Magic World 2015 - report from the comic book festival "Magic World 2015".

Magic World 2015

Festival "Magic World 2015" (descendant of that comic book competition
at the animation club "Ray of Light", which was written about in 2008
in ACNews #53, I - Alone Coder - was responsible there for several years
comics) took place in Ryazan on September 19 and 20, 2015 in
Gorky Library and Malina Cinema.

Louisa writes (with inserts from Alone Coder)

This year, 362 works were submitted, of which 107 were shown.
On Saturday it came with tickets (not participants or organizers) 32
person, and on Sunday 22 (there was a show in the morning).
Perhaps not many people came because it was amazing
good weather.

 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────
The festival budget was 220-250 thousand rubles. It's formal, but
actually about 30,000 rubles, because master classes were held
free. For example, a master class by Kirill Polikarpov (filming
cartoon in real time) was supposed to cost 25,000 rubles.

A show at Malina usually costs 8,000 rubles, but the real price
The tickets were divided in half (50/50).
They showed it there from the DCP format, they transferred it to this format in advance
all films.
 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────

                          September 19

The festival opened around 12:00.Opening up a bit
was delayed, during which time visitors were entertained
clowns-animators in minion costumes, and in the hall they sat
reenactors (studio "Faces of the Past") in knight costumes and
Tatar.

At 12:30 master classes began and at the same time (in another
indoors) screening of finalist films in the Fiction Film category
hands of children."

Listened to Nikolai Tsarev's lecture on "directing an animated film"
about 20 people. He graduated from GITIS in directing. Worked as a director in
theater Then he worked as a teacher at GITIS, then as a director
on television. Then a teacher at the Institute of Culture, and
now at RSRTU at the Faculty of Automation and Information
technologies. Was familiar with Yuri Zavadsky, Andrey Goncharov,
Mark Zakharov.

 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────
Directing weddings, funerals and other cultural events
much older than cinema and theater.
The director must decide what the viewer will come out with
display. It is assumed that the viewer comes to us with problems
real world, but it comes out “with our thoughts”, forgetting about our own
problems.
You have to spend a lot of nerves and effort (unless, of course, you are a genius - yes
and thus recognition comes only after death), so necessary
called creative pangs.
Consider I.A. Krylov’s fable “Dog Friendship”:

"By the kitchen under the window
Polkan and Barbos were lying down, warming themselves in the sun.
Even at the gate in front of the yard
It would be more decent if they guarded the house;
But they've already eaten enough
And polite dogs, at that
No one barks during the day
So they set off to reason together
About all sorts of things: about their dog service,
About bad, about good and, finally, about friendship.
- What can, says Polkan: it’s more pleasant to be
How to live heart to heart with a friend;
Provide mutual favors in everything;
Don't sleep without a friend and don't eat,
Stand up for friendly wool,
And finally, look into each other's eyes
Just to enhance the happy hour,
Isn't it possible to amuse a friend with something?
And place all your bliss in friendly happiness!
If only, for example, you and I were here
Such a friendship started:
I will boldly say,
We wouldn't have seen time fly by.
So what? this is the deal!
Barbos corresponds to him:
- It's been a long time, Polkanushka, it hurts me myself,
What, the dogs that were in the same yard as you,
We can't live a day without a fight;
And from what? Thank you gentlemen:
We are neither hungry nor cramped!
Besides, really, it’s a shame:
The Dog of Friendship has been known as an example since ancient times;

And friendship between dogs, as if betweenpeople
Almost not visible at all.
Let us set an example in it in our times,
Polkan cried out: give me your paw! - Here she is!
And new friends, well, hug,
Well, kiss;
They don’t know with joy who to equate to:
- My Orestes! - My Pilade! Away with quarrels, envy, anger!
Then the cook, unfortunately, from the kitchen threw a bone.
Here are the new friends rushing towards her:
Where did both advice and harmony go?
My Orestes quarrels with Pylades,
Only wisps fly up:
Finally, they were forced to pour water on them.

The light is full of such friendship.
You can’t say anything about your current friends without sinning
That in friendship they are all almost the same:
Look, it seems they have the same soul,
Just throw them a bone, so your dogs!"

