What the big press writes...

ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»

From Vyacheslav Mednonogov To All 24 January 1998

Get Msg, All!

So, finally, “Game World Navigator” #9 has reached St. Petersburg. And
indeed, on pp. 48-51 there is a large article about the Spectrum (author Peter Davydov).
The first part of the article is traditionally devoted to history. There is no point in citing it, because every self-respecting Sinclairist knows the history of the Spectrum + K. Sinclair by heart :))
The second part has a rather loud title "ZX Spectrum. The path to the future." In a benevolent manner (although P. Davydov is famous for his devastating reviews :) it tells about the present of Spectrum in Russia and the prospects for its development. I won’t retell it (whoever needs it will read it himself), I’ll give a few
quotes:
“...our country took the baton in its production. Let’s start with the fact that
now in St. Petersburg not only mass production of Spectrum-compatible machines “Scorpion” is underway, but also the development of a computer
of the new generation “Sprinter” is being completed.
“Next - more... in Moscow now there is a whole network of spektrumists,
ZX-Net. It numbers approximately 600 people"
"...unfortunately, it is not yet possible to access the Internet from the Spectrum, but who
knows what will happen in about six months..!"
"There are quite a few Spectrumists in our country. According to the most approximate estimates, in the CIS
there are currentlythere are four to five thousand. In Moscow there are approximately 500 people
networkers - 600? %>, in St. Petersburg there are more than a thousand..."
"What conversions are there? UFO 1 and 2, DOOM, Warcraft, Mortal Kombat... Among the original games, “Star Legacy” especially stands out. Soon
there should be a game... "Black Raven"..."
"...new software is being actively created for the Spectrum.
Mainly for working in networks."
"...an international festival is held annually, which attracts
Spectrumists from all over the world... in August 1998, a festival of
Russian Spectrumists, FunTop 98, will be held in Moscow. We strongly advise you not to miss - you will learn
a lot of new things."
The following is a list of the most famous electronic publications on the ZX.
The article ends with a statement from the “famous Moscow spektrumist
Sergei Novikov”:
“It is impossible to create in the full sense of the word on the PC. You can't achieve anything alone, and the released program is lost in the crowd of the same or even better ones.
Work on the Spectrum is needed by others, they are respected for it. On the Spectrum it is easier to achieve fame and respect from others. Everyone here is our own..."
At the end, the author expresses gratitude to "all the spektrumists who took part
in the discussion. They were: Sergei Novikov, Roman Alexandrov,Wladimir Bulchukey,
Andrew Savitchev, Eugene Tukaev, Vladimir Kacev, Alexey Ivanov, Tim Kelly,
Alexey Logotin"
Well, it’s nice that the big press remembers the little Spectrum. It’s doubly
pleasant that such an article appeared in the "Game World Navigator" - in
the thickest and most prestigious magazine, dedicated to gaming software.

Game.exe, however, will be more prestigious... Although, maybe not thicker ;) In general,
"there" the prestige of mass advertising publications is easy to assess...If a magazine does not
have its own website where you can read it, therefore it lives off the circulation

You, as a journalist, know better... IMHO, you say so because you know all the
material. But the article is intended for a completely different audience.

Not so many. The number of Moscow spektrumists is mixed up and some
demo versions of toys (Doom, WarCraft) are presented as complete. In general, there are no attacks (!) and comparisons with the PC, everything is presented as it is (!). IMHO, only
it was necessary to make the ratio of history/today not 3:1, but 1:3. But PD soap

I may not have accurately grasped the shade of your phrase, and just in case I want to
make a clarification: I did not clasp my hands. I'm just really annoyed by phrases like 'of course, Spectrum code is the most efficient code in the world! and Spectrum coders are the best scribblers of efficient code in the world!' and
the word 'of course' is obligatory. and 2 exclamation marks are desirable. This is childhood, forgive me. but otherwise I'm completely loyal to Specky :)

Are you addressing me? Where did I “ignite” what? I gave a logical argument:
"The lack of machine resources forces you to hone your coding skills." Do you have any objections to it? Or will we object in general terms, remember kindergarten
?

MF> trezvyx znayushix lyudei.

How do people still not understand that the art of programming consists far
not in “assembling” applications in Java and cramming features into them without regard to resources
of the user's machine, but also in "polishing" your creation, eliminating glitches,
optimizing for speed and size? Shall we compete in demagoguery?

What does “the art of programming in general” have to do with it?We are talking about _coding_ -
the art of licking code, the art of programming at the level of processor commands
and, in fact, the codes of these commands. It is stupid to compare a real-life programmer with a coder - the first will _always_ lose in speed and size of the finished program, the second - in the time spent on development, and the more complex the project, the more time it will take the coder. So you need to compare (?) coders -
moreover, pisishny never had to deal with Spectrum and other
microcomputers (this is clearly not you ;), in general, start coding at least at
a good quarter.

