ASM and SNS are two big differences! (Response to Viator)
ZXNet echo conference «zx.spectrum»
From Andrew Savichev → To All 23 March 1998
Hi, All!
Publishers are requested to place this letter
in all Spectrumist newspapers and in all
echoes.
First of all, thanks to Vladimir for the letter
from which I learned about the current state
of the ASM project.
For those who do not know, I will say that the ideas of SOS
have also already found practical implementation
and Viator has essentially become the coordinator of ASM.
K unfortunately, he does not have access to the network?
I am surprised why a person does not have a connection to the network when he so needs it
in life. Just a huge wish for him
to connect as soon as possible, because the coordinator
of a network project without connecting to the network
these are “soft-boiled boots.”
Next, Mr. (comrade) Sorry, I don’t know
what he likes best, he mentions in
the documents and demos he sent out that
the ASM project was supported by S. Novikov and
A. Savichev.
This, to put it mildly, does not correspond
to reality.
S. Novikov refused to participate in network
projects, at least for now, and
A. Savichev, being the coordinator
of his own project of the small, network
market SNS, cannot and does not want
to support the ASM project.
It seems to me that my own project is more
progressive! :)
Firstly, I am against multi-platform
projects.
Why? Yes, because Amiga and pussy,
“clinging” to Spectrum usersthey are trying to save their own scenes.
Figuratively speaking, these are governments without
peoples and, by the way, are very reminiscent of
German princes of the 18th century. Despising
Spectrum (Russia) and proud of our
"blue" Amiga-piss blood, we are ready
to "condescend" to the needs of Spectrum.
We, Spectrumists, don't need this!
We do not consider piss (and the Amiga too)
people's computers, with all
the ensuing consequences!
S p e k t r u m - rulez foreva!!!
And nothing else.
So, if you want “our bacon”,
convert to our faith, as Princess of Anhalt - Zerbst
did before becoming Catherine the Great.
Secondly, I am for the market and for competition
in this market, I am categorically against
charging a “subscription” fee for software,
against mailings via “selection” networks.
Remembering the era of grocery orders,
I will say “No software for loading, you give 100%
quality software!”
Thirdly, I am against separating the stage from
the hall! The Spectrumist people are united, we
don’t need Billy and their gangs here.
Spectrum is not some kind of pussy, it is a friend to creative people, and not
a machine for squeezing money out of them!
Therefore, the basis of my projectassociation
regional cell, in which there is a
trader and users, and authors.
And it is not at all necessary for everyone to be
connected to the network at once.
It is enough that the modem and connection to
ZX-NET, FIDO, or Relcom have an N-trader.
The essence of N-software is that on
floppy disks it is practically freeware.
And it will cost buyers
2-6 new rubles per unit of product.
But the buyer has the rights of a buyer,
and the one who received our software as a gift does not.
N-trader is an authorized representative of
SNS in the region. It influences all decisions
of the association in proportion to the number of its
users. Those. in fact, the activities of the Association through N-traders
are managed by N-users.
The headquarters and the Chairman, elected
by direct voting of N-traders
exist in order to:
1) give the SNS Association the status of an official
non-profit organization
(with registration in the appropriate structures);
2) provide direct funds operations;
3) resolve conflicts between
regions by all available means;
4) control the activities of N-traders (based on complaints from N-users,
if there are abuses of authority and negligent performance of duties);
5) take into account indirect financialoperations of the regions.
Everything else is done by N-traders,
authors and users themselves.
This is:
1) holding a network
fair of N-products (demos and descriptions) twice a year;
2) creation and distribution of N-products
3) support of N-products;
4) carrying out direct and indirect financial operations under control Chairman;
5)physically collect and spend money
in the region on the basis of the Charter with
strict reporting and control.
Here I will explain the difference between direct and
indirect financial transactions.
One of the advantages of the network market
is the ability to avoid costs
associated with the transfer of "counter" money
from region to region. Each regional
group accumulates a certain
amount of money in its own account
type of account in Sberbank. These are quarterly membership fees and fees for programs received. This money is given as a fee to regional authors.
If there is not enough money, that is,
a given region has sold products (on a competitive basis more than it bought),
he receives the difference from the headquarters.
Indirect operations are operations
accounting for the volume of sales and purchases of individual
regions, direct operations are the physical
transfer of money.
Nowabout contributions. This is an amount of about
10 rubles. new ones in six months per person.
Half a year because in less time
the authors will not have time to complete and send out
products presented at the fair and
received the required number of applications.
Programs and other N-products you
can receive both for money
(2-6 rubles) and for free.
Since the main thing for the Association
is to pay off with the author, and not rip off your money. The more profitable it is for you, the
more profitable for the Association.