How to film this?
The viewer is interested in observing not the routine, but the anomalies.
Even if you edit the dialogue figuratively, with switching plans and
"eight" (shooting over the shoulder), it will still be boring.
We must start with the original event. Why did the dogs start talking?

You can find everything in the text, you just need to pull the strings.

Let the dogs clean themselves up after another fight.
The line of physical action is the main thing. The text can be sent
counterpoint or no text at all.
There are many conventions in cinema.

Already from the actions in the frame you can find the desired intonation of speech.
Let’s imagine how tired dogs lie, torn to pieces. Some of
they are more beaten. She may, for example, start complaining about
life. Or maybe the other one starts with the fact that she’s somehow embarrassed,
help another.

(Showed the cartoon "Balance" by the Lauenstein brothers.)

Directing can make something out of small, trivial things
philosophical.
The viewer shouldn't get tired - you have to throw something in all the time
new.
Gotta find a balance when to let goviewer, and when it’s stronger
hold.
In the first minute of the film, you need to grab the viewer by the horns. If immediately
If you don’t do this, then it will become more difficult every minute
grab
 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────

Next was a display of Ryazan works from the festival with SMS voting for
better job. Then there was another master class.

 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────
Representatives of the Humra project (HUMRA) spoke, and specifically
studio "Telescope", which produces cartoons for HUMRA on
political topics on grants from the European Union and the Goethe Institute,
attracting children.
They had one performance on the technical side, another on
political topics.

Their technique is simple - they use paper and plasticine
translation using the DragonFrame program.
Lighting with LED lamps (for cold light) with black
a curtain around the camera to prevent glare.
Pieces of paper are attached with kneading, adhesive buttons or photofix.
If a scene is screwed up, it's easier to reshoot it entirely than
fix one frame (however, you can cut it out).

FairySound USB audio speaker is used to record sound.
(perhaps they meant Music Fairy?). The sound is written on
microphone with foam attachment (pop filter), speak slightly higher
microphone (except in cases of shouting, whispering andetc. - there on
circumstances). They always write silence before and silence after,
several takes, with rehearsals, the result is listened to
headphones. The recorded sounds are disappointing in volume (not quiet and not
overload), and then they build a hierarchy of volumes.

The European Union and the Goethe Institute also organized an international project
comic book series RESPECT - some of the works from there participated
on "The Magic World".
 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────

Unfortunately, HUMRA's performance overlapped with the show
finalist films in the category “Fiction Films by Adults”. A
the level of work there was extremely high (we managed to see
about half).

After this show there was a lecture by Alexey Iorsh about history
comic books, and then we moved to the Malina cinema, where
"The most sincere and touching works" were demonstrated.
Then we separated again - I went home, and Dima left with
organizers and participants at the after-party in the RSRTU dormitory.

 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────
At the after-party, I had an interesting conversation with Alexey Iorsh.
He is about 50 years old, he is a metalhead, he has been drawing comics since the 80s. B
he is the art director of the RESPECT project, and it’s interesting that, unlike
from the speakers from HUMRA (they talked about stereotypes that
allegedly divide people, aboutlaws that are incomprehensible to you personally - and
Why, they say, are they? - also about tolerance, etc.),
ideologically, he is still not in the European Union, but in Russia.
Main points voiced:

