Известие о смерти Кастанеды появилось только 18 июня.

Carlos Castaneda died. He is believed to have been 72 years old. None
no funeral ritual was performed; his cremated remains
were taken to Mexico. The main thing in the books of Carlos Castaneda,
of course, is not anthropological material, not his
"energy model of the universe" and not its recipes for use
plant psychedelics. Many of the mystical things he described
techniques exist in other traditions. The main thing is
amazing beauty and power existential poetry, bursts
which are scattered throughout all his books - and the first four of them
can safely be called great (I would call almost everyone such). From
This is what don Juan's teachings consist of - psychedelic
stoicism or shamanic existentialism, as you like, including me
it doesn’t matter at all who is actually behind this teaching -
Mexican shaman Don Juan Matus or American anthropologist
Don Carlos Castaneda.
Few writers aroused such delight and such
irritation. This delight is understandable - many of us remember what it was like
was to read a samizdat photocopy of Castaneda in Moscow,
hung with portraits of black magicians from the Politburo, or purchase
wholesale quantities of decorative cactus Lophophora Williamsi
crazed cactus growers from the Bird Market - under suspicious andthe confused look of a patrol policeman. It is clear and
irritation - the world is full of notorious losers who
They approach his books with their own standards. They are the standard
themselves, so there will always be controversy about Castaneda. But I doubt it
that anyone would argue about these disputants.
Castaneda is the greatest poet and mystic of the 20th century. Millions of people
owe him moments of insight and happiness, and even if then
it turned out that these insights do not lead anywhere, then this is not his
wine. He himself wrote in his best book "Tales of Power"
("Tales of Power"):
"That's the problem with words. They make us feel enlightened,
but when we turn to face the world, they always fail, and
ends with us facing the world the same as before,
without any insight."
And then: what and where does a person lead in life? As I said
Castaneda, there are many roads in this world, and they all lead to
nowhere. But among these roads there are “roads with a heart,” and he,
undoubtedly walked along one of them.
He wrote that a man of knowledge has four enemies - fear,
strength, clarity and old age. The last enemy is the most cruel.
The desire to give in can “overwhelm all his clarity, all his
strength, his entire rank. But if a person overcomes hisfatigue and will live his destiny fully - then he can
call him a man of knowledge. If even for one brief moment he
fight off his last enemy! This moment of clarity
strength and knowledge are enough." I believe that in Castaneda's life such
there was a moment. He called it "having to believe".
Is Castaneda really dead? Since the sixties he has already
died several times. Resurrected several times. Several times
ascended. And anyway, is Castaneda Castaneda? I have if
honestly, there is a strong suspicion that he is again luxuriously fooling us
heads, and in a year or two will emerge from Mexico, announcing to the world that
was forced to "break the streams of aliens concentrated on him
thoughts to conduct a complete review of your personal list before
entrance into the third attention." It will be quite in his spirit. He can
not to emerge from Mexico if you really decided to go to this
the very third attention is right in the boots and hat, like don Juan. I
I think it's best to use one of his
poetic techniques and suspend judgment. But if he did die
what then?
The New Yorker magazine recently published a very funny
caricature - someone's funeral, a gloomy face in horn-rimmed glasses,
looking out from the coffin, a group of mourners and very similar todeceased
gentleman pronouncing the funeral word: "Death business person
especially sad." Of course. We have to think. But the death of a poet, a warrior
and magic is not a tragedy. It's just his latest joke. Him
there is nothing to lose - and he loses nothing. We are losing.