Contributions and other money are spent with
strict accountability. For this purpose, an accountant will work, one for the entire Association. We will pay taxes to the state
and pay a small (5-7% of the volume
of transactions) remuneration to N-traders
and the Chairman. The more people there are in the region and the higher their activity, both as buyers and as sellers, the more remuneration the regional SNS representative receives - this is fair, in my opinion. The larger the entire Association and
the better it works, the more
the Chairman has - this is also fair.
The authors have fees, and the greater the
quality of the product and the more people
in the Association. It is clear that fees for
200 people. total number will be ONE,
and at 1000 - COMPLETELY DIFFERENT :)
And spektrumists have a freshhigh-quality
software, press, etc. with home delivery
and they have an incentive to form a
local network of Spectrums in the region.
I therefore do not see ANY
negative consequences of the formation of SNS.
WELCOME TO SNS!
Send information about the formation of regional
groups mas...@satan.spb.su
Representatives from FIDO and ZXNET will be
announced a little later.

Project for the rescue and development of the scene.
(continued...)
1. HOW IT ALL BEGAN...
For those who do not remember or have not heard
what we are talking about, I will give brief information
about the project and its main idea:
I I in no way claim the right to attribute any merit to myself in the matter of developmentSPECCY and the scenes in the CIS in general.
Everything that is said here and in the first part is only intended to give an incentive to such development...
And so...
It all started about a year ago -
about February-March 1997. Driven by the desire to help the scene and unite all its inhabitants, I wrote an article which I called “Save Our Speccy”. Its general
meaning boils down to the fact that if we want to
preserve the scene, then it is necessary to unite all the “writing” people into a single association that would deal with the global
distribution of their works.
The text was included in our synopsis
"OPERA...", which began to be distributed at the turn of 1997 and 1998.
The article was only a sketch, a general idea, and its main goal was to attract the attention of the scene to this problem.
Which was subsequently achieved.
I was pleased and even a little surprised that the ideas expressed in it were
actively supported by the “residents” of the scene.
Many letters of feedback were received. and
offers of cooperation. In addition, discussions on this topic intensified in the FIDO and ZX networks.
At the same time, the organization of the Amazing Soft Making association was underway. Which was also
planned as one of the ways to implement the project...
Now (end of February 1998) I
decided to collect and summarizeinformation received and tell everyone about your point of view on the development of the project... This is what the entire subsequent text is dedicated to.
Whether you are a stage person or a progressive user, I recommend
you to read everything carefully and thoughtfully,
after all, everything that is written here applies
to you personally. Perhaps these ideas will have a very beneficial effect on the entire computer
scene and on you personally...
And so... Good luck!
2. CURRENT SITUATION ON THE STAGE
Many new and strong teams are constantly appearing that are ready to write excellent software in unlimited quantities. Or is it not so? :-)
The overall level of programs is steadily
growing. This applies not only to the demo scene, but also to all software that appears. Or is everything different? :-)
The main incentive is still
art for art's sake and the excitement of competition. Or am I wrong again? :-)
There is a very favorable unification and cooperation between various
platforms. The former confrontation is being replaced by a merger of different platforms.
Groups do not switch to more powerful machines, but work together on them.
Just look at the fact that now the SPECCY and AMMY scene consists of almost the same groups! I absolutely agree with the opinion expressed on the pages of the magazine "DEJA VU#2" by A.Strelnikov:
"...we don't have AMIGA, PC or SPECTRUM -
but COMPUTERS." After all, the “residents” of all
of these platforms have practically the same
tasks and problems. Therefore, the association
and a similar project are relevant for everyone
immediately. In this regard, it would be logical
to change the name of the project to Save Our
Scene.
And again, do you disagree with me? :-)
And now about some negative features of the scene:
The fragmentation of all producers and
users. Lack of regular information about the current state of affairs on the scene.
Even not everyone who has access to networks (and the vast majority does not have it at all) is not provided with timely information about existing groups and
their activities. Having tens and even
hundreds of electronic magazines and newspapers, the scene cannot give the user a general picture of things. Most demos, novels
for new games, etc. never catches the eye of all users. No one is able to find and re-read this mountain of information. It would be much more convenient, in addition to all other publications, to have one publication entirely dedicated to the projects being created.
Well, you will certainly agree with this! :-)
3. WHAT DO THEY SUGGEST YOU DO YOURSELF
“RESIDENTS” OF THE SCENE
The common thing in the letters and calls received
(huge thanks to everyone!) wasdesire
to support an idea. Everyone was interested in what they could do to implement the project. Everyone considers it extremely necessary to create a distribution network and a community of both software producers and users. Everyone wants to write new programs and receive a well-deserved reward for them. And everyone is interested in the questions “HOW TO JOIN THE ASSOCIATION?” and “WHAT SPECIFICALLY WILL SHE REPRESENT?”.
