From Evgeny Milun To All 6 March 1998

Hello All !

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Message from Alex Noman & Evgeny Milun.

Hello everyone.

As you probably already know in Samara
the creation of an S-Net electronic network on Hayes-compatible modems
connected according to Mikhail Kondratiev's scheme is in full swing.
Work on the terminal is almost completed program, the beta version of which you
may have seen. Currently, work is underway on
creating a BBS and mail programs
(the BBS program will be “made public” in
the very near future). Emphasis will be placed on supporting:

1) Several graphics modes:
standard Spectrum 128 (42/64 characters
per line), monochrome graphics mode
512*192 (85 characters). Also, probably
Scorpion + GMX, Sprinter and
some other models
of Spectrum-compatible computers will be supported, if their
developers are interested in this...
(applications are accepted:)...

2) The maximum possible speeds in
all program modes (both terminal and
chat modes, and in file/mail exchange modes). Which at a minimum is approximately 38400 baud in normal
mode, and 57600 in Turbo mode (7 MHz and
more).Achieving such data exchange speeds becomes real only when working with interruptions from the modem and, naturally, using internal data buffering of the modem, which is in principle impossible in the case of the Kharkov scheme for connecting the modem to the Spectrum, but real when using Mikhail Kondratiev's scheme. digression.
Some users when working with a modem
believe that the CPS issued by the program is
the actual speed of data exchange between
modems. But this is not entirely true... The point is that this is the speed of the logical channel. So, for example, when working with a 2400 modem, the CPS value can even reach 1500 when using the V.42bis protocol (LZSS, “asynchronous-synchronous” conversion, etc., etc.).
In other words, the CPS value depends on
the transmitted data itself, and therefore It is incorrect to use the term CPS to describe
connection speed. ]

3) The most common file
protocols (possibly even such a
"monster" as Hydra).

Some
other plans will also be implemented. In particular, it is planned, or rather, work is already underway, on the ftn-
tosser+editor mail package.

Varioussuggestions/wishes/questions
etc. send to the address:

Good luck! Evgeny.

And it won’t hurt you to write what has already been written...
interrupts are easily supported, Hydra is not a monster,
a small milestone for technical implementation...

This is exactly what we need.
In particular, almost everything you mentioned
(except for Hydra and GMX support) I have implemented a long time ago, and
already for six months as a fidoshnik on Spec, which is sometimes nice
to tease the PC-compatible ;)
But I don’t have enough time for an email editor,
although the structure of the database and much else has been thought out a long time ago (not by me alone). Therefore, draw a conclusion - is it worth racking your brains over what has already been written? (the Zmodem document in English
weighs 121K, but when I created it and checked it on BBSs, it turned out that it doesn’t fit fido
! - there’s some kind ofits
modification. I had to learn “on the go” - catch the frames of the transmitter, adapt in the process, etc.
And pah-pah, it still works!

By the way, before I start writing Hydra, maybe you have
any thread of a solution to this matter, if you don’t mind: the problem is
the following - since Hydra simultaneously works in both directions,
how can I read/write data without losing incoming data? I
have one real idea, but as they say, one head is good, but two half-liters are even better ;)

With the best, Denis.