A.I. Previously, there was no such thing as the world of childhood. Early
entered adulthood.
(...then there was some conversation about religion...)
AC: Religion is a system-forming factor. Conscious members
societies can live and provide benefits without it, but for
for the majority of the population, it is she who gives the guidelines for good and evil,
system of values and rules of relationships in society.
One older participant objects that I am hinting at her
lack of education, etc.
AC: I mean that, unlike ardent fighters with
religion, who do not understand what they are doing, I am here considering
the state-church system as a "symphony" in the Byzantine
understanding (the king is a power of power, the church is an informational power).
This is not about faith.
A.I. remembers Islam, with which he is intimately familiar, his
multiple currents, diasporas, split of the old Islamic
society.
AC: Religion provides a large cultural layer. Based on it
mutual understanding (so we cannot “understand” aliens, we
their settings are unknown).
A.I.: Russian culture once influenced American culture:
founders of MGM and some other Hollywood studios (about this
there was a film at the festival), Russian avant-garde... Now it's happening
on the contrary. The culture that generates new ones is borrowed
meanings.
We do not have a common cultural cauldron where scriptwriters would cook,
directors, philosophers, etc., but he is needed.
Question: Artists who sell comics only earn
is this or does everyone have some other profession?
(As with writers who do not have enough income purely from books -
I met them in the summer at an open science fiction festival. There
Alexander Gromov with the film "The Calculator" was present,
director-animator Vladimir Tarasov from Soyuzmultfilm, onecontinuator of the series about the Emerald City, one unrecognized author
from the site stihi.ru, as well as Ryazan writers and translators.)
A.I.: Usually there is other artistic income. In addition,
Personally, I am a techie myself. By the way, many of our group left for
television (Gurevich), especially on the KVN line.
Question: Are there commercial comic book series in Russia?
A.I.: Yes, “BUBBLE” publishes something about Inok, etc. But there
ideology is slipping through, it cannot be exported.
AC: What is the phenomenon of Japanese culture (manga, anime), why is it
spread all over the world?
A.I.: People want to be Japanese, and not real Japanese, but
those that are drawn.
(then the people dispersed, and we continued the conversation together)
AC: Is it possible to make people in other countries want to be
Russian? How do they see Russians?
A.I.: Basically they know Dostoevsky and Chekhov.
AC: The Strugatskys wrote that we read them like Dostoevsky, but
them as ordinary technical fiction.
(Referring to the following quote from BNS 1990 ("Unknown
Strugatsky" v.10, p.595):
"True, as far as I know, only fans read us THERE, and read
not quite like the Russians. Our reader is politicized, he sees
in our books is that we laid citizenship in them
sociological. And it puts us in a row in which it is very pleasant
located: Saltykov-Shchedrin, Gogol, etc. American, to
for example, he sees our fantastic plot first of all and puts
we are in a row with Clark, Harrison, Azimov, etc. And in this row
our rating is low.")
A.I.: Modern American culture is more commercial, but
in general, this is a descendant of the former counterculture of the 60s (hippies, rock and roll...).
AC: How can we give our culture to the world? We lose face, we copy.
A.I.: The problem is that we now have no image of the future. Or
a continuation of the USSR, or a continuation of the Russian Empire, but also
and others - the past.
And before there was a “bright communist future.” Moreover
"Afternoon, XXII Century" was my favorite book, and I subscribe
under the words from “How the Steel Was Tempered” - life must be lived this way
so that there is no excruciating pain for the years spent aimlessly.
I highly appreciate Makarenko's ideas.
The problem is that the ancestors of many of the modern intelligentsia
were in camps, and now for such intellectuals all that
associated with the USSR, has a negative connotation.
AC: This is in Moscow. By the way, many people there do not respond tosuccesses
our country, but only gloating at the fact that, for example, a rocket
fell.
A.I.: It’s interesting that the American counterculture did not destroy
the country, but it destroyed ours.
AC: It wasn't just about counterculture. By the way, in the USA there was
a very strong base of Protestantism, and we only had
communist ideology, which was knocked out from under its feet by a wave
certain publications (I mean magazines and television programs,
whose editors were appointed and approved by A.N. Yakovlev).
A.I.: Yes, they have a Bible belt. We would also like it
have. But not in Moscow, it is a liberal city.
AC: If Moscow is purely liberal, then this will essentially
a springboard for escaping abroad - they pay more there, and more
opportunities to spend money with gusto.
A.I.: We need to give these people what we don’t have there (need
come up with that). Then they will remain...
 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────

                          September 20

The day began with a show of “the most positive and life-affirming”
works in the cinema "Malina".This year no work was sent
only from amateur studios and VGIK, but even with
"Soyuzmultfilm".

Then we attended a master class from Kirill Polikarpov
(once worked at Soyuzmultfilm, now he has his own
studio "VGV"), where he, together with the audience, made
short cartoon. He really inspired everyone
animation creation. Each person, be it a child or
an adult, doing his own thing to create a cartoon.