Here is an excerpt from a letter from ALOS junior from the SPARK group (I think many people know their demo version of the game “TOWNS”):
“We need to create such an organization! The point is that we are in the same hole as many
people, doing something for SPECTRUM!
Now, for example, on "TOWNS" work
stands still, because there is no incentive.
It's just that no one wants to do that, not BRA-
INMAN, not FOX, not A-GraPh, and also me.
But if they knew that we would earn something, then the game would have been made on at a high level..." There are many similar reviews. Almost every group intensifies its activities thanks to payment
of its labor.
Unfortunately, I do not have the opportunity to
participate in the discussion of the project on the network, but thanks to the help of friends from the scene,
in particular SQUIZER from X-PROJECT, I received a fairly complete pictureabout
the discussions going on there.
You may not agree with some of the opinions expressed 100%, but
I understand that everyone who takes part
in the discussion only strives to help
SPECCY, during the discussion it will be possible
to choose the most ideal option.
So, the most specific proposals were put forward by Andrey Savchenko and Sergey
Novikov.
In general, they propose to distribute soft through computer networks, when each user sends
a fixed amount to the company's account and regularly receives new receipts.
All programs are sent to him through
the network. The money received is divided among all the authors whose works are distributed by the association. It is proposed to eradicate piracy and
non-participation in the association (indifference to the fate of the scene) under the threat that all such “comrades” will be deprived of the right to publish in
electronic publications, participate in competitions and
ignored by the scene.
It is impossible not to mention the activities
ASM, which can be aimed at
the good of all project:
The Amazing Software Making
(ASM) Association, one of the organizers of which
I am, has a similar orientation to the project. But for now, it lacks globality and vigorous activity. In addition
in addition, she focuses more on helping
to createprograms than on their distribution. (Assistance consists of coordinating joint projects of many groups and participants and supplying missing materials for programs). I believe that it can be included in the overall project for the development of the stage as one of the centers coordinating the activities of groups, helping to produce new programs that will be distributed by the general stage association.
4. MY COMMENTS ON THIS PROJECT
I agree with most of the words expressed about the project. And I am very grateful to everyone who is involved in it. And here are some things that I would like to clarify
and discuss with you...
Distributing software over the network is very convenient, economical and fast, but you need to take into account the factor that many users do not have access to the network. This is especially true for spectrumators. Therefore, I think that it would be advisable
to distribute programs in parallel
both through electronic networks and by
mail; in the latter case, the amount of the contribution
will be slightly higher, due to the costs of
shipping and floppy disks.
An attempt, as a way to curb the illegal distribution of programs, to limit the rights of the violator on stage - useful, but we have to admit that usually
violators do not strive to participate
in competitions and publish their thoughtsin
electronic publications. The overwhelming majority of illegal users have never taken part in the active life of the scene.
Therefore, the main incentive to participate in the project, to buy software from it, should be the obvious benefits provided by the project. So, all groups should be attracted by the natural opportunity to cooperate and earn a decent wage with their work, and
dear users - the opportunity to quickly and regularly receive all the best
programs "first hand" and the feeling that
their money goes to the authors.
I really liked the proposals
of the above-mentioned Sergei Novikov and Andrey
Savichev about not distributing
programs separately, but sending out monthly collections for fixed fees. Indeed, it is easier and faster to send out standard collections of programs to everyone than to create confusion with orders, different costs and other nonsense. Thus, any person will be able to simultaneously receive all the stage “news” in a month. The only division that I recommend introducing is the division of all software into three categories: games, systems, demos. Naturally, each at its own price. This way you can avoid users' dissatisfaction with the fact that they are being given completely unnecessary
things. Who wants -will subscribe
to all three sections at once, someone will choose only what interests him.
I think that even the “demos” section will have many fans. :-)
The author will receive remuneration from the general fund. At the same time, the amount of payment directly depends on the scale and
quality of the product. And, of course, it depends on how many participants the project will have.
Regarding the fact that you will receive collections, even without knowing exactly their contents, to some extent buying a “pig in a poke”, we can say the following - in any case - this will be exactly the best that comes out on stage. Also, you will always have an idea of the content of the programs from the advertising publications of the project. And in general, the creators of soft are not masochists and are not going to cut the branch they are sitting on - they are primarily interested in creating only high-quality work and in the shortest possible time. :-)
Nobody wants to write endless databases and spreadsheets; it’s much more interesting to write toys, videos, demos! :-) :-) :-)
So far, no specific
proposals have been made about who exactly will undertake the organization and coordination of the project's activities. Of course, one person cannot cope with this. And in general,
everything is in your own hands! FromThe success of the idea and, in many ways, even the fate of the scene in the CIS depends on whether you support this idea!
