distortion/spectrum, then
FM is cleaner, still the original (I mean purely synthetic sounds,
rather than attempts to obtain the sound of a snare drum using FM synthesis methods :)
The naturalness of the sound of live instruments is WT, but here
the quality in the first sense strongly depends on the digitization parameters and
your deep IMHO ;) is more relevant to WT (my deep IMHO :)

Everything. Only the PLM is still not rubber.

From George Shepelev To All 18 April 1998

MR> Why? If we do not have the task of implementing complete MIDI,

Why do you need MIDI at all? For me - to listen to high-quality sound.
Therefore, a good sound module... In order to prevent the ports from burning out
due to accidental pulling out of the cord, an opto-isolator is needed. And it’s hard to get rid of interference
from a computer without it...

AK> No, after all, you don’t need to make a sound on the alter.

Almost forget about it =)
Yamaha does not engage in retail or small wholesale sales of its products. You will have to
conclude an agreement, etc. It will take a lot of time. It’s easier and I think it’s cheaper to build
(port) ready-made versions of sound cards.