 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────
Kirill Polikarpov organized the filming of the cartoon with relaying
in about an hour, with almost all visitors drawing
festival
His equipment is as follows: there is a filming table, which
folds into a suitcase, with a camera and light attached at the top, at the bottom
a large button for capturing frames on a laptop, and the power cable
this whole household is taped to the floor with tape so as not to
pulled away while Kirill ran around the site and handed out tasks.
The pieces of paper were quite large and were not attached in any way.
The cartoon was shot in a brainstorming session and it turned out just fine
political, however, in the other direction compared to HUMRA.
 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────

Then I went to a soap bubble show, and Dima decided to go to
other master classes. There was a lot on the showchildren and bubbles, from
small to large.

After this there was a fashion show competition from Ryazan cosplayers.
Because I used to be interested in creating costumes and performing
in the skits, I couldn’t help but stay at the event. Even in me
nostalgia awoke. Now I have other worries in life,
so I can't devote time to cosplay. Still to create
A truly beautiful image takes time. And I also met
acquaintances with whom I previously took part in skits.

 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────
At this time, David Barkhudaryan spoke about screenwriting.

Domestic screenwriters often have non-core education.
On television, all humor is controlled by KVN people.
Barkhudaryan himself studied at the sports department to become a coach, then went to
Peter, I started writing there,
and some of this was appreciated online. Doesn't write on the table.

Worked with Galustyan. They make 1 movie a year and they can't
for this film to fail at the box office. And Enjoy Movie (where is it now?
Barkhudaryan works) makes 3 films a year.

About focus groups (the characters in the film fail some
focus group).
STS has a core audience of 35 years old, women (possibly divorced).
Star is a men's channel.
And Enjoy Movie has a focus group of 20 people who are far from
film industry.

What are your current projects?
For example, the film Mafia is associated with the game of the same name,
psychological thriller. Onexport to 10 countries.
It is difficult for us to return more than 2-3 million dollars at the box office.
The finished product (teaser or
unedited film, no effects).
Enjoy Movie has 15 feature film drafts.

All production of scripts for TV series is collective. For example,
“Interns” has 3 people and 2 creative producers.
They do 3 episodes a month. In general, one and a half is enough
24-minute episodes per month.
The screenwriter requires a background - training, courses. It is necessary
learn from those who work.
There is no need to learn screenwriting from Mitta.
VGIK - Arabov - the teacher has a lot of projects.
Nobody teaches "History of a Million" anymore.
You need to know whose lectures you are going to, especially for money.
Evening Urgant, Tsvetik, Landau.

There is no place on the Internet where there are ready-made scripts that can be
take for filming. There are scriptwriters.ru, where finished works are available.

Companies have websites where you can upload your finished script,
receive technical specifications (test task).
You can win free training.
You have to go to conferences, there are producers there, you can
communicate.

In the series, the outline of relationships, the archetypes are consistent, and the rest
may change with changes in producers and creative team
TV channel.
There should be 3 storylines in a 24 minute episode.
Usually there is an adult line and a youth line (see series
"Kitchen"), this is a win-win option.
There are 4 "bits" in 24 minutes.

Decides on removing characters from the seriescreative producer.
In Game of Thrones, each character is assigned a group.
writers, and they fight for their character so that he doesn't
killed.

The American system for sitcoms and comedies has 8 archetypes and
10 situations.

Archetypes (these are all just dominant character traits, but
Each character has others):
1. Logician. One who acts logically from the viewer's point of view
(Marge Simpson).
2. Loser. Broke, the audience likes them (Homer Simpson).
3. Neurotic. He has a lot of conflicting thoughts in his head. It does not
knows that it can be somehow different. He's building a system for himself
(doesn't leave home without a plan).
4. Materialist. Focuses on money, material values.
He doesn't care about other people's feelings. He gets others involved
the gullible are in trouble and leave.
5. Stupid. He’s not in the “Kitchen”. There is Kuzya at Univer.
6. Bitch. She is logical, but angry and sarcastic, humiliating,
offends. Bykov in "Interns", Dr. House.
Such a character must have a background, what he has experienced,
why did he become so callous. The same goes for the materialist.
7. Lovelace or femme fatale. On their mindone sex.
Twitchy, a little aggressive, witty, egocentric.
Wants to be the center not only of his own universe, but also of the universe
others. In "The Big Bang Theory" there is a ladies' man who doesn't have
there were women.
8. On his own mind. Lives in his own world, is not afraid of anything. Maybe
act like any of the other archetypes - depending on the situation.

