My name is Piotr Marecki, I am an associate professor at the Jagiellonian University in
Krakow. Two demosceners, Yerzmyey and Hellboj, and I decided
write a book about the ZX Spectrum. We believe that it is best for
books about this platform do not repeat the official story about
hardware, its creators and proprietary programs, but mostly
focus on users. Our goal is to show how
the platform separated from the manufacturer and began to live on its own
yourself, especially within creative activities such as
demoscene. In our story we want to make the main
actors of platform users, especially active
demosceners. Of course, this will not work without your help.

There have never been such projects before, so it won’t be easy
write our history of the ZX Spectrum based on existing publications.
For our project, we must collect the data ourselves. For this we
We have compiled questions about the ZX Spectrum and your participation on stage. These
The questions are very detailed, answering them will probably take a lot of time
time, but we hope that we will convince you to spend this time for the sake of
platforms.

We want to analyze the information we receive from you and
include it in the publication as one of the most important
elements (of course, we will use in the text and
literature, and our own observations). We also ask
help us contactpeople who participate in the ZX scene in
different roles (or professions). Any advice, links, information
are important to us. Our narrative will take all this into account. Because of
that we are dealing with the creative side of the scene and want
display creative work, we will be grateful to you for
mention in your answers of specific products, events,
ways of cooperation, etc. We are also interested in your
personal approach to the stage and creativity. Your comments can be
quote, and for this, your nicknames are important to us. We also
We welcome informal language in your answers - in any form,
which you use on stage (let's show how we really
Let's talk!). It is important to note that we are preparing a book for publication
in the USA - for readers who may never have heard from
demoscene and ZX Spectrum - so some questions may
seem banal or primitive to you.

                Ownership and identification

What was your main motivation for purchasing the ZX Spectrum?

Was this due to the low price of the computer?

How did you first meet him, was that where you met him
purchased? How did the purchase take place?

Was there already a feeling of belonging to the Spectrum scene back then? B
In what form did it manifest itself (then and now)? Where are the spektrumists
met and talked? Where are they doing it now?

Was there any special slang associated with being part of the scene? Why do people get attached to the demoscene?

Can you give examples of demos or intros where
Is the authors' connection with Spectrum mentioned?

Where are you in relation to the hierarchy of demo parties associated with ZX
Spectrum? Which party means something to you?

                     Demoscene structure

What did you do on stage, what were your functions?

If you were to build a hierarchy of functions/"professions" associated with
demoscene, what would it look like?

Are there functions that appeared with the development of the demoscene and
disappeared? Why did they disappear?

If the scene is anarchy, that is, it generally has a structure and
what is she holding on to?

How is it that the scene continues to exist without collecting
donations, grants and external funding?

Can the terms of a free economy be applied to the demoscene?

                           Nickname

What is the origin of your nickname?

Why do you need a nickname?

Demosceners usually use nicknames. If you needed them
first and last names, then what percentage of demosceners could you
name them?

Is it possible to talk about the double life of a demoscener? Are you involved in
something under a nickname that you wouldn’t do under your real name?

Is friendship on stage related to friendship at work?

Why do some stagers use multiple nicknames?

                ZX Spectrum and other platforms

Is it true that there have been or are ongoing wars between platforms?

If yes, how do they happen?battles? In the demo? In the archives? At a party?
In chat (IRC)?

Can you give an interesting example of a platform battle in a demo or
intro?

What words were used for "enemies"? For example,
What were the commodores or atharists called?

Did the ZX demosceners have an aversion to other platforms?
Can you give examples?

Did the stagers promote “platform purity”? For example, to
Was the music at the party played only from the original platform? What for
you "original platform"?

Were there any cases when people left the ZX scene for another?
platform? What do they say about such people?

Is music often converted on Spectrum, can it be found on
other platforms? (Demo, intro, games, music, graphics)?

                          Team

At the beginning of the history of the demoscene, authors were usually individualists -
in the 1980s, stage writers often worked alone. Then there was a shift
to collective creativity. Do you agree with this, what is your
look?

What was the main reason for joining groups?

What ways can you name of teamwork in the demoscene?
Are there any interesting, unusual examples?

Interesting group work at parties (get-togethers), for example, in
time for real-time competitions. Can you give examples of such
cases and results?

The creative product on stage is the product of a collective, usually
signed with the group's name. Do you know any unusual examples when
did bands come together in the demoscene?

Teamworkis also reflected in grits? Why sometimes
Grits write to everyone and why do demos rarely do without them?

Evaluation of work on the ZX Spectrum

What are the main methods for evaluating creative works on the Spectrum stage?

Why do works win at parties?

How much does the atmosphere at a party affect the victory of one or another?
work? Are there Spectrum parties where some type of work
preferred?

In addition to voting at the party, do they influence the evaluation of works, groups and
sceners things like magazines and voting on Pouet?

How big are the stakes? How important is winning? What can you do?
achieve by being part of the scene?

What is important to you on stage? Opportunity to gain fame? Friendship?
An opportunity to educate your friends? Anything else?

Do stagers participate in other types of digital creativity?
(for example, game production, application development, etc.).
How much does the demoscene help in these areas?

                  Division into East and West

What are the main differences between the so-called East and
West on the ZX Spectrum platform?

Perhaps what distinguishes them is their approach to legal commercial
programming?

Is participation in the demoscene in the East associated with a large number of
free time that can be spent on programming,
creating music or graphics, going to parties?

Can we say that hardware and programs had a political
role, i.e., in the 80s they prepared the people for social
changes, associated with the fall of communist governments?
(Something like rock music and videotapes at the same time.)

Clones and computer equipment on the periphery

Why ZX Spectrum was the only platform that
cloned on such a large scale?

Was the desire to share (so important for
demoscenes), this time not on software, but on hardware
level?

The most important and most used clones: ...

What were the most original ideas for cloning (name,
form of equipment, tools, other forms of creativity?)

Where could you buy cloned ZX devices and where can you
buy now?

What's behind the DIY idea? Is it true that the demoscene too
stems from this, i.e. what can these people just do
your own computer?

Languages on the ZX Spectrum stage

It is said that digital production is mainly made on
English. Is it the same with the demoscene or are there differences?

What are the reasons to use languages other than
English?

Can you name works and authors who do not use
English, but at the same time have a mass audience in many
countries?

                 Creative programming
          (for people related to programming)

How did you learn to code creatively?

Where was the main place to learn programming? At home? B
school? At the computer club? With friends?

YouAre you continuing to develop your coding skills?

Coding in the demoscene can be compared to an act of creation. How is it
happening? Can we talk about the role of inspiration?

What about ideas for effect? Where do they come from? Is it important
visual aspect? Is it more imagination or calculation?

The effect that amazed me: ...

What programs/utilities do you use to create your
programs?

How important is it to know mathematics or
physics?

                   Ways to maintain archives

Do stage writers try to preserve their work?

What are the main methods for preserving works on stage?

Are there different ways to archive on a Spectrum stage? You can
indicate other collections of creative work for Spectrum?

How many of the oldest and classic dems have survived and how
how many are missing? How often are old programs from the 80s found?
and post them on the Internet (for example, on Pouet)?

The connection between the demo and the party is really important to the scene. They say
that there were demos shown at the party and then lost. What
Was anything interesting lost?

Are files included in the archive always final? Are there any
situations when the demo is completed at the last moment and then
published with errors? What is "post-party version" or
"final version"?

How are such important things for the demoscene as electronics preserved?
magazines, real-time chats and photos?

What demosceners get from having huge archivesdemoscene?