MF> S drugoi storony - lyudei kotorye voobshe niche osobogo iz sebya ne

Well, what does this passage have to do with the encoder level? What does he
prove/refute? Although it’s clear... there are no arguments, let’s move on to “who are YOU?”...

You start with how, according to my theory, the dispute should have ended. Which
needed to be proven.

From George Shepelev To All 26 February 1998

Naturally. It's just that different processor command systems/architecture
systems require completely different styles of writing programs. We
mean programs in Assembly.
It is enough to try after the Z80 to write an _effective_ program
on i486 or PIC (two extremes) to feel it in your own skin...
It’s another matter when a programmer “turns up his nose” at Assembly and uses
exclusively high-level languages, without even trying to understand how his
program will work. Often, programs written by such “professionals”
are terribly slow, no optimizing compiler can help...

the experience gained at the institute to the Spectrum platform, then you can do it on another
(since you know the theory), but if you got to this point on your own... I'm afraid, on
another platform you will have to start over.

Good luck ! Evgeny.

Screw you!
this only applies to demo/Games things.
Give an analogy on the ZX for an algorithm for optimizing the search for a server on the Internet, or
say, optimizing the search and classification of star clusters in photographs from
some radio telescope.
And what are you you say that it does not depend on a specific machine - this is nonsense. Of course, there is some truth in it if we say that you work everywhere in ASMA. But on the PC there are multiplications with one command via SAP, and working
on it, you will rely on this command and
use it without any special losses in optimization.
And on the ZX, the implementation of a similar task will require either elaboration
of the algorithm itself, to get rid of multiplications, or optimization
of exactly these multiplications (tables, loops, shifts, etc).
in some machines it is enough for the video processor to set three-dimensional coordinates,
the color and brightness of a specific point, but on
ZX? - optimization of this process...
Continue?
As a result, we come to the finale - on each specific machine, optimization
has to be done differently.
(For example, have you seen the demo of the game "CITADEL" by Stalker? So,
if the Spectrum had not eight points per byte, but a byte per point, then
the constructionscreen would be completed _faster_ by about a quarter.)

Please tell me when the threes, fours, stumps appeared? I mean, have they become accessible to a wide range of people? about five or six years ago, right? So,
there are practically no people who have started to study assembly language in threes, fours, stumps. and about optimization. Nowadays, no one counts clock cycles anymore: a bunch of processors
leads to a bunch of timings. Yes, and it’s not rational. the mastery of optimization is transferred to another plane - to the optimization of algorithms. and here they are perverted... counting cycles - yes, this is necessary on low-power machines. but
this is not what determines the skill of a coder...

Completely lame. ;)) And, after all, the offtopic has gone. ;)) And the secret is simple - if you install Windu, and then don’t breathe on it, then everything is OK. And if at least one application crashes during operation... there is an 80% chance that it will take down the rest and the entire system as a whole. And a lot more, if
you want, I’ll send you the soap.
Topic is closed?

antiofftopic: thank God, THIS hasn’t been written for the Spectrum yet... ;))

Well, don’t... I always have a bunch of things spinning and the emulator works, nothing
doesn’t crash, although I try to install a lot of new things from the software. If you come across a buggy
program - you throw it out after three letters, everything else works...

I have this problem: x128 v.08 does not work in Scorpio mode. Neither under 95, nor
DOS :(

I’m not talking about ASM ;) but about programming technology, because when I got there
I didn’t experience any particular difficulties, and the Spectrum experience was very
helpful.

Does it even show the menu first? If so, then go to 128 BASIC, from it it is standard
run usr 15616 then as usual CAT. Something in the scorpion mode the emulsion with the
floppy disk image is slowing down. (checked) under half a fly, in pre-session).

With all sorts of regards and wishes.

Soap, everything is soap. Here I'll ask just one question - have you seen the memory distribution map in Windows'95? If not, then a big surprise awaits you.
Translated into Spectrum language - “application protection” is the same as in
MagOS - i.e. none.

Do you program using the “top-down” method? Or vice versa? How are you doing with structured programming? Etc. After all, this is what programming technology is. ;)) I know from myself that on the Spectrum the modularity of
programming sometimes comes into conflict with the requirement for the speed of the
program.

with the structural everything is chick-pack ;) even if everything is broken down into procedures, because
as dem in my life I wrote in the amount of one piece, or even
one part (lissajous in x-taz) then the speed does not suffer from this at all, but
it saves memory.

There are glitches, but not as bad as you describe. And as for the coil - you should have one like this. The answer was a blur. BYE.