Situations:
1. Big deception.
2. Big misunderstanding. Broken phone.
3. "Dead body". For example, someone got drunk, he has a performance,
and someone else acts instead.
4. Sex. When you want, but something gets in the way.
5. Sandwiched together. When two characters hate each other
forced together.
6. Rocking boat. When, for example, an ex-woman appears
hero.
...

A common problem with the script is that the 2nd act fails. The beginning should
be with the conflict, then the turning point, and the 2nd act, there you need to
intensify the conflict. There must be a false victory, then another
anything, and the climax.

At firstI need to work with the structure of the script. Need reading
in front of the audience.
The script will have to be rewritten. Some commands
writers argue with the producer - and as a result the producer changes
team.
Every producer has an editor who knows what he needs.

Foreign viewers are even dumber than ours, they want it in the teaser
know everything he pays money for.

We have to be careful on television. There are many "taboos".
You can't joke about the Russian Orthodox Church - they might cut it out during filming. Same with
jokes about Russians and non-Russians, about gays, you can’t smoke in
screen, swear.
On Russia-2 they film during the show, but usually they film here
the whole season, so it’s impossible to quickly respond to the news.
The Americans have 6 days to shoot, 4 locations, and they react
promptly.
 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────

After the fashion show I went to the screening of the film "Rooster". At the beginning I
I was late, but that didn't stop me from catching the plot. After the show
general producer of the film Kirill Alekhin (he previously
came to us at RGRTU-Film, representing GlavKino, and now
he has his own studio "Enjoy Movie" - see above about Barkhudaryan)
told how the film was created, how it was promoted to the screen.

 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────
Once upon a time to Kirill Alekhinethe screenwriter and director came and brought
the idea of the film. He liked her. We decided to finance
crowdfunding through Kickstarter or something similar.
To do this, it was necessary to shoot a teaser. There was already an actress.
We shot 7 versions of the teaser, tested it with a focus group (we recruited
e-mails).
The teaser was filmed with our own money (42 thousand rubles for relatives
and friends). We collected several prizes for sponsors.
According to the textbooks, they calculated that 600 thousand rubles would be required.
We actually spent 2 million.
People in the frame worked for free, but they had to be fed,
rent equipment, sew suits, negotiate
use of locations.
The cameraman worked for free, but he wanted a cool camera and his own
a team of 8 lighting technicians.
There were 24 script drafts, Nikolai Kulikov was involved.

Producer Dmitry SharOv and Vlad Severtsev gave big money
("Battle of Psychics").
Filmed in the fall. The actress caught a cold three times in 7 shifts.
The stuntwoman jumped into the water instead of the actress in early November.

The rooster was bought at a poultry farm for 2 thousand rubles. (he lived on the balcony
executive producer), and then for 7 thousand rubles. sold to one
investor, but he didn’t take it, so the rooster was returned to
poultry farm.
The industry of trained roosters is a complete scam for big money.
money. Roosters are not trained, you just need to know how to use them
manage.
When it was necessary to drown a rooster, they drowned a backup rooster. But he
survived.

Post-production lasted 4 months.
There were 4 versions of the film. The first one is 25 minutes, now it’s 20. There will be more
one is even shorter and without music (at one festival there was no music
was audible, and it turned out to be good).

If you need to get a grant from the state (Ministry of Culture,
Cinema Fund):
The Ministry of Culture finances documentary films, debuts,
experiments, up to 70% of the cost (documentary - and up to 100%).
But to shoot a full meter, you need to deposit one and a half
million rubles - for guarantee.

Now Alyokhin is making a film about parachutists. 2 Red Cams
insured for the apartment.

For a day of filming (30 people, 2 minutes filmed) it costs 250
thousand rubles Sometimes you have to get money somewhere at the last minute
moment.
 ────────────────────────────── ──────────────────────────────

Then both Dima and I were present at the sand show (studio
"Art-Shmart"). A fascinating sight. It seems like it is
deftly and quickly, but you need to understand what the
Professionalism requires long training and education. Nothing in
life is not given too quickly and efficiently.
After this there was a closing ceremony of the festival. Awards were presented
the winners were given a large pie, which was distributed to everyone
those who want a bang.

(Phrase from festival director Stas Kudryashov at the debriefing:
"Russians are not lazy, they just don't want to do extra work.")