So... The first concrete proposals:
5. SPECIFIC PROPOSALS
One way or another, someone needs to
take everything into their own hands. To be honest, I have no particular desire to do this,
but, fearing that no one will decide to take on such responsibilities, I agree to coordinate, at this stage, the founding of an association in support of the scene.
Don't you agree? Do you want and can
do everything better? - In this case, I will gladly agree that you should be the SOS coordinator! After all, I am
an artist, a coder and a little bit of a publicist :-),
and not a producer and manager. But someone
has to take the first step, and not mark time
in place, expressing contradictory opinions, but not doing anything.
So. I propose to participate in the writing of the charter and in the discussion of all the nuances. First of all, I ask you, yes, yes, exactly YOU! send me (if you thought $10, then you confused me with someone else :-) a simple application stating that you or
your group are ready to participate in SOS. You can send it in free form, or you can
in the form of a questionnaire:
1. FIRST NAME/SURNAME/NAME/GROUP:
2. EXACT AND DETAILED ADDRESS+TELEPHONE:
3. ACTIVITIES ON STAGE:
4. IS A PROJECT LIKE SOS NECESSARY??
5. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO GET BY PARTICIPATING IN THE PROJECT (NEW PROGRAMS OR/AND DISTRIBUTION OF YOUR OWN PROJECTS):
6. YOUR OBJECTIVE OPINION ABOUT THE ACCEPTABLE
PRICE FOR THE MONTHLY COLLECTION OF PROGRAMS
FOR EACH OF THE NOMINATIONS (GAMES, SYSTEMS,
DEMOS). PLEASE INDICATE THE AMOUNT
THAT YOU ARE READY TO PAY AND BE REASONABLE
AT THE same time. AMOUNT OF DECREES -
IN US DOLLARS:
7. WHAT PLATFORMS PROGRAMS DO YOU WANT TO ACQUIRE/CREATE:
8. IF YOU INTEND TO DISTRIBUTE
YOUR WORKS THROUGH THE ASSOCIATION,
DO YOU GUARANTEE THEIR HIGH QUALITY
AND WHAT APPROXIMATE AMOUNTS FOR
YOUR WORKS (LIST), YOU WANT
GET:
9. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO WISH AND OFFER
TO THE Save Our Scene PROJECT:
10. DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE REALITY OF THE PROJECT
(YES/NO): :-) I AM YES! :-)
This will be the best way to determine all aspects of the development of the project. And, most importantly, it will give an accurate idea of the current state of affairs. This is not yet an official registration. It can be carried out only when the charter is ready and all the nuances have been discussed. This is only
the first step towards the goal!
Of course, I cannot guarantee that
the requests of all those who wrote will be satisfied, but your opinion will definitely be taken into account and
will influence the final results.
Also, I cannot promise thatI will answer all letters - this is physically impossible. Therefore, if you send an answer
on disks, I do not guarantee that I will return them
to you back! I apologize in advance!
Send your answers in any form convenient for you, you can answer the questionnaire not briefly, but, on the contrary, in more detail and comprehensively (on both sides
of a sheet or on double-sided disks :-).
Now some more nuances:
I think it would be advisable to add
to the project and ASM, as I already did proposed.
In addition to distribution, it is necessary to help
the authors themselves create their projects.
I attach the preliminary charter of the ASM association
to this text. Interesting
Your opinion on this matter too. By the way,
some of the beta clauses of the ASM charter
can be used as
basic for SOS.
Important and controversial aspects that
need to be discussed are: coordination
of the association’s activities with the laws in force in the CIS, the method of transferring money from users to producers and from producers to to authors,
the best ways to send programs
both by mail and through electronic networks, criteria for selecting soft and estimating the amount paid to authors, what producers of the association will receive for their work and much more...
One way or another, the project needs to be advertised and introduced to itusers. Even our demo "HALLUCINATIONS IN
OPERA" can be considered an advertising product. After all, thanks to her, many became interested in the project and inspired me to continue this idea, instilled optimism in me! THANKS! Therefore, all your actions to develop the project will be extremely desirable - from writing advertisements to simply talking about this topic with friends. Act now!
Just because we live in countries with dumb
governments and dismal economic
situations does not mean that we cannot
do everything to make our favorite business
prosper! :-)
And one more thing... If you are ready to engage
directly in the activities of the association,
if you value the stage and want to act for the benefit of it and yourself by becoming a producer of the project - contact me.
I will give you the results of the survey,
drafts of the charter and other material!
After all, I am only ready to collect material at the
initial stage. Everyone who wants to should know what exactly they can do right now.
Please, if there are discussions about the project on the Internet and electronic publications, if possible, inform me
about them. Please!
