The future of spectrum
ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»
From Sergey Gridasov → To All 3 April 1998
Hello to the Spectrum community.
I read the echo for quite a long time and even imbued with the spirit of Spectrum. I understand your
desire to promote this computer. In my opinion, you forgot about one more category of home users - those who know nothing about computers. I suggest
you move towards the Internet. There are a lot of people who don’t want to know anything
about “this iron box” and at the same time want to use the Internet.
Therefore, you have a solution - try to promote a purely Internet computer with
the following characteristics:
1) Graphics 640X480 16bit
2) Ability to connect to TV (Ch + HF)
3) PC - keyboard (for chats)
4) Built-in modem 33600
5) Built-in Flash - ROM browser with JAVA support
6) Mouse
6) Documentation, packaging, appearance, dimensions - everything is at the level
and the role of the home Spectrum can't get out of the computer, so here's an option.

Well, this is no longer Speccy it turns out, but some kind of mutant and, apparently, not on
z80. And why is it even needed, Speccy is unique in itself, and what you
proposed is something like a modem with a built-in keyboard based on Intel xxx mhz.
And if you make it, then how did you write it yourself, it’s an Internet computer, and where is
the Spectrum itself? On it, you can surf the Internet and surf, and no one will remember about the Spectrum.

Well, you blew it...
Poking around with JAVA eats up a lot of resources, even Stump 60 is very slow on this matter.
And the rest is a very resource-intensive thing. WWW does not come with sprites - it needs to be rendered in place.

this is not a chance for the Spectrum, but a chance (very doubtful) for
a completely new system, which is unlikely to be supported by anyone. There -
sprinter is an example of this. It's too late to do such things. and without possessing
the appropriate technologies to make such a thing
cheap, there is no point in even taking it up. no one will buy something unknown for
300$.
Good Luck...

All this is very remarkable, but it will no longer be a Spectrum. Because you forgot
about the amount of RAM equal to 2-4 mega, the screw of 50 megs, etc.
With these bells and whistles, it looks too much like a PC. And if we take into account that the processor in it will operate at 7-21 MHz, which is N times slower than PiTsyushny, that all the development, adjustment, assembly, design of the “appearance” will cost quite a lot of money, then it turns out that it is more convenient (and, perhaps, cheaper) to buy a PC. Moreover, in 2-3 years they will rise in price obscenely.
SG> There is no way for the Spectrum to take on the role of a home computer, so here is the
SG> option.
It is precisely this option that will not work, due to the reasons listed above. So
Spectrum only has the role of a home computer. And only for those
people who value intellectual work even a little.

I think that for Spectrum the chances ended a very long time ago...
Or rather, they didn’t exist at all ;)
And in general, what kind of chances are we talking about? World domination? ;)

This has nothing to do with it. It's just that the phenomenon of spectrism in Russia is a unique phenomenon in Russian computer history. In my opinion, now we need to concentrate
efforts on preserving what we have... For St. Petersburg this is not a problem, but for
Moscow yes... Here. And implementing dead projects with fancy hardware is such a sexopathological term with the letter "O".
Spectrum is valuable because it is compact, etc. Any “thick” bloat kills him more than it prolongs his life. The project will not pay off, and the authors will not do the
next and so on.

The modem has a lot of all sorts of analog devilry that you can’t cram into a PLM.

It’s not about it, it’s about the processor and DSP, which should have a lot of power
speed to work with the signal...
Good Luck...
