Hello, All!

I heard somewhere that there are ways to copy blocks faster than ldir. Is this
possible? If so, how?

See you later...

LDI
LDI
...many LDI...

this is the first method.

the second is

POP HL
POP DE
...all registers - POP.
SP->new address
...all registers - PUSH
PUSH DE
PUSH HL

i.e. block transfer is done something like this: put the stack at the beginning, and load all the registers via POP XX. Then you rearrange
the stack to the place where it is needed, and do PUSH in the reverse order.

p.s. I hope there is no need to explain why this is so? :)

Good Luck...

Yes. LDI, but it's more in bytes. You can use a stack, but this is not always suitable.

From 812/03.00 To All 18 December 1997

RA> For example, several LDIs (numbered by the size of the block being copied).

You can loop several of them, but then the size
of the block must be the same to get something like this:

loop
ldi
ldi
ldi
ldi
jp pe,loop

for this example 18.5 clock cycles per byte, instead of 21 clock cycles with ldir
but the number of bytes must be a multiple of four...

you can, of course, use a stack... the maximum is 10.5 clock cycles, but
de-cranching is needed...

ld hl, <- two bytes to be transferred
push hl
...

if without de-cranching then 12.5 clock cycles per byte:

ld sp,source
pop af,bc,de,hl
exx
pop bc,de,hl
ld sp,destonation
push hl,de,bc
exx
push hl,de,bc,af

imho nowhere faster :(

From Vadim Mihailov To All 20 December 1997

Really cool, but this is already a classic. Max Iwamoto only relied on his skillful
construction of such jokes and held on.

It is worth noting the following: POP and PUSH, in addition to the fact that they work faster, also
with two bytes at once.
It makes sense to expand the cycles
It makes sense to delve into the pearls of the aforementioned Max Iwamoto and above Rst Seven, despite the fact that Max's patented protection (the last one) is difficult to break (STS saved me), so if you don't know the protections, it's worth delving into his older programs.
